Description

Hayes comes via a down-home diner that's branching out after 50 years in North Kansas City. Since 1955 Hayes has served the usual diner food, including breakfast, mini-burgers, shakes, chili - 65 menu items in all. One might be tempted to call Hayes a greasy spoon - but the service is friendly, it's impeccably clean, the vibe is nostalgic and wholesome.

Originally opened as a 24-hour restaurant, Hayes is now open for breakfast and lunch, with 24-hour ops on Fridays and Saturdays only.

Under new ownership (Ken Pingleton of the beloved Lawrence band, Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers) of as of late 2007.

NOTE: Hayes IS open 24-hours on Friday and Saturday. The "hours" portion of our database is currently acting up with round-the-clock hours. We hope to have that fixed soon.

Thought you should know that Hayne's has been closed for over a month now so reading about it now is totally useless!

Give this place another try, all of you who have posted have not visited since the new owner took over. I liked my food, the service and am going back for the meatloaf lunch today!

Small little fake style diner. The food is lousy and the service is average. I ate there twice since it was by my house. The burgers are tiny and they are really expensive, go grab a double cheesburger for a dollar at McDonalds and you get twice the food for a third the price. I agree with Rob on this one, not a good eat.

I went to Hayes once about six months ago and didn't remember it being horrible. So I went again a few weeks ago and I don't know if it was me or what but the food was completely different. I ordered a double hamburger for three bucks and got one the size of a plain McDonalds sized burger. When I went up to the counter and said "Hey, uh, I ordered a double," he said that they "mashed the meat together." Which, I think, is a total scam. If you like bad, overpriced food then hey! Hayes is the place for you!

johngra 12 years, 11 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

The waiter was very high. He messed up the order and forgot we were his customers. Food is overpriced for the tiny portions. I feel used.

Jillster 13 years, 5 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

The atmosphere is nice...definitely gives the feel of a vintage diner. But the food is mediocre and the waitstaff seems more interested in their personal conversations than in giving good service. We were there on a slow night, and we almost felt like we were interrupting the staff's social life. And what's up with $.80 refills on sodas? (Not that we were offered any refills, but we wouldn't have gone for one, anyway, at that price.)

There is nothing there that would inspire me to go back.

Absolutely, positively, the worst place to eat in the Midwest. This place is incompetently managed, the food is "diner-esque", and their miniscule portions are horribly over priced. Never thought I would ever say this but Perkins and IHOP are heads and shoulders above this place. I would even eat at Taco Bell or McDonalds before this place.

I have never eaten at Hayes in KC but I have to believe it is much better considering how long it has been in business. Don't trust me though, ask a friend who has eaten there, I have never heard one positive comment.

Now if you are looking fro "truck stop" diner food then nothing better than "The Flying J's." There is one in the KC area and one in Emporia just off the turnpike. Absolutely great food, reasonable prices, huge portions, and a Sunday buffet that will blow your mind. Tons of big rig diesels sitting out front should give you a hint. When you are finished you can browse the kitsch ranging from dashboard Jesus's to Biggun's magazines. Their gift shop is almost worth the trip by itself.

Oh, Hayes's in Lawrence. Stay away. Even if they got their act together since the last time I was there its not worth the effort. Especially since there is a Little Cesear Pizza, Jade Garden, and even a Kwik Shop microwave burrito within walking distance.

I stopped going to Hayes not long after it opened. The food wasn't spectacular, although it was ok. The service was ok too. What turned me off was the price. If I'm going to spend that kind of money I would rather go to Perkins or IHOP, sit in a little more comfort and at least get a bottomless cup of coffee (Hayes only gives you ONE refill on coffee)and decent portion sizes for the price.

Hayes was good when it first open...but i went thursday and the service sucked...the waitress didnt ask if we wanted refills....items orders where forgoten....

Horrible service. Mediocre food. Dingy surroundings. This place is a shining example of how NOT to run a restaurant. If you want to wait over an hour for your food and than get only half your order --- (which isn't even right) than by all means swing by Hayes!!!

Sarah Mathews 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

This place is so bad, it doesn't even deserve a comment.

Seriously terrible.

believeinacure 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I have not eaten at Hayes since they first opened. At that time the service was completely terrible even though the food was good. I thought at that time it was a little expensive.

I might opt to try it again.

How this was picked "Editors Choice" I do not know, unless the editor is a part owner of Hayes. The food is tasty, but really cheap. One gripe I have about hays is they don't carry any veggies, so you can't get lettuce or tomato on your burger. The chili is all meat (really more like heavily seasoned meat than chili). The fries are good and the shakes okay. But the prices are rather outragous. One employee there told me they are "Kansas City" prices. I regularly ran up tabs over $7 for what was not a lot of food. The prices are pretty much comparable to Steak and Shake, but the food, portion sizes, and service is not. One good thing Hayes has going for it is the breakfasts. That's one place you do get you money's worth.

Furby 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I gave hayes a hard run for breakfast. Service was terribly slow, half the time something was wrong with my order. It was eggs were overcooked or the hash browns tasted like water. The cook early in the week was more interested in talking and watching the tv instead of getting your order correct. The worst thing was lip ring serving your food in the pair of jeans she had been wearing since last week. You almost had to yell to get more coffee. I have never been to a place where they ration jelly.

Your choice if you choose to go there, just look the other way when they are dipping the gravy out of a paint bucket.

iohan 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

what a good idea gone so terribly wrong. the food is atrocious and i got sick on it. the sliders are bitter tasting and tiny, and the fries i had were greasy and cold. it's overpriced for what you get, and the service is so lacadasical that it's hardly worth bothering calling it service.

after eating at several east coast diners in my life...especially in the NYC area (but including "Wost Food in KY, in Louisville, which is actually not bad...) Hayes's lawrence location is the worst comedown for a diner i've ever had the misfortune to eat at. yuck.

LawrenceLawrence 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

My wife and I ordered our food. We sat for over an hour waiting for it to be brought to us. We asked multiple times where it was. We had to request our coffee be refilled (which only happened twice in a over an hour). We watched people who entered after us eat and leave. Finally our order was brought. It was wrong. Some of the items were missing. We finally got our bill and the items that were never brought were on our bill. This place stinks worse than any restaurant I've ever been to.

Don't call in an order here, they won't have it ready. You walk in and it seems like no one is happy you are there. Maybe it was because it on a Sunday night? I also think the chili was bland....

Furby 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

If you like your watress wearing the same pair of pants, looking at someone with a lip ring serving your food, and generally poor service. This is the place for you. Of the 8 or so times I have eaten there, My eggs were medium or hard when I ordered over easy, the hash browns tasted like they were dipped in water, the coffee was good but you almost had to yell at lip ring to get her to bring you another cup.

Overall, this place needs a HUGE upgrade, it is clean and easy to get to, but sucks if you are in a hurry or want something good to eat.

Hy-vee is cheaper, cleaner, quicker and the food is prepared right.

I wasn't going to comment, but I returned to offer accounts of my two experiences as a public service. I've lived in Lawrence for over 30 years, and never had worse food, service, value, or experience at any local eatery. The first visit went so bad, that I just had to try it again, only to be disappointed a second time. Highlights include; a waitress walking over a paper and napkins that had fallen on the floor (she had nothing in her hands); a 20 minute wait for anyone to show up to greet our table; small servings priced at hotel prices; warm to cool food temps; a waiter that didn't know the menu. To top off my second visit, when the manager was approached about two hairs found in the apple pie, he simply looked surprised, apologized, and made a comment that there would be no extra charge - at least he could have taken it off the bill! Do yourself a favor, go to Perkins, or some other place. It's a shame, because the retro decor is kind of fun.

Having grown up at Nichol's in K.C., my friends and I have always dreamed of a 24 hr diner in Lawrence. Hayes seemed to be the answer to our dreams: Nichol's and White Castle rolled into one. After two visits to Hayes, I am not likely to return. Unlike at Nichols, the waitresses (I use that term losely) at Hayes, do not seem to understand that their pay is directly related to their service. At one visit to Hayes, we had to wait on our order until our waitress was done eating her breakfast two tables away. The service was absolutely awful for both visits and the food nothing special. The closest thing I have found to Nichol's is Clay's Cafe at 19th and Haskell. Classic breakfasts, great service, and great prices at a neighborhood joint.

I have gotten up in the middle of the night for hamburger and chili. Although my doctor would not approve, this is one heckuva treat for when I am pulling a late nighter or all nighter. Since I live in south Douglas County I could only wish for one thing ... that they move closer to say, Baldwin City.

mamsir 13 years, 6 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

i have to agree with murderama- hayes is less than impressive. my husband and i have given hayes a chance three times and two out of three we found ourselves disappointed. i think the main problem is the owner. our last experience (oh, and it was an experience) there involved our food taking over an hour to arrive (and the order was incorrect). our waitress was crying because the owner was repromanding her publicly for something that was not her fault. a patron then yelled at the owner for this saying more or less that he was an ass (i would have to agree). half of the staff didn't know what they were making - we witnessed this first hand because we sat at the bar. more than one table walked out before their orders arrived for obvious reasons. the entire time the owner was bitching about things not being done correctly but wouldn't even help his staff. apparently he has yet to realize that he's where it starts when it comes to a successful business. so... overall, that place sucks. it's too bad too, because it has potential to be a great greasy spoon joint.

We had breakfast and it was great! Even the boring scrambled eggs were tasty. It will become our favorite breakfast spot now!

We had breakfast and really loved it! Even the plain ole' scrambled eggs I had were tasty. I really recommend everyone try it! We will DEFINITELY go back often!

My husband and I were excited when we first walked into this place. It has a great 50's look, and we were looking forward to what we thought would be an equally great meal. The menu lacks healthy options, so I ordered one of the house specialties - chili. The service was slow, but we didn't mind that much. Then our food arrived. The "chili" is a pile of flavored (and I use the term loosely) hamburger piled into a bowl full of grease. It is not soup-like, with beans, etc., like you would expect. It is basically a pile of meat and grease. My husband's burger was edible, but not very good either. What a disappointment.

Hayes' is one of the worst places in town to have a meal. I'm usually the first one to defend a so-called "greasy spoon," but the atmosphere at Haye's is forced, the service is lousy (even by diner standards), tickets are misplaced and often lost, and when your food finally arrives, half the time it's not what you asked for in the first place.

Do yourself a favor and head out to KC-- Nichols Diner on 39th is the real deal, and it's cheaper, too

quisp 13 years, 8 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

THUMBS DOWN! You might be frustrated by the sluggish service... But when the food finally arrives, it tastes like poop, so really you're just better off waiting.

scary_manilow 13 years, 8 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I'm going to keep posting about how bad the food is here until you stop deleting it. Can't there be a differing opinions on this site? Maybe we should use this forum to open up a dialogue on the subject...

The fact of the matter is, no one I know, myself included, has had a positive dining experience at Haye's. And unless you guys are going to allow people to express their honest opinions about a restaurant on Lawrence.com, you shouldn't have a comment section at the end of the review. Plain and simple.

scary_manilow 13 years, 8 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

Why do the bad reviews keep getting removed from here? Are we only allowed to say nice things about Hayes? Okay then: I love it that the servers frequently lose your order. It's superb that the food tastes so awful, if and when it finally reaches your table. These are truly the makings of a fantastic dining experience.

Sheesh.

This is how a diner is supposed to taste. I ordered a chili dog and chili cheese fries and it is by far the best in the KC area. I wasn't expecting my dog to come on a hamburger bun, but that doesn't really matter when it tastes so good. This is how a chili dog and chili cheese fries are supposed to taste. It reminds me of the original Coney Island from back east. The burgers I saw being cooked on the grill looked rather tasty as well. I think I'll try those next time.

The management was very indecent and yelled and screamed in the waitresses faces and constantly was very rude and nasty towards customers. My friend who waited and waited for quite sometime for her breakfast was very upset with the management. However, we did not like their meals or the service.

Michael Austin 14 years, 2 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I remember awhile back that when Hayes first opened there were bad words spoken about it. I had to see for myself. A friend and I tried it last night, and I have to say that it was a great meal on a cold night.

The cheeseburger and chili were great diner food, with the chili having a little bit of an edgy BBQ flavor to it. With some onions it would be perfect. The burger was as you would expect for a diner type place, which is what some of my fondest childhood memories are about. My friend had a burrito smothered in salsa, though not a choice I would make, but it was also a tasty meal. The service was great on a busy night. The waitress made sure our glasses were always filled and kept stopping by just to make sure we were doing fine.

All in all a very pleasant experience for a very reasonable price. I wish it was a little closer to my house though, because yes, I would get up in the middle of the night just for a snack.

John Hathaway 14 years, 2 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I was not very happy with the service, the food looked like it had been overcooked and the hash browns looked liked they were scorched. The service was TERRIBLE,my friend did not get her meal like she had ordered and it made her upset and made me mad enough to think how it would be if I was treated that way. The manager was so nasty to everybody, I really did not like the place and I am not going back there ever!

Owners, PLEASE upgrade your service staff. PLEASE. Oh, keep the young man with the speech impediment. He is the only good wait person on staff. And, we love your food.

mcaffrey 14 years, 3 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

The food is exactly what you would expect, greasy, goodness. The waitstaff is hit and miss, but generally miss. I found it to be pretty cheap for the normal sized portions.

opinion 14 years, 4 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I love the food but their service is the worst I have ever experienced. Slow to the table, confuse every order, never bring a check... I would love to make this a frequent stop but the service stinks. Owners - your food is fine, work on the service!

cms 14 years, 4 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

We had our first lunch at Hayes today. Partner had full breakfast of eggs, sausage, hash browns, toast and coffee. I had a cheeseburger and curly Q fries. Partner said the breakfast was perfectly cooked and reminised about the old Bluebird Cafe. He loved the entire meal. I LOVED the cheeseburger. Just the right size, served with a hint of sauteed onions and the taste was perfect. Best burger in town in my opinion. The fries weren't great, just fries. I will try the onion rings next time. Girls were scrubbing the place top to bottom to which I thought thank God at least one restaurant in town is really clean. Loved the open kitchen. They also serve pies which we didn't see until we were ready to leave. Partner plans to eat breakfast each Saturday while sitting on one of the bar stools. I say give it a try. Food reminded me of a good old fashioned truck stop. Yum.

Xwards 14 years, 4 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I'd have to agree with the tone of the others. I wanted it to be good, but I was underwhelmed too. My thooughts.....

The service wasn't good. I'll attribute that to hiring inexperienced staff. They need a crusty old lady for a waitress to bring some life to the place.

While I was there eating my hamburger and fries, our waitress decided it was time to mop the floor. The smell of pine sol while you're eating doesn't do it for me.

My daughter had pancakes and they were good. My food was so-so. Missed the lettuce and tomato on the burger.

landham 14 years, 5 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

4 dollars for a tiny burger?? What the hell! and "chilicheeseburger" means "slightly more guey beef"

The french fries are of the frozen variety. We didn't try the curly Q's.

McDonald's will fill you up cheaper, quicker, and I couldn't tell a difference between the taste.

The service was very nice though.

Only reason to come here would be if you wanted a place to hang out late at night, and only wanted coffee...

silentfurymm 14 years, 5 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

I really really wanted this place to be good, but its just not. The food is cooked to order, but its bland and underwhelming. The Chili is particulary gross, consisting of spiced beef and grease. I wanted to like is so much I went back for breakfast hoping it was better, only to be disappointed again. The pancake was hard and tasteless and the biscuits and gravy were not good.

The service is great if you get the guy who owns the place, he gave me a free order of fries he had just made from scratch to see if I liked them, but the food was not. I wont be going again.

hackathornsx4 14 years, 5 months ago on Hayes Hamburger & Chili

This place sucks!!! The food that you get for the price is small. The regular cheeseburgers are the size of a hockey puck. They forget to make what you ordered and then by the time you get home and call them they say that it is a "Pain in their butts" (using another word) to make it. Then they dont want to refund you your money. They said that without the food (that they didnt give you) back they wont refund your money. Dont eat here unless you want to get ripped off.
