I have to admit, some of my Indian friends would not put India Palace as their favorite and prefer to take me to other places in Kansas City. However, I have never been able to really tell an extreme difference in quality of food - just in perhaps the variety of selection. I would say the style is more Northern Indian cuisine which is richer and creamier, not as spicy as southern Indian dishes. If you enjoy that style, though, this place is wonderful and reasonably priced for the amount of food. The staff have always been friendly and I have never thought the wait was any worse than the blah-zay American chains in Lawrence.

Two pieces of advice: 1. If you don't have a huge appetite - skip the buffet and order from the menu. The price is kinda steep if you're only going to eat one plate. Plus if you go with a few friends - order different dishes and eat "family" style. You'll get a wide variety and have food to take home for a second, possibly third meal. 2. For the vegetarians out there - WONDERFUL veg selection. My favs: vege samosa appetizer (potatoes & veges wrapped and fried), nan, palak paneer (literally spinach and cheese - the spinach is pureed with spices and the cheese slightly fried), a dal dish (pureed lentils with spice). The vegetable korma is really good too! (and all taste different despite some of the other reviews) OR go for the vegetarian dinner for 2 - for less than $40 - tax included - it easily feeds 4 people (or 2 people with lunch for tomorrow). Bonus - at least on weekend nights, you can have it delivered!

I have to admit, my first experience of India Palace was not very good. I am from the UK where Indian food is abundant and I have eaten at about 20 different Indian restaurants of various qualities.

I went to India Palace for the lunch buffet as my husband had long raved about it and was very disappointed. There was very little variety and the food all tasted very similar. The dishes were constantly running out so we had to make do with scrapings or nothing at all, and it was difficult to get any naan bread. I can't fault the staff though, they are always very nice and helpful.

However, I have been twice since the lunch buffet, in the evening, where I ordered specifically from the menu. And I have to say, I was much more pleased with these two times! The food had a much better flavor and was generally of a better quality than the lunch buffet. The naan was delicious! The mango lassi is so tasty! It seems like they really make more of an effort when they are preparing meals ordered from the menu.

Although I think there is room for improvement on their menu, they are still a good option for Lawrencians!

Indian Palace is not very good. And it gives me the hella runs. If you want good Indian, go to The Globe in Topeka.

Its my experience at India Palace to expect in-consistency, and for the most part bad to completely intolerable service. I love Indian food more than most types of cuisine so in desperation and lack of desire to drive to Kansas city to get it, I will apprehensively choose India palace. On most occasions, if I would have had the forethought to pack my own thermos with water, the experience would've been fine; but in others the food was acceptable, at best, and the length of wait was astronomical. Those things being said, when they were actually "on" i felt the over-all experience was what it should be, delicious food at a fair price without a 45 minute wait for food and getting refills as needed. As a previous commenter stated, "patience is key" but even on a busy night if your staff cannot handle it, it might be time to hire more people or to simply fire the loose ends and get better help, just a thought.

There is not much of anything that I don't like about India Palace. I've been going here for over 3 years with my boyfriend mostly, sometimes with friends. We all very much like the place. The service is great. So it's a bit slower than the usual sit down restaurant, but well worth it. (I think it's the culture anyway) Try these... some of my favorites: karahi paneerchicken tiki masala palace plattervegetable korma

compared to other indian restaurants in the kc - metro area, india palace is pretty awful. at least there is indian food in lawrence.

I've been to several Indian restaurants around the country and this one ranks high, especially for the price. They could, as the only one in Lawrence, get away with mediocre food, but the food is consistent and well-prepared. The wait staff and management and very friendly and knowledgeable, but there have been times I waited too long for food, both sitting in the dining area and for take-out. Try the lunch buffet for a nice sampling of their dishes!

I'm absolutely in love with India Palace. I love their nan and veggie samosas!

IP is good, but indian food fans who want something great should head to Korma Sutra in KC where there is a location on Overland Park and Westport. Worth the Trip! And free Mango Lassis

This is my favorite restaurant, wonderful food and great service!

First timer and loved it. My husband has a very tender tummy and enjoyed as well. Was worth every penny.

My favorite restaurant in Lawrence, hands down. Butter chicken! I can't bring myself to order anything else.

There is nothing negative to say about this establishment. This is what food will taste like in heaven. I've developed quite an addiction. The fact that they deliver these heavenly dishes to your doorstep is especially dangerous. Everytime I'm hungry, India Palace is always in the back of my mind.

Emily Hadley 16 years, 10 months ago on India Palace

Yep, they have definitely passed the test of time, and I have never had trouble getting dishes made vegan. The wait staff knows the menu and the dishes very well, and they are always friendly and attentive. If it's a dollar more than I usually pay for dinner out, the portions always make it worth it, because my leftovers are usually another whole meal! I wish I was there right now...

Mike Pritchard 16 years, 10 months ago on India Palace

Great place to eat. They use the best cuts of meat at India Palace. They don't use chicken toes or beef legs in their food...very lean cuts.

In addition, they are very consistent...they almost never have a bad day in the kitchen. Highly recommended. One of the best restaurants in Lawrence.

piggywings 17 years, 3 months ago on India Palace

My husband and I are addicted to the Chicken Tikka Masala they serve both on buffets (but only on M,W,Sat, Sun) and on the menu.
Even after we moved to KC after graduation, we still come back to Lawrence for the buffets! The meat is tender and the sauce... well, heaven would be a giant pool of it to swim in with straws to drink at will. We are going today actually! I wish we lived closer and could go more often. The Nan bread is fantastic and fresh, the Mango shake is to DIE for (drooling now...) and the variety of different sauces are a taste treat for the palate.
The waiters/esses are kind and ready to explain things. They remember us and welcome us with smiles, even some times when they are very busy. We have eaten at a lot of restaurants of all varieties and prices, and this is one of the top five of all time!

I have no idea about the authenticity, but I love the food here. I've always gotten pretty good, very friendly service. I would eat here a lot more often if it wasn't as expensive. I go for the lunch buffet to get a better deal.

amart84 17 years, 8 months ago on India Palace

The food is to die for! Everything on their lunch buffet is absolutely great. I am adicted to this food like a crackhead is to crack, it is that good. Indian food, and this place in particular can't be beat. Hands Down best restaurant in Lawrence. Not even comparable to Ruchi's

justtemp 17 years, 10 months ago on India Palace

Excellent food. I have tried a number of dinner menu items and I am never disappointed. The lunch buffet is good for trying different flavors and items, but the dinner menu is really much better. The lamb saag and the butter chicken are my particular favorites. Anything vindaloo is also excellent when I'm in the mood for something really spicy. If you like Indian food, don't miss this place!
(I have been told that the same family operates a wonderful restaurant in Overland Park, too, but I have never been there.)

ohmike 17 years, 11 months ago on India Palace

Best Indian food I've ever eaten. Period. And I've had quite a bit. The Buffet is good, but to really enjoy the place, you need to order different menus items. The Lamb Vindaloo is my favorite dish albeit a little too spicy for even me to eat without a beer. The mixed grille is great and anyone that eats at India Palace without getting some fresh flat bread is missing out.

I travel extensively across the U.S., and this is the best Indian restaurant that I have encountered. Great food always, and the most satisfying lunch buffet in Lawrence.

Fantastic indian food! Appropriate prices! Very good service! I'm loving it!

I have heard great things about this place so I finally went last week. I had the Lamb Tikka Masala. The wait staff was very friendly, and constantly kept my water filled as I waited. They brought two small metal dishes. One with the Masala, one with a spiced rice. I spooned generous portions of each on my plate and sampled each. The sauce on the Masala was thick with a hint of tomato. The lamb was very very tender. You could cut it easily with your fork. The sauce was slightly spicy, and the rice mixed with it kept the edge off. The portion was huge and I had to leave a little on the plate. I definately would try again. It may not have a lot of flash, but the food is very good.

I love the buffet, but probably won't be back for dinner. The food is excellent, but the last time we went there during the evening, we waited for over 15 minutes for a waiter to come by the table, and it wasn't a busy night. The waiter who should have been serving us, who knew we were there, was too busy cleaning recently vacated tables to even say "hello" and see what we wanted to drink. We left without ordering, since we felt like fifteen minutes was long enough to be completely ignored by the waitstaff. (Did I mention it wasn't a busy night?)

I'll second the comment about refills being difficult to get. Water is always offered and refilled, but if I have a soda (which I have to make a point to ask for), I am never offered a refill if my glass is empty. I have to ask for another if I want one. I always wonder why this is.

So...I'll definitely go back for the buffet, and not expect anything other than water to drink. But no more evenings out at India Palace for me and my husband! We'll go to Ruchi instead if we want Indian food for dinner.

I aggree with Blondie! The food is the best value for its price I have tasted...and I have been to many indian restaurants that take advantage of the exotic cusine and mark up the price. They spend more time giving you good food than painting a thick atmosphere on the wall. Oh yeah, and if you need a good aphrodisiac this valentines day, try the mutter paneer...never fails!

India Palace is fantastic. I have never eaten anything there that I didn't like and have always received polite service.

merrywidow033 18 years, 2 months ago on India Palace

i really used to like india palace, when it first opened. but somehow, i think it's lost it's charm. the food is pretty good, but i tend to get put in a tiny booth crammed between the doorway and a wall, or put off in another room. altho, their bindhi masala is super. (going there during lunch is impossible, unless you like getting pushed) their dinner atmosphere is much better.

Solid restaurant. Lives up to its reputation. Food, Service, price.

surfsinewav 19 years, 1 month ago on India Palace

Yup, this palace is great. I'm pretty sure they're a chain, or at least they have one in Overland Park, KS. Indian food has quite possibly the most dynamic taste. Your mouth will be jumping with joy. Try the "butter chicken" the first time in. Tandoori entrees are probably the most american friendly but if you want to go all out get a lamb dish.

Blondie 19 years, 2 months ago on India Palace

The BEST restaurant in the nation, possibly the world but I've never been outside the nation, save for a quick day trip over to Mexico, and as much as I love mexican food, it doesn't hold a freaking candle to my precious Indian food. Anyone who doesn't rate the Palace as a 10 has clearly never been there for a Saturday buffet to experience the miraculous healing powers of chicken tikka masala and vegetable korma. Seriously, these foods have restorative powers for the soul. My boyfriend is similarly addicted to the Palace cuisine so I'm hoping that on that wonderful night after we've been married, he'll carry me over the threshhold not to a bed of roses but to a vat of tasty, creamy, warm vegetable korma and drop me in! Nothing better folks. Life been getting you down? Economy troubling you? Got problems with the lady? I have the cure, kids. A little tikka and korma, throw in a handful of pakoras and a piece of naan . . . and all your woes will slip away.

And to those of you who complained about the service . . . I've NEVER had a problem with service at the Palace. The waiters are the best damn people on the face of the earth. Have some patience, diners. The Palace is a busy place most days (and nights too) but the staff are courteous and welcoming, and they go out of their way to make your dining experience enjoyable.

All this talking has me jonesing for a trip to the Palace. What do you mean, I just had chicken tikka masala for dinner last night?!!Objection, Your Honor, Irrelevant. Gotta head down to the Palace, kiddies, for some tikka. Hope to see you there!

Tauneel 19 years, 2 months ago on India Palace

I should start with my kids like India Palace. They like the tandoori meats, the naan, and they love the soup. I just kep wondering if they were using the same sauce for every dish. The okra is really good - not slimey. But could they please try a different flavor with each dish.

I took our entire family there not long ago (8 of us). Being novices to indian food the waiter was VERY helpful (and patient)answering our questions and helping with the butchering we did of the names of the various dishes. He suggested varous items (platters) that had a variety of items so that each person could taste a bit of this and a bit of that. We found the food quite good many new tastes for our children. I had a wonderful time and had difficulty getting up from this huge meal. The price was reasonable in light of the size meal we enjoyed. Even things that did not "sound" good such as fish stew were in fact delicious!

machu777 19 years, 6 months ago on India Palace

I've eaten there several times and had the buffet only. The buffet has varied items each time and although not the best, is fairly good. The vegitarians and meat eaters in my family are all happy with the food. The waiters and waitresses don't. Its kind of hard to get more than water which would bother most people.

I ate @ India Palace for the first time and it wasn't good. I continued to eat because I didn't want to waste my money. I enjoyed the atmosphere because it was quiet and cozy, but there wasn't a big selection of food. Refills were not given. It isn't worth buying the buffet for what they charged.
