If you crave for the "itis," that pleasant euphoria following way too much amazing food, this new joint is where it's at. As the names suggests, this is TEXAS-style 'cue-the flavor's in the rub and the white oak-smoking, not drowning in the sauce. It's less sweet and more savory, sometimes spicy. And more than anything it's just dang good.

DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING AT LEAST ONE RIB-we won't even attempt a description here (can one describe heaven??) And everyone should have the pinto beans-their flavor is one-of-kind (and award-winning from what we hear). The vinegar-based slaw is the way it outta be, and offerings like fried okra, green beans, baked beans, potato salad, and fries should please the whole fam.

A group of 10 KU alums are behind the project that's bringing a competing style to our BBQ mecca.

This BBQ joint is brand new in spring 2008 in the old Don's Steakhouse building.

As of the 3rd of Nov. they are now closed and not shocking since they fired the best employees they had. It was billed as a family place and it went to crap quick fast and in a hurry. I am not really sure that making a hobby into a viable place of business was a great idea if you have no clue of what you are doing and you fire all the people who did. The food was the work of those who had a passion for what they did and not just out to make a paycheck and when they left willingly and unwillingly it was left to the devices of those who were just there for the sake of money or titles. Its funny the catering van wasnt used for catering but for a personal family car. It's karma that it only took 6 months for them to end on the note that they did but many days of empty tables and high labor will do you in at the end of the day. Mr. Carnes should stick to what he knows...

It's no surprise this place closed. I gave it a chance despite being told otherwise and should have listened to my friends. I heard the negative buzz about this place but decided to give it a chance anyway. Almost makes me miss Don's Steak house.

Best BBQ in town, hands down. Even as a die hard Gates fanatic, I must say Lone Steer's brisket is superior. The fries aren't great, but the beans and potato salad are delicious.

i truly loved this place. We ate there this weekend and the food and personal service was excellent. Come hungry though because you get tons of food!! I recommend the baked beans. I don't typically like baked beans but got a sample (the size of an actual side at most places) and then bought some to bring to my neighborhood bbq. EVERYONE loved them!! There's a secret ingredient but you'll have to try them to find out what it is. I'm so excited this is in my neighborhood. A true value!

My husband and I were pretty excited to check this place out, being that it was a Texas bbq joint and that we missed that type of fare desperately after moving back to Lawrence from Texas. What a pleasant surprise- this place rocked the texas bbq house much more than we thought it even could! The environment inside was just like some texas bbq joints we remember and loved and the staff was more than friendly and accommodating. They gave us a sample of the ribs which made ordering easy because they were freaking delicious. We sampled a few sides as well and were impressed with how authentic and unique they were. The bbq beans were not out of the can tasting and they had fresh apple in them as well - something that worked quite well. My husband was stoked that they had fried okra and that it didn't suck and even our 2 yr old thought the ribs were awesome (and she's rather picky these days). In my opinion, this place is by far the best in Lawrence. Kudos to the founders of this place- you did it right - and that's coming from a Texan! We will be back again and again and I highly recommend that people check it out - totally worth it.
