About this place

Marisco's dining experience is sharp yet comfortable, like a candlelit dinner in your living room. Its name comes from the Spanish word for 'seafood' and though you'll find crab legs, tuna steaks and the like, it's seldom (if ever) prepared a la Iberia. The menu is actually heavier with non-marine dishes, such as chicken, pork and pastas. They also have an extensive tequila and wine menu.

I've never actually been to this restaurant, but my work sometimes brings in Italian food from this place. It's good if you like Italian food that is GREASY as HELL. It doesn't taste bad, but man it is some of the greasiest pasta and bread I've had in a long time. I was eating some of it left over the other night at work (Hey, it's free food). I had it sitting on TWO paper platesand there was a piece of office paper under the plates. When I picked up the plates to throw them away, the office paper UNDER the two paper plates was clear. The grease had soaked all the way through and made it clear. After that incident I think I'm hesitant to try it again...but I'm sure I will.

I can't speak for their other food, but their Italian food is VERY greasy (no racial insults intended). I think the food would actually be pretty great if it weren't so greasy. I think it's a Midwestern/Southern thing though...Fat=Taste.

Though the food is above average, what really makes dining at Marisco's enjoyable is the warm, inviting atmosphere of the restaurant. The staff is more than friendly and especially accomodating. When eating out the other night our food was taking an especially long time, but our server (and a manager) made sure that we knew they were doing all they could to get our meals to us as soon as possible. It is rare to find a restaurant that puts the customer first, yet the staff at Marisco's definitely does!

Man this place has fallen the past year or so....so has the other place the ownership runs, JB Stouts. They must of changed owners or something. This used to be one of the best places for fresh fish and soutwest food. It used to have a kitchen full of chefs, but they have left the building! Whoever runs the kitchen now got his degree from a cracker jack box. Two years ago this place was great for fresh fish, now they serve frozen fish.

ATTENTION* Please add FROZEN SEAFOOD to your sign.

I have given Mariscos about 6 chances in the last year but I will not go back, every time I went I got frozen fish! This place is crap it is a shame becasue inside it is one of the nicest places in Lawrence.

ATTENTION* Please hire a chef!!! And get back to where you once were!!!!!

I like Marisco's. However, last night (4-22-05) I was getting out of a booth to let my fiancee out and I was hit in the back of the head with a tray being carried by someone who possibly was a manager. It was only a glancing blow. I was not hurt, but a few calamari rings were spilled, along with what looked like french fries.

The gentleman across the table from me said he never expected the "manager" to come close to me and had actually veered into my space at the last second.

I have never been told to "look both ways" when exiting a booth.

Oddly, no one from Marisco's apologized or inquired about the incident.

The waitress was good, so service would rate a "7" otherwise.

The food was outstanding, service was perfessional and prompt. I definitely enjoyed the wine selection and the clean, non smoking atmosphere.

We just moved here and have been trying out different restaurants. As we walked in we were pleased by the setting. Very nice and romatic. The menu was a little bit pricey but we didn't mind paying for good food. Then the meal came and we were so dissappointed. Part of the food was cold and some of it was hot. We went ahead and picked at our food because we were starving and finally the waitress came back to check on us. We told her about our complaints and she then went to talk to the manager to see what they could do. She then cam back and insulted us with an offer of one of their fine choices of desserts. NOT!! We told her we were insulted and were not paying for our food. My point is if a restaurant wants to charge fine prices for the setting, dining experience, and the food. It better be worth it. And at Mariscos it was not, we scratched this restaurant off our list of places to go eat at Lawrence.

The food was okay, but not spectacular. My friend had the sirloin steak and it was flavorless. I had a delicious beef tenderloin topped with an exquisite red wide, walnut and blue cheese sauce - however, it came with two very pedestrian side dishes: mashed potatoes and undercooked veg medley (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower). For a dish that cost 17 bucks a plate, I expected something more than that. Our waitress was nice yet clueless about the wine list. For the prices that we were paying, I expected the wait staff to have a passing interest and knowledge about the wine they were serving. On a final note, and this is just personal to me, but I don't want to see a t.v. when I am having a nice dinner. The decor is nice and it is evident that this restaurant is trying to attract customers who want a "fine dining experience". My note to mgmt: Lose the t.v., or make sure only the bar patrons can see them.
