This spot gets better and better. Just TRY and get a table on Sunday morning. It's always packed. Perhaps the best restaurant in Lawrence for breakfast/brunch or a light lunch.

I would highly recommend this restaurant. The coffee is consistently great and the food is delicious! I have only experienced the very best service but I try not to go there when it's packed out like Saturday mornings!

"maybe enjoying conversation with friends - correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that why people go out to restaurants??"
Uh, no. I am "correcting you when you are wrong". People go out to a restaurant to eat. Milton's has a small seating area and Saturdays are their busiest days.
I think Milton's has fantastic french toast, with huge pieces. And I love those roasted potatoes on the side. I frequently eat at Milton's when I get the chance.

I second strubette's review. The food is fine, not incredible but this last weekend I waited outside, standing with my 91-year-old aunt for 30 minutes for a seating for four people. When our name was called the owner said he had to skip our party because only 3 of the 4 of us were there. I understand but do not appreciate this policy however the owner was really rude about it and should have informed me of the policy when I gave him my name. What a real jerk! We left in a huff and walked straight to Global Cafe where we were seated immediately, received great service and had better food. So keep your crappy service and average food Milton's!!!!!

Wow, based on a review from 2008, I see that some things never change! We tried to linger over coffee after paying the bill, and the owner came up and told us we had to leave. How rude!! I will not go back. I had no idea this had been going on for at least 3 years.

I love Milton's! The place is really busy on Saturdays, in particular. But, if you can get a seat, it's worth the wait. The coffee is outstanding, the wait staff is friendly and the food is always fresh and tasty. I have never, ever been told to leave in all the times I have eaten there. When I've gone in, there are usually regulars that sit at the counter area, and one lady always has her laptop and is there when I come in and usually still there when I leave. I cant imagine that anyone has ever told her to leave, otherwise, would she be there so much? I doubt it. Milton's is a small space, so, if it's crazy busy, we eat and go on our way, but, like I say, I have never seen anyone or myself being told to leave.

Reading through the comments above, it definitely seems like the owner is bringing down the restaurant with his attitude!
Personally, I have never seen anything like this while in Miltons. The staff have always been very chatty and polite and I have never received the wrong item on my order (unlike some other places in town). I don't drink coffee so I can't comment on that, but my husband says it is excellent and some of the best he has ever had.
The food at Miltons is always top notch! I love the eggs benedict, and the staff are always willing to make it the way that I want. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and I have never had to wait more than 40 minutes for a table, even at 11am on a Sunday.
However, if the previous comments are to be believed, the owner is happy to rush out customers in the name of more profit. It seems like there would be two resolutions to this:
Open another location or expand the current location to incorporate more tables.
Realize that you opened a restaurant in Lawrence, a place where people like to meet up with friends, talk, read and do whatever they want!! Seriously, if you don't want people to come into your restaurant and, god forbid, sit down, then don't open a friggin' restaurant. I understand that people say you should be courteous and get out as soon as you're finished, but those waiting are hardly being courteous by rushing you out when you are a paying customer and might just want to sit and have a cup of coffee.
Overall, I love going to Miltons and I don't mind waiting on a table. The food is worth the wait and the atmosphere is good!

I will never eat at this restaurant again. This morning my husband and I both ordered omelets. I requested that mine be made with egg whites. However, when the omelets arrived mine was made incorrectly. The server offered to make me a new one. A few minutes later, I got up to refill my coffee, as I was refilling filling it, the owner approached me. He informed me that they would make me a new omelet, but I would have to pay for both of them. The server had already taken the incorrect omelet away completely untouched. When I gave him a puzzled look, he snapped back, "What do you think is fair?" I replied it doesn't matter. I have worked in restaurants for eight years, and I have never heard of a customer being asked to pay for a mistake. I have also never felt more unwelcome in my entire life. I will not be returning this establishment, and I am going to tell everyone I know exactly how horrible they made me feel for asking them to serve me what I ordered!

Hannah, it is extremely busy there on Saturday and Sunday mornings. I'm sure the manager was just trying to make sure other people get to enjoy the good food and great coffee.
If you want a place you can hang out at all morning and read your paper, this is not the place for you. If you want the best French toast I have ever had, then certainly stop by and it is worth the half hour wait, or even an hour wait if the place is full of people like Hannah.

Miltons is the best breakfast place in Lawrence. I have been here three years and dine at Miltons once a month. It usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to be seated, but the food and coffee are well worth it. If I were the owner, I would have expanded the restaurant or opened a second location a long time ago. If it were not worth the wait, why would people stand in line for that long? The place is first class all the way.
With all respect to strubette's post, it is incredibly rude for he or she to be sitting for for 30 minutes enjoying conversation when there are people who have been waiting for a table for 30-60 minutes.

I used to meet a professor at Milton's every Friday and enjoy a nice breakfast while we discussed our work... We had to wait in line for 20-25 minutes every time, but we never complained. The service was slow, we never complained. However, today the service was just terrible. The manager/owner got really upset, "PEOPLE GO TO A RESTAURANT TO EAT, NOT TO TALK!", he yelled... even if we kept consuming throughout the time we were there. He said that "it is a business!" and there were too many people waiting... He tried to hurry us in every possible way. He was terribly rude as he told us to leave. I hadn't ever been treated with such disrespect. We left, but sat across the street to finish our conversation. The table was empty ALL that time... I strongly recommend you NOT to go to Milton's if you want to ENJOY your breakfast and have a CONVERSATION... With so many good places to go in Lawrence (Wheatfields, the Myrth, Cafe Global) it's simple not worth going to Milton's. His owner has serious issues.

3am, is this true? If so that is the best Lawrence news I've heard in quite sometime! I can finally start eating there again.
More than one friend who works at Milton's has told me that Dave "hates" me and my friends in particular for some reason. They said it was because we always come in hungover. I would say that a great portion of their weekend customers share the same affliction.
Great to hear that it's Dave-less!

I'm completely amazed at these comments. I have never had bad service at Milton's. We (including my 3-year-old daughter) go to Milton's every weekend, and over the past two years, everyone there has learned our names. That's incredible customer service. Dave especially, it's one of the reasons we return. The waiters and waitresses are great with my daughter, go out of their way to make sure she is doing well. The food is fabulous, would highly recommend the french toast, a calzone, the pizza, or any of the specials. The cinnamon rolls and scones (and muffins too) are delectable. Coffee is the best in town, gets darker as you go left to right. The dark blends are very good.My only wish is that they were open in the evening for late night coffee and dinner.

Milton's is great. The best breakfast in Lawrence. It's your classic small neighborhood joint... a place where you can still get real actual food made and served by real actual people. And yes, you might have to wait for a table (especially on a Sat. or Sun.)... And yes, the owner of the joint is notoriously cantankerous... But the coffee is good. The food is hot, tasty, and reasonably priced. That's why locals have been packing the place on an almost daily basis for a decade. We are willing to risk Dave being rude to us for some French toast and bacon. Are you?

i love milton's... one of my favorite frequents in town these five years ive been around, but i have had a few sour experiences there over the last 5-6 months. first, let me point out that this timeline of less than 6 months is now that i have a baby along with me. my initial problem was that twice in a row, i was made to wait over 45 minutes to be seated with my baby. the second time i left because they had completely skipped us over in the rotation being set up having accidentally crossed off our name and werent will to correct it for us and seat us. they just added us to the bottom of the new list. and didnt understand/care about our frustration.today though, was completely a different story. i do no remember or care about the name of the belly-toting white guy who serves there and has for a long time, but he was wearing a see-through v-neck shirt with his chest hairs sprouting out of the shirt today and he was THE PERSON bringing out the prepared food. i wanted to vomit. i thought he was just a section server so i was satisfied when we were seated and had someone else serve us, but then he brought out the food.i am not going back there but for coffee and treats from behind the counter for a LOOOOOOOOOONG time

All of the comments above although true and false, are criticisms of a restaurant I gave my heart and soul to. I do apologize to those individuals who have had a bad meal or service. Milton's is one of the few restaurants that "cook from scratch". For those who have never set foot in a professional kitchen, cooking from scratch requires detail, timing, precision and consistentcy. Patrons of Milton's should be appreciated for their loyalty but in turn should appreciate the hard work( and I do mean hard work) of the Milton's staff. I departed Milton's in June 2008 and miss the patrons and employees and wish the best for both. As for Sven(anonymous), I can only speculate that you were a former employee or a friend of the to kitchen guys that were fired. They were both let go for their actions that could have put the health of Milton's customers at risk.

I have a group of friends (5) from work that want to come to Lawrence and have heard about Milton's and want to eat lunch there. Personally, I have only eaten at the place once. We were seated at the bar, enjoyed decent food and decent service. Now after reading the comments on this board, if I bring all these people to eat at this restaurant and they have a poor experience because of the owner being rude or the wait staff exhibiting a haughty attitude....I'm going to be 'effing pissed! So hopefully this place has got its act together by the time we visit.

This restaurant offers decent food and excellent coffee, but I would not suggest ever going here because the service is over and above the worst I have ever received. The gentleman who manages the restaurant on saturdays is completely rude. If you sit at your table for more than a few minutes after you have paid (maybe enjoying conversation with friends - correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that why people go out to restaurants??) he will come over and tell you to leave. I would much prefer Firstwatch where they actually care about their customers.

As a KU undergrad and now a grad student, I have frequented Miltons a few times for breakfast or lunch. I've always been really pleased with the food, atmosphere, and the waitstaff, but unfortunately I decided today after seeing the owner be rude to yet another customer that I can't go back there.Last year I went there with my boyfriend for breakfast and the owner yelled at us from across the room (in front of all the other customers) because he thought we were cutting in line and seating ourselves at a booth, when really we had already eaten and were just going back to our table to leave a tip. Then a friend and her father went there for brunch and, having never been there before, her dad mistakenly thought that the bar seating was first come first serve and they sat down, only to have the owner come over and be really rude to them even though my friend and her dad apologized and tried to explain they hadn't known. After seeing him loudly tell off a dad for his parenting skills this morning (the kid was being too loud), I decided I'm not supporting the place anymore. It's a shame because I like the food, but I think from now on I'll go to Wheatfields or Ingredient for breakfast where they treat you better and you don't have to worry about getting yelled at or made fun of by the owner.

I am drawn to Miltons for their coffee, breakfast and pizza. I am surprised that I return because a couple of summers ago I waited 20 minutes in line on a Sunday morning for a to-go cup of coffee hoping to sit outside with it, thinking that the outside seating area was not a staffed area. After sitting outside with a book, the owner approached me and loudly stated to me (attracting other customers' attention) that I could not sit there because it was for customers who were receiving waitstaff service. I fumbled an apology and embarrassingly gathered my belongings, at which time he stated that I could go ahead and stay anyway. I wasn't interested in this offer after having been humiliated. But I returned many times - like I said, for the coffee, breakfast and pizza. Then today as I enjoyed coffee and breakfast with a friend and my 2 year-old, I needed to leave because my little one was getting loud. I asked the waiter for a to-go cup for my coffee (of which I had only had a couple of sips) and he told me that I would be charged a dollar for the cup. Unless friends are insistent on eating at Milton's, it will never again be my choice to dine here. I think this is a shame because, despite the slow service, I do find the food to be excellent and the waitstaff to be knowledgeable and generally friendly.

I've always loved Milton's .... until today. The owner of the restaurant (also the hostess) yelled at us this morning and said he wouldn't serve us because 1 person was missing from our 8-person party. We told him she was volunteering for the half marathon, was walking to the restaurant, and was only 1 block away. We had enough people already to fill both tables but instead of providing the proper customer service an owner of a restaurant should ... he became angry ... and we left. By the time we got out the door.... the person he was so upset about was there with a puzzled look on her face wondering why we weren't inside. I know Milton's is a busy place -- but I've NEVER been treated so rudely at a restaurant. I will certainly never go back. Fortunately, Wheatfields was accommodating-- and much better too. Even better the guy in front of us at Wheatfields said the owner of Miltons has always been mean. And when we were walking back home, past Milton's we heard a woman say I'm so mad at that hostess at Milton's. Hmmm....

The food is good. One of the few places one can go, however, where the owner will be rude to your small group, when you're handing him $60. This impacts his servers, as well. I do not question why his staff turnover is so incredibly high.

This Is A Very Serious Critique Of Miltons And Anyone Interested In This Restaraunt Please Read And Take Everything Said Into Consideration. Please Boycott Milton's!!!!! And If You Read This Please Spread TheWord!!! I Know For A Fact That Miltons Doesnt Truly Care For The Saftey Or Even Really The Well Being Of Their Own Employees. In The Kitchen At Miltons There Is A Flat Grill That Has A Flex Line (Gas Line Connection Hose That Is Melted Away Because Dave Wont Fix The Flat Top. The Flat Top Actually Shoots Fire Out The Back Of It and Melts The Flex Line!!!! That Is Not Only A Danger To Employees But Customers And Other Businesses Surrounding. This Flat Top Has Been Brought To The Attention Of Dave For About A Year And The Only Constructive Solution The Owner And Brilliant Kitchen Manager Could Muster Was To Put A Towel Over The Gas Line!! Believe It Or Not!!! This Shows To Me That Dave "Only" Cares About Making Money And Whoever Is A Part Of It Is Of Absolutely No Consequence To Him!!!!! On Top Of All Of This Dave Fired His Morning Kitchen Staff For These Reasons. These Are Things That Any Business Owner Needs To Be Responsible To. A Kitchen Employee Is Not Certified And Should NEVER Be Expected To Repair Or Service Kitchen Equipment, Especially Gas Lines!
Please Boycott Milton's Until There Is New Ownership Or Until Dave Takes The Appropriate Steps To Provide His Employees With A Safe Working Enviroment!!
This Problem Expressed Is Just One Of Many Problems That Milton's Has Had For A Considerable Amount Of Time That Affects The Saftey Of Their Employees As Well As Their Paying Customers And Fellow Downtown Businesses.

My son suggested we try this place for brunch Sunday for something different. Glad we did. I had never heard of the place and I have been in and out of Lawrence for years. I found online it was voted as having the best 1 or 2 brunch and coffee plus a wide variety. What the heck. We had to wait but what else is new. Kinda small but personal. My son liked the coffee and I liked the black mountain (happened to be the name of the place I landed in NC in 1973 ) coffee which was very good. My step son liked the irish cream soda drink. My wife liked the bean quesadilla, my son the rancho entree (which he liked and he is picky), my stepson the pizza . I loved the chicken calzone which was so big i took half home. I also choose the side option that comes with it a soup instead of salad . Nice little cup of a meatball mexican melange soup. The waitress was great and attentive and so were the staff. The only thing i did not like is the people hanging around in front of the coffee bar so i had to tell them to step aside so I could get more coffee (which is fantastic). I would come back again for the calzone, coffee or other stuff and i think my family too.

Dear Friends~
Our Milton's is dead. The art on the walls is gone, there is redneck rock on the sound system, raucous truck stop servers, and screwy hours that guarantee you'll make a trip down to find the doors locked and lights off.
Suggestion: stay away, Dave needs to track down the old staff and apologize for whatever he did to piss them off this time. It's not worth tanking a business over.
I used to go weekly, several times with at least 2 people in tow for a decent meal. It was the only place in town. After a staff change before the holidays, the service nosedived. I'm talking 30 minutes with no server, 3 ravioli w/1 teaspoon of filling each for $13, server who wiped the floor with a rag and then our table before seating us...well, let's just say, they're off our list, and nobody loved them more than we did.
I hope a talented restaurateur will see this opportunity and serve the city better food with less arrogance.

One jaw-dropping habit of the wait-staff at Miltons. You give them cash and the bill and they take it and say, "Would you like change?" This is what we call PAN HANDLING.
You make change, you put it on the table, the customer leaves (or doesn't) a tip.

Milton's is the best breakfast joint on earth. The French toast is to die for. They have great coffee too (all except the yucky, hazelnut- flavored David's Blend). I'd eat there for every meal if I could. The waitstaff is GREAT. Even when they're swamped, the service is good. People in Lawrence will wait an hour on a Saturday morning for a table at Milton's for a reason. Good food, good coffee, good community.

Miltons~ What can I say? Moved here two years ago, have given your place several chances to offer more than poor service and nasty attitudes from your servers. AWFUL. The pizza is tasteless and spendy. The rest of the menu is coated in grease. And the coffee...grrrr, I think that's what disappoints me most. I asked the clerk (I say clerk because I'm sure she fancies herself a barista) "what brews she recommends" from the board, I tell her what I like, etc. She literally crinked her nose, rolled her eyes back in her head like she was fourteen and sighed. "You could try some of them in the bottom of your to-go cup and then decide what you want," she says. So I ask her for a 16 oz. brew, and she corrects me "brews and blends are flavored, we do NOT carry flavored coffee." Quite a contrived attitude for a place that overcharges for less than cafeteria grade grub and takes 20 minutes to get a glass of water on the table.
Do not go to Milton's. Poorest service and biggest swelled heads in Lawrence.

Milton's has amazing coffee. That's where the praise ends.
Milton's has by far, the WORST service of any restuarant I have ever been to. It is staffed by cute little hippy dippies who find themselves too important to actually serve you. It took forever to get a table (the hostess was on break, the restuarant was empty- you do the math), forever to get water, forever to take our order, forever to get our food.... well, you get the idea. Our server had the biggest attitude on the planet!
The food was mediocore, at best. Perhaps it would have been better if our hot dishes had, oh I don't know, come out hot. It was quite flavorless and not worth coming back for. Will still get Milton's coffee in the KU union, will never, ever go back for the HORRIBLE service and nasty food that I had at Milton's.

We have been coming to Milton's since they were Java Break around the corner and we've received excellent service there just about every time. We go there just about every weekend. They recognize us and it's nice that many of the staff have been there a long time. I also go often in the weekday mornings to do work and have breakfast and this experience has also been pleasant. They always accomodate my special requests for my daughter - things that aren't on the menu like a "side of fruit" is something they always do for me when I ask. Some fave foods - scones, huevos rancheros, mushroom omelet, greek omelet(olives in it), and my husband always gets the Milton's Breakfast. My friends and family from out of town always beg us to take them here when they come to visit too.

It's always a dilemma to decide whether to eat at Miltons. The food -- particularly the oven-baked pizzas -- is top-notch. But the service is horrible, and a normal meal might take up more than an hour of your time. (Which is fine if you're into that, but I often go to Milton's for lunch breaks.) I don't know whether it's because there are too few waiters/waitresses, or whether the pizza takes a long time to cook. It's possibly the former, because it takes 'em a long time to do even simple things -- like refilling your water glass.
I'm basing this opinion on several months' worth of eating at Milton's at least once a week. Does the awesome food outweigh the horrible service? I don't know.
