Nice Cafe

Description

Closed in February, 2010. See our related story.

For the veggie-lovin' hordes in this town, Nice may be the best thing to come along since-well, let's see... since Herbivores closed way back when Sunflower burned. Far as we can remember, it's been just that long-a decade-since Lawrence has had an all-vegetarian joint. This one was worth the wait. Located in the old Lulu's basement in the back of the The Casbah Market (opened late 2007), Nice offers over a dozen delicious dishes-most of which are organic, and all of which are priced enticingly right. At $3, the rice and peas may well be the best miserly meal in town. Many fresh juices, salads, and "patties" of veggie combinations make the menu of Rastafarian-inspired cuisine surprisingly diverse.

$5 lunch (patty, chips and a Blue Sky soda) and I was SO full. I didn't miss the meat all all. I knew there wasn't but I just kept looking at it thinking "Did I read that right? There is really no meat in this?" The fajita patty was amazing and the "light my fire" sauce with it was unbelievably good.

I will be back. Again and again.

the paddies there are delicious, and the staff there is really nice, they should bring back the pot-pie paddy!

Best beans and rice I've ever tasted, and for 3 bucks! I highly recommend going the extra 2 dollars for the jerk tofu. Goes to show healthy vegetarian food can be extremely flavorful and cheap!

Sooo good for the broke vegan. The Jamaican Jerk Tofu pocket sandwich thing is insanely tasty, cheap, and filling.

I believe calling the dish "rice and peas" is regionally authentic. The following explanation was gleaned from that infallible resource, the internet:

Rice and beans is often called rice and peas in Jamaica - with "peas" being short for pigeon peas, a type of legume that looks like a cross between green peas and lima beans. If you can't find pigeon peas (look for them in the canned food aisle, from brands like Goya) you can substitute red kidney beans or any other red or pink beans.

So there you have it. bugmenot, I agree that the rice and peas was merely warm, not hot. Still, the clean and orderly aspect of the kitchen gives me confidence.

Great food. Phenomenal value. Nice people. What more could you want? I'm neither Vegan nor vegetarian, but I was very impressed with their food when I had the opportunity to sample it the other night. The cafe is certainly nothing fancy, but try it and you won't be disappointed.

It took forever to get our juices juiced. I mean, even considering that it is freshly juiced while you wait, it was a really long time. About half an hour. We were the only customers at the time. .. Also our rice and peas (which is actually rice and beans) was lukewarm, which seemed like a health concern. But nobody got sick, so it's all good.

I hope these are just glitches because they are so new. Hopefully they will be able to work out these bugs. I'd really like this place to work out.

Delicious, healthy food at a fair price. I'm not a vegetarian, but I felt there was nothing missing in my "El Rocker" combo. Service was fast and friendly. It's a carry-out joint, but the to-go packaging is ecologically responsible, right down to the biocompostable cutlery. Lawrence needs a Nice Cafe. Go. Eat. Tell your friends.

Didn't there also used to be an all vegetarian joint called the Lotus Cafe?
