I must have hit these guys on an off-day, because I had the worst service of my life. Our waitress was not just inattentive, she was downright rude, with the kind of attitude you expect to encounter at a shady gas station & not a nice restaurant! I'm not the kind of person not to leave a tip, but we went with a bald ten percent because of the crappy service. The waitress then started bitching about the tip right in front of us as we were leaving the restaurant! Guess I shouldn't have left one at all. Now, I understand that everyone has a bad day once in a while, and I'd probably give this place another shot if the food was anything worth coming back for. It really wasn't. Pretty ho-hum, which is par for the course as far as Italian dining in Lawrence goes, I guess. One good thing I can say about the place is that it has a really nice atmosphere. Assuming that the service problem we had was not typical, it's probably good for a date night if you're not expecting anything really fantastic in terms of food.
Paisano's is not good. We ate there last night...the chicken spedini diavolo is a plate full of chicken and sodium. It was so salty, it was disgusting. My better half had the combo plate...chicken parm, fettucini, and lasagna. It was definitely mediocre, at best.
Staff was very friendly, but I was very disappointed with the food! The salad and breadsticks were ok, similar to olive garden.
Paisano's has absolutely horrible service.
My husband has Celiac's disease which means he is allergic to wheat, so you can imagine I rarely get Italian food. I called a couple months ago to ask the manager if we could bring some gluten-free noodles to have cooked for my husbands meal. He said sure, and they wouldn't charge for the noodles to boot. We were excited, because his choice of restaurants is obviously limited, and I love their food.
We went in this evening and I told our waitress ahead of time that he was allergic, and of my conversation with the manager. Our waitress, who was very sweet, came down later and said she had some bad news... the manager of the evening was a stickler for the rules and wouldn't discount for the noodles we had purchased ourselves. As Gluten-free food is on the whole more expensive than regular food, I was a little miffed to be paying twice for the already-overpriced noodles. I asked to speak to the manager, a sour girl named Heather. She apparently had skipped the "service" part of her training and immediately accused me of LYING about my conversation with the manager. As if I was trying to steal. Had I not been told we would get a break on the price of the meal, I would never have brought it up. However, here I was being accused of lying. We immediately paid (for the overpriced noodles) and left.
The situation could have been diffused with a few kind words from her, instead they lost a long-time customer.
The food is decent, but nothing special. What sets this restaurant apart is the service: abysmal. The wait staff is under-trained and slow and the hostesses are somewhat hostile and will more than likely make you wait for almost an hour in the bar area (while the restaurant is virtually empty) to try and get you to buy drinks before the meal. On my last (and I mean last) visit, we waited over 45 minutes (after waiting for 30 minutes in the bar) at our table for the meal. When the meal finally did arrive it was not what we had ordered. Our first round of water took an appalling 15 minutes to arrive. All in all, not an experience I look to repeat.
Went to this place tonight with a party and it was one of the worse places I have been.
The food was luke warm and very low quality (as well as very overpriced!). I wouldnt consider eating there again, no matter what the price was.. I could fix a meal at home thats much better with just a few basic items.
My party tried a large range of items on the menu and none of them were decent. Do yourself a favor and find a different place to eat... the place gets 3/10.
The food was far to pungent for myself or my husband. I am a very good eatter and I could not stomach my meal. The salad and bread sticks saved the day. I will not be returning unless it is only for cocktails the lounge setting is very lovely.
They have a tendency to overuse the olive oil and butter in just about every dish on the menu. Everything is triple doused in Olive Oil...if they left more of the food to its own flavor they would be in better shape.
They have a nice atmosphere....good for a romantic evening if the occasion calls.
They are a little overpriced for the type of food you receive. Overall they are good for the atmosphere but a little lacking in the food quality.
Last Saturday was the third time we ate at the Paisano's in Lawrence. The first time I had eggplant parmesan. The taste was acceptable but there was only a wafer size slice of eggplant and a ton of cheese. The whole thing was mostly goo.
The second time I had spaghetti and meatballs which was good.
Saturday I had seafood ravioli. It was filled with a seafood paste of some sort with tough, chewy, small cocktail shrimp. The $14.95
price was outrageous for what I got. This is the most surprising part. On a hunch, I asked the waitress if the ravioli was frozen. She acknowledge it was but it was imported from Italy. Fourteen bucks for a frozen dinner!!! My wife ordered margarita pizza. Despite the menu's description of the pizza as crispy Neapolitan style, the crust was soggy and the overall taste was bland. The crust was similarly frozen (also confirmed by the waitress). But, according the waitress "they (cooks) put the ingredients on". $13.95 for a pizza which was not as good as Jeno's. You're better off getting your Italian dinner from the frozen food case at a grocery store. Brad B. Lawrence
I was seated in the basement of this restaurant which smelled damp and moldy. Yuk! The ravioli didn't taste any better than the frozen stuff I get at the store. We desparately need a real Italian/Tuscan grille in Lawrence!
As an ex-employee of paisano's I feel that I must tell Lawrence the truth. If you are brave enough to eat at paisano's then let me tell you a little secret, the dish was probably microwaved at one point. Top that off with a ristorante manager that has been drinking. This coupled with one of the lowest paid workforces in all of Lawrence (even McDonalds and Burger King pay more) makes for just the kind of five-star service that this review implies. But on a positive note, if you happen to get to tipsy and over-tip, the owner will gladly get your money back from the staff. Even if this means that some quit there jobs over it. Because he cares more about your money then his own staff. I know you probably think I'm just a bitter ex-employee, but truth be told, the day I walked out was definitely one of my better memories. So bon-appetite if you wish to support one of Lawrence's worst business owners.
I went to Paisanos for my birthday and though our food took awhile and a plate slipped out of the waitresses hand smashing to the floor, I had an excellent time. They sat my boyfriend and I in the basement area where we were all by ourselves (which I thought was sweet). The waitress never left our bread basket, salad bowl, or drinks empty so the delayed entree went close to unnoticed. And she was very apologetic about the plate.
The food was wonderful- especially the canneloni. We took the leftovers home and reheated them after they spent two nites in the fridge and they were still quite satisfactory.
I think some of you might be a bit more leniant on the whole "poor service" reply if you worked in a busy restaurant. Also, the price isn't just for the food. If the same food was served in a place lacking the atmosphere that Paisano's had, I might complain. But I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the price wasn't a problem.
They do so have delivery, I order from them ALL the time.
I'm at a very fixed income and really appreciate their having no delivery charge.
Delivery prices are excellant (maybe the folks who think it's overpriced should order in); most sandwiches are good but with small flaws (like cheesesteak being too greasy at times, the sausage being so liquidy my roll fell apart or my chicken cutlet I kept having to chase to get back off the paper and back into the roll). Service is out of sight, a few times we had a small breakdown with the order and they always went way out of the way to make things right.
Their toasted Pita sandwiches rock.
i like this restaurant but its way overpriced. the food is good--i highly recommend the lasagna but it will run you i think 12.95
Paisano's does not suck - but it certainly isn't authentic Italian food. It's basically the same Italian food I could make at home for probably less than half the price. The atmosphere and decor are great, but the staff can be hit or miss. We've had excellent, fun, and friendly staff and we've had staff that came to our table twice in an hour and never removed our salad plates or the salad bowl. Paisano's is a fine place to eat if you know what you getting, overpriced Italian food that if you were skilled you could make at home.
This place sucks horribly. I do like the setting and service but the pasta was over cooked and the crappy "pasta encrusted salmon" was the most disgusting attempt at food I've eaten in an Italian restaurant. I also dropped one bill on dinner and wine which left my girl and I feel like we had just been pick pocketed. I'll drive four hours and go to the Hill in St. Louis before I eat here again!
Both times I've been to this restaurant the food and service have been great. The last time I went, the party I was with included a very tired 2-year-old boy who got got cranky just after we ordered. The server boxed up the food at our request (in very nice aluminum containers), gave us a ton of extra breadsticks, wished us well, and even gave us dinner mints to take home. Thirty minutes later when we were actually able to eat, the food was still warm and very good.
The food is good if you like italian-american. It isn't cheap, but it includes free (and very good) breadsticks and some dishes include salad. You get what you pay for in terms of food, ambiance, and service.
i can make better at home.
this place needs to use some garlic every once in a while. or some salt. or maybe some cheese. PLEASE. it's not a lot to ask. wine selection was also limited, and a disappointment. ambience-wise, Paisano's has the makings of a great, down-to-earth, family-friendly italian place...if only the food weren't so bland. i feel wrong saying this, but i'd almost rather go to the Olive Garden.
Paisano's is holdin it down.
Olive Garden > Paisano's> Bambinos
Horrible Service. The server left an empty bread basket on my table after refilling the bread, checked on us once in the hour and a half that we were there. The food took over 45 minutes to get. We were very hungry. Although I love the atmosphere. The decor is pefect. Just the right amount of light, color, darkness, photos, etc... However, the food was average to below average. I could have made the same meal at my home for 1/10 the price of one meal. My family's meal totaled $30 for 2 plates. I thought it would be a generous portion so I asked for an extra plate for my children. IT wasn't even enough to feed my husband and I. We were still hungry. Don't let the large bowl size fool you, it's very shallow. I certainly would not eat here againn unless the prices dropped, I had a coupon, or the food was more original.
when will this town get a good italian restaurant. paisano's and teller's seem to have mistaken "good" for "expensive". italian food is generally simple and inexpensive to make, and i'm not eating it in lawrence again until there's a restuarant whose prices (and food) reflect that. great service, though, and a nice drink menu.
The pasta was over cooked, the chicken was well done, but the wine was good. If you're looking for good Italian food, try Teller's. If you're looking for food that is average AND over priced then go to Paisano's. The only other thing I would add is that there were too many crying babies when I was there. Nothing quite like trying to enjoy a meal with 4 screeming children nearby. And Paisano's can't control that....
I was very disappointed with my last trip to Paisano's. I thought the food was way below average. The service wasn't up to par which of course = low value. I have had wonderful food & service there before so I hope this is just a faze. I will try it again in while and let you now how it is.
What can you say about a restaraunt that has it all. Great food, great service, and best of all--- atmosphere. It's so nice to go to an Italian restaraunt that feels like the maffia might be in the booth next to you. The Olive Garden is ok if your into loud, crowded and sterile enivronments. I would call it the Mcdonalds of Italy. If you want a great place for food, Paisano's is your place. Just make sure your in good with the mafia :)
RESTAURANT IS GOOD . FOOD IS AVERAGE OR BELOW . ITS PRICY FOR WHAT YOU GET . I HAVE BEEN THERE A FEW TIMES AND BEING THE ONLY ITALIAN PLACE IN LAWRENCE HOPE THE FOOD HAS IMPROVED BUT AM SADLY DISSAPOINTED EVERYTIME....NOT WORTH YOUR TIME OR MONEY. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE
A truly delightful lunch was had by all in my party!
Thats really all I can say...It's just another american italian joint, I find the food kind of bland and the pasta way oercooked.
The kitchen is always open during business hours.
