just a tip.... the first time i ate there, i also thought the meat was very salty... then the next time and each time there after, i just asked for half the seasoning on my philly steak! problem solved! and seriously... i honestly can't fathom why some of you say the food had no flavor!

"boxturtle (anonymous) says...

There's a reason this place has so many condiments. The food is barely edible without a ton of stuff splashed over it for some flavor"

really?

i looooooooooooooove that place! i live in lincoln ne now, and i know a few people who drive to omaha just to eat at pepperjax, then turn around and drive home! but i guess to each his own, right? no place is going to make everyone happy, but pepperjax has the best phillys i've ever had, hands down.

has anyone ever been to philly and had a philly? i'm interested to know how they compare...

As a visitor to Lawrence today, I didnt find this place's food more than sloppy fast food. The service was sloppy with 5 people on gril and no one taking orders. This is sloppy service.

The french fries are really good, and they have always dropped them fresh for me, so they're actually piping hot and (more importantly) more S&P sticks to them. Overall, though, the food is definitely not "phenomenal", as their website would lead you to believe. For a place with a huge condiment bar that makes wraps and salads, they have little to offer vegetarians. One girl told me they used beef broth in a sauce that a manager had told me was vegan. Even some visiting head honcho-type manager acted dumbfounded when I asked him about ingredients, saying that "just to be safe," I shouldn't use any of the sauces. He couldn't even tell me what the tortillas were made of.

There's nothing like ketchup on a salad that comes with a pound and a half of white rice.

Okay, so I am not one to put people down... But COME ON.... I will admit that the first 3 times I ate a Pepperjax that I was amazed! But then it happened, that 1 experience that just makes you want to run screaming. One wildly hot day I wondered into Pepperjax to get one of their amazing steak salads. While waiting in line the cooks were preparing my steak, I happened to look down the line to the guy who was getting ready to put my lettuce and other toppings on my salad. Right before he reached his hand in the salad bin he proceeded to reach down and not only adjust himself, but it appeared that he was scratching a little more frantically that a typical person would do, at least while in public. When I asked for him to not only change his gloves but also get fresh lettuce he looked at me and laughed. When I asked for his supervisor he said he was the supervisor. I will NEVER eat at Pepperjax again!!!

Everything here is DELISH! You can customize everything to your likings..even the fries are great..

and...they serve BEER NOW! What could be better than a philly and a beer?

The sandwiches taste awful. The beef is SO salty that it is ruined. Since this is about all they offer, what more can be said? The staff was friendly, the atmosphere nothing special, but the food was terrible. My sandwiches were soggy, salty, and not enjoyable. The food also did not seem fresh. Not recommended unless you are on a junk food binge.

My husband has been working in Lawrence for the past few months. When I was visiting him last weekend we tried PepperJax out. I'm glad we did. Wonderful food.

We had the beef sandwiches and an order of fries. The sandwiches are so large there really was no need for the fries. I am begging him to bring me back a beef rice bowl (since I can at least reheat that) to satisfy my cravings until I go back for a weekend.

I had a great experience at Pepperjax! I'm just sad that I hadn't tried it before today. They gave me a huge portion and it's delicious, too.

Only had one sandwich - takeout - and it was superb!!!!!

Here is a little funny story which illustrates how great these sandwiches are.... My son and I were visiting my 2 daughters and their new husbands this summer. While waiting for daughter #1 and hubby, my son and son-in-law #2 went to pick up sandwiches for themselves, as everyone else had eaten. Well, they arrived with a 3rd sandwich - the result of a coupon, I believe.. The sandwiches smelled so DELICIOUS, that newly arrived son-in-law #1 kept commenting on the delightful aroma wafting from the kitchen where son and SIL #2 were eating. Those scoundrels simply would NOT offer the extra sandwich to him! No amount of gesturing or grimaces could persuade them to give up the Philly!

I felt genuine embarrassment at the lack of civility shown by the two vultures. The identity of the culprit who refused to share the 3rd sandwich is still a matter of family debate, but I think the guilty party did feel a bit of remorse as he ate that sandwich (you know who you are!).

I really like the food at Pepperjax...I just wish they'd find a way to keep the grill looking a little cleaner when they're busy. Sometimes it looks like they're cooking your food along with the remains of the orders of the last 10 people through the line. If "presentation cooking" is what they're doing (and according to their advertisements, they are), the presentation could stand to be a little more appetizing!

Still, that doesn't stop us from going there often to get a sandwich or a rice bowl. Everything is always fresh, hot, and really good. My fav is a beef rice bowl (hold the beans), with a liberal sprinking of green chile sauce.
