Description

Ruchi - veterans of the KC Indian restaurant game - moved to town this year into a space that has doomed more restaurants than perhaps any other in Lawrence. But with stellar traditional dishes, a transformed cozy space, and impeccable service, Ruchi surely has what it takes to break the curse. Dozens of chicken, lamb, seafood and veggie dishes are offered at reasonable prices a la carte or 'Thali' style, which includes a serving-size destined for take-home along with exotic chutneys and desert. A large, varied selection of wines is available as well as Kingfisher, Taj Majal and a bevy of American beers.

Worst Indian food I've ever had. I ordered carryout and had to argue with the host for 5 mins when I went to pick it up b/c he didn't think I would like what I ordered. When I got home, I found that he had apparently decided he was right that I wouldn't like the spice, b/c all of the spice had been left out. I ordered chicken briani, not plain, bland rice. Try the Globe in Topeka for good Indian food.

Not the best Indian food I have ever had...but it isn't the worst. Good news is that you won't be broke after eating at Ruchi's.

Ruchi offers a variety of vegitarian and non-vegetarian dishes on lunch and dinner buffet everyday. Unlike India palace mango lassi is included with the buffet. At $7 lunch and $8 dinner it is hard to beat Ruchi for value, and the service is also excellent.

Hi,

Today, i.e. April 16th, 2006 myself and my wife visited Ruchi restaurant at Lawrence,KS for lunch, reading all the goodie goodie reviews at lawrence.com website.

We expected that the lunch buffet is nice and comparable to Ruchi, Overland Park but it turned out to be our worst dreams come true....the food was lousy...not being mild but tasteless and it is worth to be on a $1 menu.

We are regular visitors at Ruchi, Overland Park and love the food served there. We thought the quality of food would be just like here but it was just the opposite.

I bet if u can eat more than two spoons. We returned back home with the same hunger with which we have been to the restaurant.

Hope Ruchi won't get their name spoiled by bad management at lawrence,KS.

Thanks Andy

The food at Ruchi was fantastic!

Many friends, acquaintances, etc. of my family hale from different parts of India, so we've had REAL Indian food .. something to base the quality of local restaurants on and, not only that, but many of them have actually recommended Ruchi.

My husband and I have eaten at India Palace and the food was so horrible that neither of us were able to make a dent in it - total cr*p! We ended up having to order a pizza just to eat. Complete waste of money! The Palace uses faaar too much ginger (the stench nearly gagged me) and not enough real Indian spice. Completely unpalatable. I would not recommend it. Infact, I was so turned off by "restaurant" Indian food after our experience there that I was scared to even give Ruchi a try .. .. .. I'm glad, now, that we were talked into it.

I absolutely would recommend Ruchi .. whether your new to Indian or have had Indian and are looking for a decent regional restaurant to try .. avoid India Palace and point the nose of your car square in the direction of Ruchi. 98% of you, I guarantee, will love it! :)

Well.... The food was different than india palace except for a few things, and it was good but anyone who would choose this place over India Palace has some poor taste for what great Indian food tastes like

I tried this place today for lunch since I got a coupon for the buffet in the mail. Service was great. They left me my own pitcher of water, picked up my used plates very promptly, and asked me at least twice if everything was okay. It was my first time having Indian food and I really liked it. Their chicken was good, the curries were good, the rice was fresh, the nan was soft and warm.

I loved their buffet in Overland Park and the Lawrence version is almost as good. They maintain a nice variety (which changes, which is refreshing for a buffet) and aren't afraid of scaring people away with spices.

I felt betrayed by the people of Lawrence who left misleading and utterly moronic comments on the food and service of this buffet?!? Did you people even eat at the same restaurant that I ate ate at? 40 vegetarian dishes, maybe if you include the side dishes. Which had no flavor what-so-ever. When I lifted up the lid to the mutton goat meat dish, there was what seemed to look like blood just in the broth. It may have been something else entirely but just the look of it was repulsive. Yes the Mango Lassi was good I'll give you that. I wouldn't be suprised if the owners of the place signed onto Lawrence.com under various names and posted good comments to get customer attention. That is how bad the food was! Just stick to what you know in that India Palace is by far the best Indian Restaurant in Lawrence!!!

Ruchi is positively wonderful!!!! As someone not very familiar with Indian food I was thankful that the staff was so helpful with suggestions. I have been back six times since my first visit, each time trying something new. The "thali" version of each entree is amazing! The owner told me they even make their own yogurt for the yogurt sauce.
This is a fantastic restaurant!

I have dined at Ruchi twice now, once for the lunch buffet, which was fabulous and once to order off the dinner menu, which did not meet my expectations. The luch buffet was tasty. There were many dishes, some very tasty ones, like cauliflower in spinach puree, as well as chai tea, nan and all the tasty chutneys and pickles. At dinner there was plenty of food but it was disturbingly bland and lacked both heat and spice, two things which i associate closely with Indian food. We ordered one lamb dish and one fish dish and there was not a single vegetable to be found in either and I don't count onion or tomato as a vegetable. The poori, which is supposed to be puffy fried bread was greasy, soggy and flat. My second experience did dissapoint me, however I have vowed to give them another chance and dine there at least one more time before making a final judgment. One bonus is they do give KU students with id five dollars off dinner.

I love this place. And what I like even better (and pardon the crudeness) is that it doesn't give me gastrointestinal troubles like some other indian restaurants in town that shall remain nameless. The food is not as heavy as the "other place," and still gives you that yummy "i ate indian food and it was goooood" feeling.

Yum O.

Ruchi Indian Cuisine's food is fantastic. I've never had Indian food this good before. Please try their food!! We want to keep them in business because it is so good.

CMJ 14 years, 8 months ago on Ruchi Indian Cuisine

Please note that Ruchi does not deliver, in spite of what it says at the top of the page.

My rating is based on the on in Overland Park, but I'm willing to bet the quality stands. This is excellent Indian food.

There used to be only two places in the world to get a good curry: India and the Curry Mile on Wilmslow road in Manchester, UK. The lamb curry that I had last night would easily rival the curries at the world famous Sher Khan (on the curry mile and repeatedly mentioned on the commercial free BBC Radio One). The lamb was tender, lean, and the sauce was very light--not heavy and oily like most. The lamb in my Kheema naan not only looked like lamb but tasted like it as well. They need to do some more advertising to get the word out and put up some good decorative touches inside, but that doesn't take anything away from the taste of the food. Easily the best indian around.

Thank goodness a really great Indian restaurant is now in the space where the regrettable Jade Indian Buffet used to be. Ruchi Indian Cuisine offers truly excellent food, top-notch service, and an overall satisfying dining experience. I am so glad we decided to give it a try! We will definitely be going back..and telling friends!

This is the most authentic Indian resturant in the Lawrence/Kansas City region. The buffet is good both in quality and value (though being a poor graduate student, I wished it were a dollar or two less). The Mango Lassi and Chicken 65 deserve special mention (the Lassi is unlimited if you order the buffet lunch !). I wish they had more varieties from the South Indian menu, but I am not complaining. And Oh, there are close to 40 vegetarian dishes (and not 8 as mentioned in the description).

This is the best Indian restaurant that I have been to. The lunch buffet is great value for money. Mango lassi is included in the buffet. Great place for vegetarians. My tastebuds are getting tantalized just writing this comment.
