Description

The Meat Market distinguishes itself with its remarkable quality for shockingly cheap prices. Example :: a burger with the works, fries and a soda will set you back a whole $5.50. And all this *value* in the still-striking environment left behind by the former tenant, the Bleu Jacket.

Believe it or not, the Meat Market's name refers to its menu -- this joint is for carnivores (though a modicum of meat-less edibles are to be found). The Market's got ribs, wings, sandwiches, beef things, bacon options ... Pretty much any (once living, breathing) animal you can think of. Did we mention bacon?

As an added bonus, this is probably the only place in town to pick up a fried Twinkie (it tastes like a funnel cake on 'roids). In fact, word is your waitress will facilitate the blazing up of your Hostess cake of choice (read: Ho-Ho), were you to go so far as to bring one with you.

Ah, and lest we not mention...like Quinton's and Jefferson's before it, the Meat Market will no doubt become known for its, um, how do you say -- fine help? Fine as in noticeably attractive; and fine as in you don't necessarily go for the over-the-top service, though don't be surprised if your waitress is a total pro.

My wife and I have been going to the Meat Market since it opened and the reason we keep returning is because of the three restaurant necessities. Food, Service, and Environment. The food is consistently good and reasonably priced. The service, typically provided by easy on the eye's KU co-eds, is friendly and efficient. And what is most endearing about the Meat Market is its environment. The space was transformed from an elegant bistro to an approachable neighborhood establishment. Its televisions are viewable from everywhere, the background music is an excellent mix for all ages, but neither of these potential distractions take away from the ease of having conversation with friends.

The Meat Market is a restaurant with a sense of humor. Read the menu, Twice!!! If you don't get it, I'm sure one of the servers or the incredibly approachable owners will explain it to you.

Isn't it annoying when you walk into a place you have never eaten and you don't know what to do? Seat yourself?? Wait to be seated?? Stand there with your thumb up your butt waiting for the hostess to finish her conversation with the bartender? This could be one the coolest places in Lawrence, but it's not.

Every week they have a notice in the classifides for every position other than management....A sure mark that its the managment, not the waitstaff or the cooks thats to blame...But I am bigoted on this.

I've eaten at the Meat Market three times now and I haven't waited for seating, my order to be taken, or my water/soda to be refilled. But the wait between ordering the meal and the food's arrival was almost criminal. An average of 25 minutes between order and service is ricockulous. And it didn't matter how many people were there (I've been when it's nearly full and nearly empty).

Still, so long as you're not starving this is the best place in town for a burger and coincidentally they also serve the cheapest burgers. You just might want to order an appetizer to survive the wait.

The wings are truly amazing and BIG. Gooburger? Aw yeah. Plus the menu drivel and can of beans are hilarious to read. The service blows. Even when it's not crowded, it takes a good 20-30 minutes to get your food. That's unacceptable. The food and atmosphere make up for it.

First of all am i the only one that knows restaurant business. i guess i expected more out of the looks of the place. The pop was watered down the fries were cold and also a burger being well done does not mean Burnt!!!!!!

I am not a big meat eater.. but I think I may have been converted! I loved the Goo Burger.. messy, sloppy and delicous. And the flavor of the huge, juicy beef patty was devine! My family enjoyed everything about the restaraunt. And we loved the prices, family of four and a picture of beer.. $28.00. I was amazed at the size of the Goo Burger after seeing the price on the menu. This is our new stop in Lawrence.

Service was terrible! Good atmosphere-Ribs and Nachos were worse then what I make at home. Too bad, because this place could be great.....

First things first -- if this place were one block over on Mass instead of New Hampshire, it would be damn hard to get a seat in this place.

Though the Meat Market has lots of the standard bar faire (burgers, wings, pizza, ribs, nachos), my suggestion is to go with the burgers. The Meat Market has probably the best burgers in downtown Lawrence. They're tasty and big. And grilled. And cheap.

Some of the things on the appetizer menu actually make good meals. The nachos are pretty good, though they could stand to put more cheese on them. The riblets are pretty good, also. (Little known fact is that the guys who started this place are the same guys who started the KC Masterpiece Grill.) Which reminds me, the baked beans are great at this place. Though you'll be tempted to have them bring you fries with the burgers, try the beans instead.

Still, go to this place to get a burger.

It's also fun to eat at a place that has a sense of humor. The menu is funny. The memorabilia on the walls is funny.

And as noted above, it seems like about half of the girls in the Women of KU calendar are waitresses there, and they're actually pretty dang good at their job, or at least every bit as good as the best waitresses at the other places on Mass.

Just remember, get the burgers.
