Hop wings

Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007

From what I've heard, the hip hop scene in Lawrence has slowed some in the last couple years.

Living in KC, I'm not sure if this is true. But I do know a vibe like I remember from Lawrence is alive at The Peanut, every Sunday at Hip Hop and Hot Wings.

Those who remember Project Groove from a few years ago, will recall the spirit and energy of
the night—up and coming local artists, touring groups, and the community all together in a weekly hangout.

The Peanut's atmostphere is friendly and full of characters—imagine a hip hop version of Cheers. However this environment is not just for those in the know. All those people interested in experiencing the atmosphere and energy—and the hot wings—are made to feel welcome. Next time you're in KC, hop off 35-N at Broadway and make a left—the smell of
wing sauce will guide you. In the meantime, enjoy this aural sample...

What to wear

Saturday, Jan. 13, 2007

The Midwest isn’t known for high fashion—maybe for being home to down-to-earth folk who enjoy sunsets and open plains, but not for fashion. Street wear is a segment of the fashion world that has largely been ignored until recently, gaining mainstream attention for brands at the forefront, like ALife, aNYthing, and Leroy Jenkins—brands that now have an outlet in the area at KC’s new store Phenom. Miles Bonny sits down with the proprietors of Phenom and local street wear designer Sike to learn more about the culture behind the clothes.

Extreme Christian Clothing

The co-owners of one of the most talked about stores downtown — Extreme Christian Clothing — talk about the foundation and motivation for their business. The one employee at White Chocolate's 1005 Mass. location, biz partner Rod Smith, breaks down what the store's about — it's not just for skaters, it's youth culture, it's like candy you don't eat, it's the White Chocolate Experience.
