The Music of Festivus' Past

Saturday, December 15, 2007

Okay, so I'll admit it, sometimes I'm a sucker for the Holiday season. Not for the presents. Though I do enjoy finding something special for someone, I'd rather not have the pressure of a specific date.

But last night if finally hit me, that 'Tis The Season feeling. Could be the snow, or the fact that Finals are over, or that I haven't been working retail (yet), but there you go. I rummaged around in my car after spending about an hour and a half in a used bookstore (sooo nice) and found my Christmas CD from 2004 to make me feel all warm and fuzzy. It's too bad it's going to be sunny tomorrow...and I'll be working, not doing this:

Still, right now I am full of teh cheese, 3 year old Christmas cheese. Most of these were culled from KROQ Christmas albums and this Nettwerk album.

Barenaked Ladies (feat. Sarah McLachlan) - "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"

Jimmy Eat World (or Wham!, if you prefer) - "Last Christmas"

Placebo - "Someday at Christmas" <----super cheese

Sarah McLachlan - "Song For A Winter's Night"

Save Ferris (or, The Waitresses. I just prefer the Jewish version) - "Christmas Wrapping"

Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Carolina Christmas"

Switchfoot – "Old Borego"

The Pogues (feat, Kirsy MacColl) - "Fairytale of New York"

The Dan Band - "Rock You Hard This Christmas"

Tori Amos - "Christmas in Space"

The Walkmen - "Xmas" <----love.

Travis - "River"

U2 - "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)"

Tom Waits - "Postcard From A Hooker in Minneapolis"

Jack Johnson - "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" (shutup.)

Stuart McLean - "Polly Anderson's Christmas Party" (Canada's answer to Garrison Keillor, only...not nails-on-chalkboard annoying)

True, a few of those I skip over now, but for the most part it's a good mix, even if it doesn't make me appear "cutting edge". Maybe now I'd throw in some Peggy Lee, some Tom Jones, maybe some Richard Cheese. So if you're in need of some tunes, Here's a good list. The Nettwerk "Maybe This Christmas" are pretty good. Pandora also has some good holiday stations. Here's my work-in-progress: Click for Teh Awesome.

And since Joel is departing, I'll pose a question....what's your favorite Holiday tew-ne?

Does this mean you're going to be the nice one?

O Holy Night.

Don't tell anybody.

I mean it.

Hmmm. There are three I return to each season. Yes, it's a strange trio of songs both by artist and content:

"Merry Christmas Baby" by Otis Redding
"A Christmas Carol" by Tom Lehrer
"El Tamorilero" by Tito Puente

Oops, I meant 'O Holy Night" as performed by Luciano Pavoratti

Now I'm REALLY denying it.

"Father Christmas" by the Kinks
"Merry Christmas, Everybody" by Slade

And "Fairytale of New York" usually ends up with me singing along and tearing up a little.

DOTDOT- I'm with you. The only one better than Pavarotti was Cartman. ;) But I do love that song.

I heard Barenaked Ladies' cover of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" the other day. As an unashamed teen of the 80's, I was quite pleased with the song- I may have to get their Christmas album.

In my house it isn't Christmas until "Blue Christmas" by Elvis. Don't judge.

Aww, Jill, you can't have worked at Borders and not brought up that non-stop Borders yuletide favorite 'Christmastime' from the Charlie Brown Christmas C.D.

I still wake up in cold sweats around this time of year with that song in my head....

Little Drummer Boy - David Bowie/Bing Crosby

There's Something Stuck Up In The Chimney/Bob Rivers

UKept, the song from Borders constant loop is "It's a Marshmallow World". I don't know who sings it, and I'm too lazy to look it up....but so help me....

I still don't know how I feel about the Bowie/Crosby song. I've heard it many times and still don't know if I like it.

DOTDOT, put a Christmas stocking in it! <----catagorically not nice.

Dazie, BNL makes a fine Xmas album. Maybe that makes me decidedly un-cool, but there it is.

And Ha! Shelby, I'd forgotten about that Weird Al song....ahhh, Y2K.

Can't help it. I'm a sucker for harmonies and Bowie absolutely brings so much to that song. That and the contrast between Bing and David. That kind of music just makes me melt.

Re: Marshmallow World...you mean this one (http://www.amazon.com/Marshmallow-World-...)
by Raul Malo?

His last name literally means "bad." After viewing the video, I can die knowing why.

You're welcome.

No, then we'd be the Special People's Club.

I almost didn't say that, thought it might be offensive. WHAT HAS BECOME OF ME?! Joel...I blame your departure for my neutering.

Fuck fuck fuck. poop. ass.
There. Much better.

I can't figure out how to keep the nog from coagulating in the piss and vinegar. Little help here.
