Ten Million Pounds of Sludge

R.I.P. Tim Russert

Friday, June 13, 2008

Damn. Meet the Press was a great show and Tim Russert was a smart, brave journalist. There seem to be so few out there, especially on American TV.

Sad news indeed.
He was only 58 too.

Tim was awesome. I'll never forget the night of the 2000 elections when he whipped out that white dry erase board and started going to town. He always had a way of asking questions and making his points without being snarky. I liked that about him especially.

Meet the Press has been a Sunday morning tradition for me for probably ten years. It's pretty much the only television news program I watch, because no one was better at making politicians squirm than Russert. While he didn't shy from confronting them, he was still civil about it, and he made sure he had the facts and quotes to back himself up. I would get giddy when he would say "are you sure about that?" because you knew he was getting ready to hand their ass to them, usually using the interviewee's own words from a few months prior.
