TOWNIE GUIDE TO: Smokin' Smokes
Two Lawrencians help the cigarette set find their way amid the public smoking ban.
Dave Swenson of Arthur Dodge notoriety, and Dan Pound of the Danny Pound Band, which also includes Swenson.
Combined time in Lawrence: 23 years
Other credentials: Remiss nicotine addicts, longtime purveyors of Lawrence bar scene, what with being rock stars.
Morning
Dave: Have a cigarette in your car on the way to Milton's. Then walk down to the Pig and have a smoke afterward. Or I guess you could smoke on the sidewalk patio at Milton's.
Dan: I think it would be kind of rude.
Dave: Yeah.
Mid-morning
Dave: We'd still be at the Pig having a coffee. They sell smokes there now.
Dan: All the normal stuff, plus American Spirit.
Dave: That's what we both smoke.
Dan: Additive-free. Healthy cigarettes is what we smoke.
Lunch
Dave: Go to the Bird (the Pink Flamingo Club, a stripping establishment). You can still smoke at the Bird. Can't you?
lawrence.com: Are they outside city limits?
Dave: I think so. I don't know. But go to the Bird, smoke and check out the birdies.
Dan: Eat some steak on their buffet.
Mid-afternoon
Dave: Drive out into the country and smoke cigarettes. Go see (developer) Doug Compton's house.
Dan: It's something else.
Dave: Continue circling around in the country. Maybe go out to the lake, go out to Lone Star Lake.
lawrence.com: You can still smoke in your car, huh.
Dave: That's right.
Dinner
Dan: Go to Free State. Have a nice beer. Just one.
lawrence.com: Smoking is always kosher on that patio, right?
Dan: Oh yes. What else would you do while drinking a Free State beer?
Late night
Dave: Go to the Pool Room and a have a cigarette on their awesome patio, which consists of a picnic table. Then head to Stu's.
lawrence.com: Because the owner was very outspoken against the smoking ban?
Dan: Was he?
Dave: Anyway, go to Stu's. Then slide on down to Rick's Place and have a smoke there. Then, head over to Harbour Lights' smoking patio. Then Louise's Downtown.
Dan: How many cigarettes do we have left at this point?
Dave: From there, to the Replay. And then Eighth Street Taproom.
lawrence.com: So you're saying all those places are smoker-friendly, with adequate outdoors smoking accommodations.
Dan: Most definitely.
Townie wisdom
Dave: The best advice for smokers new to Lawrence is to quit smoking.
Dan: I'm having a hard time breathing right now.
