Halo 3 (360)

The year was 2007. The date: Sept. 25. The day: Tuesday. 00:00:01 hours. The floodgates opened. Gamers around the world united as one to herald the game they'd be waiting for three years now. It's here. And already sales are poised to top that of Spiderman 3, Harry Potter and all other forms of entertainment know to gentle mankind.

Or not so gentle, as is the case with Halo. Since the shoot-em-up blockbuster Halo 1 debuted with the original Xbox days after Sept. 11, 2001, and Halo 2 after it in Nov. 2004, no game has been as highly coveted as Halo 3. As long prophesied by gamers and analysts everywhere, Halo 3 will likely mark the triumph of the gaming industry over Hollywood, literature, and whatever other forms of entertainment there are out there. Day one sales for the current record holder-Spiderman 3, produced by Halo's Microsoft competitor Sony Entertainment-are $151 million, and Halo 3 is predicted to easily meet its first-day goal of $155 million. Halo 2 sold $125 million on its first day.

Regardless of the ultimate tally, our master (chief, heh) gamer Dan Ryckert is plowing through the campaign mode-wasting not too much time on the addictive multiplayer online mode-and will unveil his review shortly, hopefully by this weekend. In the meantime-if you're not among the thousands playing right now, which evidently you're not, reading some boring-ass write-up-save up your 6,500 pennies for the game and buy it as soon as it's (again) available in stores. Though we haven't yet played it through enough to give it a proper review, we've played it all night and can say this much for now: it's amazing. Lives up to every bit of the hype. This ain't no Halo 2 crap. Hasta pronto...
