Karl Gehring

Karl was born in Greensboro, N.C. but spent the majority of his youth in Leavenworth, Kan.

After spending time at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, and Kansas University, Karl was offered a part-time position at the Lawrence Journal-World in 2000. After a brief hiatus, Karl returned to the Journal-World newsroom as a full-time graphic artist and illustrator in 2005.

In his spare time, Karl teaches introductory drawing classes at the Lawrence Arts Center at 940 N.H. The majority of his formal artistic training revolves around observational drawing and painting. "Teaching classes has given me the opportunity not only to help others enjoy a higher-level of art, but it helps me look at my own work from a fresh perspective. I've learned just as much from teaching as my students have from taking the class."

In addition to crafting visual support for print and online stories, Karl is a serious science-fiction and history geek. His desk-collection of Warcraft figurines is the envy of the newsroom.
