Delicious/Nutritious: Apples ripe for fall recipes

No apples for me whether cooked or raw. Won't even eat bacon if it was smoked with apple wood. Just seeing the word still makes my stomach churn a bit after more than 35 years. One night when I was 16 I came down with a 24 hour stomach flu. Just happened to have eaten two apple dumplings and some apple cobbler a few hours earlier. It wasn't pretty. Put me off them forever.

No tie ever unless I'm going to a funeral or wedding. I "clean up well" and can be a pretty snappy dresser but ties ---- nope and never unless it's absolutely required.

Local, regional artists to display work at annual arts and crafts festival

And I used to exhibit but never again. Poorly organized and more of a bad craft fair of things made from recycled pop bottles. It's BAD and boring. If you bring your crochet hooks you could possibly join a circle of boredom.

Review: Overlong, overwrought 'Ragtime' misses mark for grand opening

After several decades it's often better to just walk away gracefully and pass the torch after a major project is finished. Sandra Shaw did it with Bert Nash, Ann Evans did it with the Arts Center. I think it's time for Mary to do the same.

Nothing personal against any of them because all three did great things, but at a certain point things get stale. Get some new blood and life. It's the perfect time.

Look familiar? After many TV roles, Lawrence native lands lead in TV series

A very stiffly starched hat, with a black stripe, a trim dress with the nursing school pin on the lapel, white stockings, and white heels. That's what my mom wore in the early '60s when she was a floor nurse. The style of the hat also depended on the school you attended.

Never been on Wakarusa Drive? The entire area looks like sections of Metcalf Avenue.

Lawrence joint makes Zagat’s ‘Best Burgers’ list

I've only been there twice but never had a burger there. Just been there with friends for beer and a big basket (or two) of fries. They aren't the best I've ever had but they're inexpensive and I'm a potato chip or french fry addict so it works for me even if they are frozen potatoes.

Life lessons

I wish Sam Brownback and all those who supported his decision to cut funding for the arts in Kansas would/could read this article. This is a real-life example of why State funding is critical and illustrates the importance of access to the arts and art programs for everyone is essential.

Off the Beaten Plate: Chicken and Waffles at the Burger Stand

I agree. I don't eat traditional foods for traditional meals. I'll eat lasagna or pizza for breakfast and then have a salad or vegetable stir-fry for dinner or the other way around. but the idea of waffles and chicken together at any time of the day sounds pretty awful.
