A lack of unfounded optimism doesn't necessarily entail an inherent pessimism. Of course this sort of who you would call a pessimist would probably prefer to be called a realist, but I really have no idea if I am consistently any of these things.
I am, however, the person who is constantly trying to get my friends to vote even though I personally have very little confidence that the system is anywhere near accurate. I do vote, and I try to get people to do it, and yet I honestly don't believe that it makes a big enough difference to justify the claim that makes voting a moral obligation. Under this definition, I fall under the category of people who does the same thing over and over with the same result, yet continues to do so hoping that will someday change. This definition is synonymous with that of a crazy person. But I'm willing to admit that.
And I read the news, and I fight for justice, but I'm not trying to justify myself. I'm just saying it's possible to be realistic and still participate.
Thanks for writing.

I don't know, I don't see any reason at all - in the world or in your blog - to shore up the statement that "everything is going to be just fine". Just because we've "recovered from the oligarchy's foul work before" doesn't mean it's going to happen again. The longer we go without anything happening is the closer we get to things getting decidedly worse.
And how are the people in power going to be replaced? Democratically? The current process is a mock up to convince people that power is being shifted every four years or so, when it fact it isn't. The previous "victory" in the White House (regarding the democratic take over of the House and Sentate) wasn't a dramatic change, it was predictable, and as such, was planned for.
Unreasonable optimism is worse than over-generalized complaining.

I had a buddy who stayed awake for 100 hours straight once. At around hour 80 we decided to drive to Colorado. While somewhere deep within the Rocky Mountains he decided to take some of those pills that you get at truck stops to help him out. He took six with a mountain dew before reading the back that said "Never take more than one at a time or with a caffeinated beverage." I've never seen someone come so close to dying without actually dying.
I'm glad you got some sleep. Great blog.
