Lawrence Children's Choir Spring Concert -- 03/12/05 at Lawrence High School

Don't tell the director but...the Germans will prefer the music the kids sing in American. Europeans aren't impressed when American's try to sing in European native languages. It's a snob thing. They want to hear Shenandoah. It's sad but true.

Losing to the kitty

My cat is in love with my husband and only my husband and we never see her until my husband surfaces, then the cat, like his little, furry, shadow, scurries around behind him until he goes to bed. That's when I meet up with her. I am her rival. She makes sure he stays pinned to his side of the bed, so I am blissfully unaware of her. But if I ever stray to that side of the bed, kitty lets me know that ACCESS is DENIED.

My grandma's obit

On another note, I do a lot of family history research and one of our relatives was completely omitted from his father's obituary. He actually died before his father so he couldn't be a "survivor" but should the obit writer have mentioned him as a former member of the man's family? He was the deceased son. A whole branch of the family tree was cut off.

Bob Huggins is a jerk

Here's what I think would be REALLY interesting. If Danny Manning would apply for the K-State Job! I know....you are all gasping in horror but he's been assisting for a while now and even though he embodies the spirit of KU...he has a family and would still be doing the people of the state of Kansas a service. What say you to that!

A tiny part of the problem

Someone once mentioned the Reuter building should be an interactive museum along the lines of a City Museum in St. Louis where people of all ages can interact with art, performing and visual. If it's done right, that would be a HUGE tourist draw and a really creative out of the box way to have galleries. With a benefactor, assitance from KU and Simons and the city, projects designed by Van Go, murals by Lowenstein, weird concrete sculptures sponsored by Penny's, a huge wax chandelier made and donated by the artists at Waxman candles.... that is the way to honor our artists and give birth to the notion that a creative economy can generate income.

The difference between a Lawrence Exploratorium Cafegymatorium 21 Century Museum or Coolness and the Art Center is...this place would be open for spontaneous pleasure and have a great restaurant/event space.

If Simons doesn't do it....The East Lawrence Gentrification Project led by Bo Harris might. (or the Lawrence will get "scooped" once again by Kansas City!)

Thirtysomething

I think I know what you mean. My sister was in an imaginary "predicament" then found a guy and had a baby in her 40th year. When men are single at 33 they are extending their adolescents. Women don't really do that. We constantly EVOLVE. All I can think is they we are biologically programmed to be raising our children in our 30's and if we aren't it sort of feels weird. AND I don't think it's 100% socially imposed. I think there is a chemical componant. We are fortunate as liberated women of America to have the choice to be independant. I envy women who don't have to pinch pennies and can actually get a full nights sleep on a regular basis. I've been raising kids for 13 years and I have another 16 years left. We all have our "crosses".

The Library Proposals

The developers are banking on the fact that Major National Retail chains will take up the retail, not mom and pop. They are making sure the little guys stay out of the retail by making the rent outrageous.

How about the empty retail where the Old Children's Bookstore was. I hope that one stays empty FOREVER. The landlord closed that store so he could intentional raise the rent. He's lost thousands of dollars every month it isn't rented. KARMA baby!

So, we should all be prepping ourselves for the day when the only stores downtown are the ones on the plaze, Banana Repulic, The Limited, The body shop, and maybe even a Dean and Deluca. Then we will all have to move to Baldwin and restore their downtown.

If anyone wants to get in on the bottom floor, there are buildings for sale in downtown Baldwin! OOO I should'nt say that too loudly or Mr. Comton and his buddy Larry Brown will be snapping up the place in NO TIME! (By the way, larryville was named when Larry Brown was the Coach!)

The Library Proposals

I am looking forward to the new library actually catering to the needs of families in this town. Unfortunatley, the Carnegie Library will no longer hold books. It's most likely going to be gutted and turned into another city "office". Parks and Rec LOVES to build ugly cubicles! There are plans on the table for a modern addition to the Carnegie complete with lots of Glass and Metal to house an elevator. Accessiblity is an issue with that location. An elevator is fine. I just wish the architects would consider blending it into the historic building, not building the Pompidou Center into the back of the building. UGH!

The Riverfront proposal is interesting because it "corrects'" or attempts to correct the development mistakes of the past. And tries to do it in a "historically aware" way. I want to the Reuter Organ Buiding to be a City Museum like the one in St. Louis. I'd like to see a family friendly restaurant build into the development. A place where parents can eat decent food and the kids can climb on a unique rubber sculpture?

I see the new library as an excuse to make Lawrence better in other ways too. It's just going to take a lot of visionary voices.

Lawrence, Ego As Big As You Think

Yeah, I used to think Lawrence was this GREAT place to raise kids. But whenever we go visit friends in other cities, its obvious to me that Lawrence has a long way to go. AND the city will always focus on college kids and old people trying to act young by affiliation. Even the schools aren't what they were and other school districts in other parts of the U.S. don't charge parents to send their kids to public school.

I just don't feel welcome here. It's turning into an "old boys club".
