The Buzz is banned

Have you seen the movie "Idiocracy"? It's a good one.
There are instances in our society that make me realize that we ARE moving toward this type of society. Hearing that commercial was one of them. It won't make me ban the Buzz (although KEXP and KJHK are a million times better and I barely listen to the Buzz anymore anyway), at least they do shuffle weekends and play better music than most other stations---that's not saying a lot.
But the point is that, as the years go by, the masses are increasingly embracing this type of lowest common denominator thinking.
If you haven't seen "Idiocracy"... you, and everyone, REALLY need to see it. You'll see it, then you'll see it around you.
Banning the Buzz just gives those lowest common denominator types fuel to make fun of us. I'd rather just point out how they are helping propel us, as a society, toward idiocy.

Church and state share bunk at 'Jesus Camp'

I saw it last night. I think it would have been interesting to sit her down with a muslim extremist who also targets children and they could compare notes. Maybe they'd be amazed at what they have in common.
It's sad. There are so many good messages that are taught in religion..... WHY CAN'T TOLERANCE BE TAUGHT TOO???????
Why is YOUR religion and YOUR way the ONLY relgion and no one else is acceptable? (I mean this for any religion that teaches intolerance like the extremists in this movie)

This year's books

I've got a book to add, one that might not be on the top of everyone's list. Not up there with books like Owen Meany, or The Fountainhead.
I loved this book though. I especially recommend it for anyone involved in music, whether you're a musician, a label, a promoter, reviewer or just a music fan and at least you are old enough to remember the big huge hit mid 90s radio song, "Closing Time" by Semisonic.

"So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star" by Jacob Slichter

He was the drummer for Semisonic but also a Harvard grad with an amazing wit. The book is about the band's rise and fall from fame and glory. The first page had me laughing out loud:

When my friends introduce me to their friends, if often goes like this:

"Bob, this is Jake, Jake's a rock star!"

Bob looks me over. "Really?"

"Well, I don't know if I'd call myself a--"

My friend continues. "Jake's the drummer in Semisonic."

Bob smiles and shurgs. "Semisonic? Never heard of you."

"Most people don't know who we--"

"Jake, don't be so modest! Come on, Bob, you know Semisonic. You heard them all the time on the radio. Remember the song 'Closing Time' ?"

"Wow, you worte 'Closing Time' ?"

"No, I'm the drummer."

Bob divides "Closing Time" by "drummer" and remains moderately impressed.............

Church and state share bunk at 'Jesus Camp'

i.e. if some of these church groups spent as much time trying to weed out the rotten apples among their own ranks and they do trying to spread their gospel to people who are having a nice, quiet walk in their downtown (well the walk was supposed to be nice and quiet), maybe things would be better for all of us.

Church and state share bunk at 'Jesus Camp'

Several months ago, there was a large group from some Baptist church (not in Lawrence) occupying every corner and mid block of downtown Lawrence. They were handing out pamphlets and talking to passersby.
I made a point to say, "Baptists - oh that's what Fred Phelps is!" to my friends but within earshot of the church group people. I want them to understand that people in their own ranks are hurting them more than the sinners (probably everyone in Lawrence in their minds) they are trying to help.

Church and state share bunk at 'Jesus Camp'

The tolerant among the religious need to be A LOT LESS TOLERANT of the intolerant. When the TOLERANT stop TOLERATING the INTOLERANT.... I won't think of the religious as intolerant.
This goes for ALL religions.

Music & movies

I mean really..... how could you go wrong with this plot?

A beautiful muse comes down to earth and meets an artist and a nightclub owner, and helps them fulfill their dreams to build a roller-disco venture.

featuring the musical talents of Olivia Newton-John, Electric Light Orchestra, the Tubes, and Cliff Richard, with a touch of cartoon from animator Don Bluth.
