The KU Swing Society has moved Tuesday Nite Swing to the Kansas Student Union, 6th Floor, Kansas room. Admission is free, and lessons now run 8pm -8:45pm, with open social dancing till 11pm. We will be at this location unless the Union has a conflicting event, then we'll be a the ECM. Join us afterwards for coffee - location to be announced at the dance. If you'd like more info on swing dance, links or want to check that we're not snowed out, check out:
This is a way old article, but I wanted to comment that I agree with Emily, in that Joel has created a very "all-welcome" store. I have felt like the "odd-girl-out" at some comic book stores, and yet I can always find friendly conversation and respect at Astrokitty's. I'm happy that he makes it easy to support local business.
Our lessons are meant to get people dancing for the first time. This is kinda hard to do with limited teachers, & we have a LOT of new people coming in every Tues. There are also many kinds of swing dancing available that people want to learn. We dont have a lot of time at the ECM, so we have to do that as quickly as possible, but our more experienced dancers are almost always available afterwards for questions or more practice. But, we're just students - we're not professionals. We have special dates for the professionals to come in at HUGELY discounted group prices, for longer/more vigorous classes. We're just trying to help people who want to get started. Part of the learning process for any dancer is also in their actions - dancing with as many people as possible, going to outside events & asking questions & "how did you do that" of other dancers. If you have any questions, suggestions or further criticisms, please email kuswingkid at sbcglobal.net or contact our website : www.groups.yahoo.com/kuswingsociety
Bleh. The second room's music consisted of bad hip hop from 3 years ago - about as fresh as a bag of Doritos left outside for a month during a wet and humid summer. The crowd was pretty bland and to sit at any of the group seats, you had to "buy a bottle" -- lame. Pathetically pretending to be New York quality in Lawrence, KS just doesnt go over well. Most of the floor staff (except the "wanna-be VIP" bouncers, but even they were polite. Their job was just useless and stupid - not their fault) seemed extremely friendly and helpful, and the bathrooms were pretty nice in the second room (yeah, televisons in stalls! While you puke you can catch Dynasty!! A plus at any facility!) I liked the underlit portion of the floor, but found that my sneakers had too much traction to do any real dancing on the rest of the floor. Other than that, it wasnt too bad of a floor. I'll just wear slicker shoes next time.
The first room played bad pseudo-70's music only suitable for the 30 and up crowd who listen to KUDL. It had a small dance floor, which was unused and unlit. The least they could have done was play decent house or something upbeat and danceable in that room. Entering there from the main room always felt like someone had thrown a wet rag over your head, it was that boring. Thankfully, there was a pool table to entertain in what was otherwise a worthless waste of space.
Overall, I'd only go PERHAPS twice a year, with a very large group of very drunk, rowdy friends, IF I was hard up with nothing else to do in Lawrence. I havent eaten there, so Im giving them a 7 for the benefit of a doubt.
Swing tonight (1-4-05) is canceled due to the Ice Storm. Getting up the KU hills is treacherous. Swing will continue as usual after tonight. - Misha Thompson, KU Swing Society President

This band is really awesome, and their music is great to swing dance to! Certainly check them out! <3
