Theories on the multiple meanings of 'Synecdoche, NY'

After two viewings of Synecdoche I can say one of the main points that separates it from Mulholland Drive (or Inland Empire or any number of Lynch films), is its lack of a dominant reality to use as a key. In Mulholland Drive, the critical consensus is that part of the movie "happened" to the characters (objective reality) while the other part is imagined by a character (subjective reality) and interpreted in context of the former. (Kind of like an inverted Wizard of Oz). In Synecdoche, there is no easy distinction. From the moment Caden wakes up the film is afloat in subjectivity. (Notice the cartoon character resembling Caden on a television show dealing with terminal illness). While Ms. Dargis' theory offers a nice little framing device for the film, it seems tenuous at best. The part at the end of the film with the voiceover saying "Now it's 7:45" could just as easily be taken as a metaphor for the fleeting, transient nature of life. My point being, the last-minute-of-life-theory may provide some comfort to those seeking a simple structure and order within a playful, confounding, piece of art, but it strikes me as a reductive projection, one that has been employed before with better success.
