The Calm Before the Thanksgiving Storm

Thanks for the Winehouse and Stewart pics! Right place, right time. I'm a pseudo-fan of Martha. I watched her new show before it switched channels (and that whole class thing). My favorite moment was when Snoop was on and they tried to fix something easy: mashed potatoes. Turns out, Snoop likes to cook and had a lot of issues with Martha's mashed potato recipes.

"Dune" by Frank Herbert.

I agree, it is definitely different from anything out there at the time. I'm paraphrasing from "The Writer's Almanac" a little bit, but it was said that Herbert was working at a research facility that faced the desert at the time and his inspiration for "Dune" was based on thinking about what would happen if the sand turned against people. Which, really, is a great story idea. I just don't think that Herbert developed it that well into one book, although I had a friend tell me today that some of what I would call red herrings in "Dune" are elaborated on in later books. One of my primary issues with "Dune" is it doesn't stand alone, but it doesn't inspire more reading, like "Lord of the Rings" does.

"Dreams from My Father" by Barack Obama

I was really happy to see a glossary/appendix in the back of "Dune". After discovering the glossary only after reading all of "A Clockwork Orange", that's something I like to check for in books that have a whole different language in them.

"A Widow for One Year" by John Irving

I'm not a huge fan of Vonnegut, who I find a little too ramble-y old man for my taste, especially his later stuff. Most writers tend to have set formulas, but sometimes they don't always turn out the most successful work. Maybe "Widow" would work as an epic poem or done in the style of Kanye West.

Cooling off with cukes, turbo hummus, and tzatziki

Made tzatziki for the first time last night for the very same reason. We had a giant cucumber of doom (about the size of a bottle of wine), so I made a salad a couple of nights ago and still had half left. I did red wine vinegar instead of lemon and added some fresh mint. With homemade pita, tasty goodness and definitely better this morning now that the flavors melded.

"Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond

Thanks, lori!

One of the nice things about "Guns" is that the chapters are broken into pretty small sections, two or three pages at most. Great for reading right before bed or waiting for an appointment and there's enough continuation between sections that its easy to pick up and put back down without losing the train of thought.
