I've only read the first book in the Hunger Games. I liked it. That said, the same flaws you cite in the movie are present in the book. The rule change at the end is definitely forced. And the other characters in the book, except for maybe Rue, are very flat. But the appeal of the book is the same in realty TV: it's fun to watch the spectacle unfold even though it's often bumbling and unbelievable.
I enjoyed this review. I always appreciate and tend to agree with your commentary, Eric.
