(&*^%$#@! this new computer for erasing my reply. Basically, I'm in no position to criticize the way anyone parents their kids..I'd like to be the kind of parent that has their kids earn their somewhat extravagant toys as you do.. I'm just in the convenient position to gross out at what I see as the crass commercialism of the this one in particular. And as much as I'd like to respect AG's intentions, I doubt they exist. These toys are serious moneymakers.
PS, boy do i LOVE Christmas, despite being the non-religious sort. I spoil my family as much as I can afford to come the holiday. And we're at a point now where it's my parents and just us adult kids. It's still fun.
It must be one of those things that switches in your head when you have kids... I just totally can't relate. Spending a hundred bucks on a doll is generally offputting to me, but the irony of that doll being homeless is just kinda.. ick.
It also isn't to say that there are way more heinous toys out there.. but I do remember walking past an American Girl store last year in Chicago and being amazed at the level of commerce buzzing in that place. It's a freaking pink gold mine.
Generally I don't think Lifetime is really messing with anything... the season was shooting for the most part before the network-switching debacle. I think it's more that the challenges have been totally dull and not all that uh, challenging. No making a look out of something bought at the grocery store... nothing made out of car parts. It's too straightforward. There seem to be a couple of designers that are pretty talented but overall it doesn't really seem to be comparable experience-wise on the designers' end compared to other seasons. I'm thisclose to not watching it anymore, which is a total surprise.
Las Vegas is perfect for Top Chef. I was dying to try that Caesar salad or the beef stew.
Yeah, I don't really get that question either, btw. I don't think knowing the intricacies of their government has much to do with understanding that nuclear weapons in a country that has such tense relationships with other governments in the region might be a bad idea.
Just popped in to add also that it's not that I don't support anyone that's fighting for their freedom... I'm rooting for the opposition. I'm just a bit cynical about how free they will be in either case... the candidates people can vote for have to be approved by the higher ups. Not so much free.
I'm not sure I'm looking down my nose at Iran. I know enough not to be completely ignorant, thanks to the Iranian who has become part of my immediate family. Her family had to leave the country during the revolution. All I'm saying is that I'm no expert, and so I'm sort of reluctant to scream for Mousavi when it seems that overall no matter what happens a big shift in the country's politics probably won't happen. Because I don't trust a theocratic model of government doesn't mean I always trust democracies, either. I don't think it's going to be controversial to say that despite its flaws, I still think our democracy is hugely preferable to live under.
I don't think Bush stole the second election, and his reelection didn't cause nearly as much of a stir as his first election, the 'stealability' of which is more debatable - you can find youtube videos of the protests in DC and elsewhere on Bush's inauguration day. Remember that month of unrest? Obviously it wasn't to the scale of what's going on in Iran now, but people in the US don't tend to be detained anywhere on the level they are in Iran for holding opposing viewpoints. Nobody has stormed KU's dorms.
Sorry this is a little half baked... time to go eat lunch!

'Top Chef' takes slice out of 'Project Runway'
I'm with you on both counts.
