To me guns are a lot like sex. Do we want it done in public a lot? No (well, not most people). Is there a proper time place and use of it? Yes. Should children be told all about it, in gory detail, as soon as they are able to understand? For their own sake, probably yes.

Banning something (sex or guns for instance) is a sure fire way to make a lot of people want it even more. Especially if you are trying to ban something OTHERS do and you do not care to do. (Why are so many laws aimed at the OTHER guy, and not oneself?).

Providing a ton of good and accurate information, not driven by bias or propoganda, is probably a good approach on a lot of topics. Sex and guns included. Unless of course you are the Supreme Being and you are absolutely all-knowing; in which case feel free to ban anything you want. However, if you are a normal human being (fallible) you may want to adopt the axiom that you will not try to control other people, and hope they adopt the same rule when it comes to telling you how to run your life. And by you, I am using it in the "we" sense, not aiming at anyone in particular......

I loved the little prince ...long ago when I was newer and read it for the first dozen times. Thanks for reminding me, and others, that sometimes working to stay in one place, and be happy, is the best way to stay in one place and be happy. It takes time to do a lot of things right. But working towards the goals of "being tamed" or "taming" are often worth the effort and the time that it takes.

I have heard it said (read it too) that one single big volcanic eruption puts more carbon and other "bad" things into the air then does/will all of the human beings who have ever lived on earth. If that is true, it appears rather arrogant to think that humankind can make one tiny dent in what may just be a naturally occuring cycle. If nature itself is the main cause of global warming, maybe all the human efforts to prevent/delay it are - at best - just done to make us feel less impotent or - at worst - ways for scientists or politicians to make more money or have more power?

I believe there cannot hardly be anything much worse then the loss of a child. But I have to believe that may be because I am not fully informed or aware of the other options. I do believe that good can come from pain and sadness, in time. I've seen it happen quite often - so hang in there and pay attention. Meanwhile, I hope your baby girl and all concerned survive this horrific pain & loss without it doing too much serious or permanent damage to anything vitally important.

The AP and a lot of old school media are afraid of blogs. They sniff at them as not real journalism (and a lot are not). But what it really sounds like is turf battles. Blogs have their place, and so does standard media outlet sources. Checks and balances (in this day and age of instant info, people are much more able and likely to do some fact checking of their own!) is always a good thing. Unless you want to have a strangle hold on the information - and minds - available to others.

Fair use rules were never intended to prevent the flow of information not being used for $$ making purposes. The main stream media had better be careful about their elitism and snobby attitudes. The young people who grew up using the internet a lot are not likely to turn to an older source of information that has done all it could to prevent them from obtaining information elsewhere.

So, AP - embrace the bloggers. Take them in. Use them. Make them your friends. Or be aware that this is a war you may lose big time.

In all seriousness - the best way to combat any entrenched ideas or seriously skewed view points is to JOIN THEM and work from within. That tactic may sound a bit like selling out, but more then one revolution succeeded because enough "spies" were doing their work from inside the institution being chanllenged. It takes patience and commitment to infiltrate and work for change. Like the really committed teachers who continue to teach new ideas, even to people who don't want to learn. Or the 20+ years of legal planning that the NAACP engaged in before filing Brown v. Topeka. Setting a good example, for a long long time, to all but especially to those you want to convince of your rectitude or have join you, may not be nearly as "fun" or provide immediate gratification, but in the long run (decades of it), it has the best chance of bringing about real change.

Unless of course you have a magic wand or will resort to using nuclear weapons..........those things can make an immediate impact....

Yea. Expect nothing. And enjoy the good (if it comes). That's a safe way to be with people who aren't great with healthy relationship stuff. Oh, and learn how NOT to do it from them!
