We are lucky in that the Lawrence area offers a variety of birthing options: several very competent, highly skilled homebirth midwives, the Birth Center in Topeka, and several hospitals. Some area hospitals extend privileges to certified nurse midwives, and LMH is slowly, finally, working on this option.
Could you give me some recommendations from gloves for cold weather riding? I'd like to buy hubby some good ones for Christmas; he commutes every day, about 6.5 miles each way, no matter the temp. Last year I dropped 60 bucks on some gloves that I thought would be awesome, turns out his hands still freeze. Any recommendations? I don't mind dropping some cash (up to 100) to keep his hands warm, because I know he'll use them every day in the winter. I just don't want to spend that kind of money on riding gear that ultimately doesn't cut it.
Thanks! We don't often post, but we always enjoy your blog.
FYI, right when you blogged about bunnies, my hubby had an encounter with a baby rabbit. It actually jumped right when he was passing, hit him smack in the face, and then hopped off into the early morning twilight. You're not the only one attacked by cute, furry little animals.
If you ever want to try spaetzle, I have a press and a recipe you can borrow. Once again, something that is very labor intensive, but the noodles freeze well. Your meat and potatoes hubby might like them. We use them in place of potatoes in the "mashed potatoes and brown gravy" form. They also go well sauteed with onions and bacon, topped with melted swiss cheese.
Wow. I'm impressed that you're brave enough to publicly admit to the crescent roll substitute. I don't think I can go there, my grandmother would definitely haunt me, as I take enough liberties with her recipe as is. I'm not a hater, and I think the crescent roll is a great idea, I just don't think I can do it. I am more of the make-75-bierocks-and-freeze type of gal, so making the dough doesn't seem like that big of deal on that scale.
The one liberty I will admit to is the use of hot sauce in the meat mix. I use Tapatio, but any nice spicy hot sauce will do. I like my bierocks to have a little kick. And as an aside: my grandmother's recipe uses cabbage *and* sauerkraut. Overall it makes for a very flavorful little bierock.
Since you have German cooking in your blood, have you ever made spaezle? If so, how do you like to serve it?
Is this website now simply the cheesy "Go" section of the newspaper? LJWorld, you might as well shut this place down, if you think the typical Lawrence.com reader wants shit like this.
I love having a cold beer or a nice glass of wine while hanging out my laundry. On some things, you can have your cake and eat it, too. The golden rule of parenting (and I think this applies to all aspects of life): do what makes sense to you and what works for you and your family.
And what makes sense to me is drinking a beer while hanging out my laundry.
Did you run over Dotdot's dog on your drive to work, Andrew?
I always overestimate the time it will take me to get anywhere on my bike or scooter, and often seriously underestimate the time it takes to drive the car. Whether I stop to pet the cat or not. I don't know why that is; maybe an ingrained idea that the car is the pinnacle on the transportation pyramid, and therefore should get me there on time despite my poor planning? The disconnect of the drive in the car, with it's distractions in the form of the radio or CD player, vs the sense of awareness I feel on a vehicle that does not allow me to check my phone for a missed call or listen to my favorite station? Who knows?
Home births see a boost

On the hook for a rack; who's with me?
I like the old, brightly painted bike frames that are used as bike racks. Where did I see this? Maybe at the Spencer?

Beware the Kansas roaches and Alabama mice
This is why, despite their aloof, superior attitudes, cats still make great pets. We have two rude cats and no mice.
