I have always had great reverance for the Tank Man, so I vote for Tank Man Day. It is about him after all.
Or, if it's really about going to the Bourgeois Pig on a Tuesday, shouldn't it just be called Pig Day? It kind of has an ambiguous edge to it. It could be about anti-establishment, anti-authoritarian "pigs" or it could just be about getting a drink at the Pig on a Tuesday.
This kind of insight is what I missed, Joel. As a "blogger," you actully reflect on what blogging means. Until I read your blog for the first time sometime last year, I thought nothing of them, because they are so narcissistic. You're different. You bring up real issues that are worthy of discussion - and then you throw in a couple fun things for good measure. Besides that, you write well, which distinguishes you from most bloggers.
I look forward to reading more of what you write. And besides, I consider you more of an "online essayist" than a blogger. Anyone can blog; it takes talent to write essays. You have that talent and I appreciate you sharing it with us.
I just realized that I only posted sentences 6 and 7 from Hammermeister's book.
Here's sentence number 8:
"For him [Schopenhauer], beauty not only characterizes the successful work of art but also turns out to be an attribute of the ideas themselves that the genius contemplates in his ecstatic vision, as well as an attribute of every nonartistic object insofar as it can serve as an initiator of pure contemplation."
Wow. I was tagged! Cool. I'm geekier than you, mrs_cup_o_joel. Here's my book:
"The German Aesthetic Tradition" by Kai Hammermeister:
p. 123, sentences 6-8: "Since the sublime depends on the willful negation of the threatening aspects and, thus, willful overcoming of the will even before cognition can be achieved, beauty is conceived as cognition without struggle. Obviously, Schopenhauer's theory of beauty is also no less problematic."
Now that I think about it, even before I first voted in 1984, I was interested in the process. I clearly remember watching the election results in 1980 and collapsing across my bean bag in despair when it became clear that Reagan had won. The memory is so vivid. I even remember the color of the bean bag. It must have been quite traumatic.
My first election was in 1984. I was living in Germany at the time, so I subscribed to Newsweek or Time (I can't remember), read a lot of newspapers and generally spent quite a bit of time getting as much information as I could. I was 18 at the time, so maybe I was a little weird - for American standards anyway. In Europe it was a whole different ball game at the time - people my age back then were very interested and involved in politics. You were weird if you weren't. They also have a much higher voter turn out than we do.
You are a very fast reader, Joel! I definitely am not.
The only time I get to read anything "fun" that is strictly for pleasure is for about a half an hour before I go to sleep at night or at the airport. I have a long list of books I should read (when I retire maybe?) and from what you say about "The Road", I may have to add that one to the list.
Great! Now I feel good about getting me some Uggs. I won't have to feel guilty about succumbing to some crazy passing fashion trend like I would if started wearing a lot of patent leather and leggings.
And to answer your question, lori: I don't think the coveralls are going to cut it. I don't recall seeing any in Vogue!
Hmmmm...If they're as warm and comfy as you say they are, then maybe that could be my justification for getting a pair. that way I wouldn't feel like I'm just following some fashion trend. Besides, I always thought they looked pretty warm and comfy.
Until I googled them, I would never have thought that I could learn something about Uggs on Wikipedia, but here it is:
Not banned in China

Wow. That was a long sentence.
Cheers again!

Bill Meyer, RIP
From what I've seen of your work, Joel, I'm sure you were his pride and joy.
Nice tribute!

I guess they're only a possible passing trend here, since they've been around for so long down under.
