Clay's Cafe

If you want real honest to goodness canned product, then yes....Clay's is the place to be. Get over yourself, the reason the college "hipsters" have not invaded and ruined Clay's is probably because they expext more then gravy from a bag.

Whither Greasy Spoon?

Hey Lazz, Drakes was where The Orient is now. It was even owned by the same people that are running the place now. I will never forget the Oopps Omelet and how I was affected a mere hour after eating one, and yet I kept eating there. I've been in town for about 20yrs, and the only places I can think of that have been by Weavers was the woolworths lunchcounter or maybe the Sweetleaf(located where the Mad Greek is now). Try The Hole in the Wall Grill inside the Pool Room, they're open at 11am fri, sat, and sun. Last sat. he had a chorizo and egg breakfast for 3 bucks that was outstanding, it's not a breakfast place, but it's greasy and they always seem to have a breakfast item on special for the late rising crowd.

The Hole in the Wall Grill

Ordering food from a hole in the wall is not normal, but after eating the food I've been back several times. The buffalo sauce was splendid, and I think they bread the chicken strips(I guess everything that they bread) to order. The place had a real "cooked fresh" taste, nothing seemed from a bag. I can't verify this, but I know that the three times I ate the mozzarella sticks that they had to be hand-cut and breaded. I also tried the chicken fried steak special one day, and for 5 dollars I got a nice steak, REAL mashed pots(a little chunky, but I like that), gravy that was NOT premade, buttery corn(I couldn't tell if it was frozen or canned - just good), and a roll. I had grown to expect quality bar food, but this dinner blew me away, and now I'm pissed everytime they dont have a comfort special when I go there. I don't know where you can get a better value, maybe the rice bowl at La Parilla? Lunch at Royal Peking? A cheese-shoppe sandwich? I like them all, and now I'm adding this place as THE bar food joint in town.

Checkers Foods

The place in Manhattan had polished concrete floors, deals piled high, and the same sign. I do remember the layout was different, you could dash in and out. I will say that the Manhattan store is closer to Checkers in Lawrence then it is to any other grocery store I've been to.

Checkers Foods

I'm a Checkers fan for sure, but I'm a little confused by this paragraph:
In June of 1987, the IGA at 23rd and Louisiana was replaced by Checkers. Sixteen years later, it's still a single-location, family-run business, but not for long. Next year Checkers will open a store in Kansas City.

I lived in Manhattan for a year, and I remember shopping at the Checkers there. I always thought it was a chain, and now you tell me that this Checkers is the only one? Am I insane?

Jefferson's Restaurant

Try the Pool Room for good wings, and they charge for blue cheese(not to mention how awesome the blue cheese is). I'll take my burger from there too, much bigger AND cheaper!

Odessa's Cafe

I ate here the other day and my breakfast looked like something I made at home when I was almost out of sausage and eggs. I hear good things about the catfish and chicken, but I have my doubts.

Mad Greek Restaurant

I recently discovered that the rice is made with chicken base, and the pita is dipped in gyro grease. These are both items that they sell on veggie entrees. I will never eat there again. I could deal with the rude hostess(I think she's the owners daughter), but can't deal with them lying to my face.
