Hipster essay
I am not a Lawrence person, although I was born and raised here. In my opinion, true Lawrence people are granola eating, birkenstock wearing, downtown loving hippies, at least to a certain degree. The people who care just a little too much for my taste about everything-- they picket Starbucks and the Gap, they go to the train station to watch John Kerry pass by, they shoulder every cause in defense of the true spirit of Lawrence. Don't get me wrong-- I appreciate those people. I know they are the ones who make Lawrence what it is. I'm just not one of them. I'm content to sit on the sidelines and read their arguments and agree, or disagree, but not in such a way that these people will ever confront me about my opinions.

Opinion on the SLT
It would be sad for the Baker Wetlands to be destroyed; however, corporate America will one day prevail. We'll regret it, but one day we'll forget it.
Opinion on the smoking ban
It's nice to not have to wait 45 minutes for a seat in a restaurant when half of it is empty-- the smoking section. It's nice not to be seated on the other side of a half-wall and choke on smoke from the other side (as if the wall dividing the sections actually stops the smoke from passing over!) I never go to bars, and I can understand why people would want to smoke there... so that's too bad. But if you can't get through a 1 hour meal without smoking a cigarette, you should be concerned for your health.
Opinion on West Lawrence
I live on the West side of Lawrence. It's not a bad place. Sure, the neighborhoods full of cookie-cutter houses are a little grotesque, but they are still good homes for the people who live there.
