12 things to do this weekend
The summer doldrums seem to be picking up a bit and it looks like there's quite a lot to choose from for cool activities this weekend. As always, if there's something you know of that's a best bet, leave a comment or send an email to acgarrison@ljworld.com. Here's a few things we think are worth checking out.
Thursday community: Lance Fahy at the Cottin's farmers market
The singer/songwriter will give an acoustic set during the market at the hardware store at 19th and Mass. It runs from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Thursday community: Food Not Bombs free meal in South Park
The group has started a weekly free meal in the park Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.
Thursday film: Lawrence premiere of "My Friend Mott-ly" at Liberty Hall
This documentary is about late KC artist Mott-ly (AKA Lee Tisdale). It's described as an inspirational tale about the talented artist who went through complications of hemophilia and HIV before his death in 2007. The film starts at 7 p.m. and tickets are $5.
Thursday kitsch: Smiths DJ tribute at the Replay
Admittedly, I don't know a lot about this event, but on premise (just a load of Smiths tracks), consider me — former Manchester resident and perpetual lonely, awkward teenager — sold. It starts at 10 p.m. on the patio and cover is $3.
Weekend arts: Sunflower Artfest at Kill Creek Barn in De Soto
Area artists will be in full bloom at the show and benefit for the community barn. Admission is free and the events run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Read loads more about the barn's history and the events planned in Rob Roberts' story.
Friday geekery: Fractals at the Lawrence Public Library
Fractal geometry is just about as cool as it gets and count me in for fractal-related crafts. It's a free event, technically for kids, that starts at 1:30 p.m.
Friday music: Mike Roberts at Gaslight Gardens
A free night of acoustic music at the recently revamped venue in North Lawrence. It starts at 8 p.m.
Saturday arts: Allen Chen at Bracker's Good Earth Clays
Lawrence Arts Center artist in residence Allen Chen will be showing at a gathering for potters and those interested in ceramics. (Snacks provided, I hear.) It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1831 East 1450 Road.
Saturday music: Nine Forty Live celebration of Woody Guthrie's 100th
The American legend was born 100 years ago Saturday. The Midday Ramblers, Drakkar Sauna and many more are celebrating him at the Lawrence Arts Center starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10.
Saturday music: Liars at the Granada
New York three-piece dance-punk (though their constant experimentation makes them hard to define). Tickets are $14.
Sunday music: Daymoths at the Replay
A night of folk starts at $10 and has a $3 cover.
Sunday music: Hidden Pictures at the Replay
Lawrence/KC band with members from all over the scene will be having the Lawrence release party for their new album, "Rainbow Records." It's an early show with catchy indie pop (and glockenspiel, can't forget that) on the patio. Cover is $10. To learn more about them, check out my story from earlier in the week. (Sidenote: One reason Richard Gintowt's name may be familiar is that he used to work here. So, if you see him, feel free to critique my story on him at will.)

Where's the Clutch concert at the Granada that was on Thursday night? Always an awesome show.
