Oh, Lawrence. I love your strips and they make me homesick.

  2. leslie (Leslie vonHolten) says…

My bet would be that a Friday night movie series would be as popular as the summer Wednesday night city band.

  3. OnShakedown (Chris Tackett) says…

good god! does this not already exist? let's make it happen.

  4. thirtyeight (Dave Loewenstein) says…

I've heard a rumor that Mick Ranney, owner of Footprints, has put the wheels in motion to actually do what I've day dreamed here. The word is that it would be every week for two months beginning in June.

  5. Joel (Joel Mathis) says…

Our first night on honeymoon was spent in NYC's Bryant Park, next to the Public Library on 42nd Street (or thereabouts), watching "High Noon" after dark, camped out with a few thousand others on the park lawn.

    It was a magical evening.

Warhol's Empire State Building would be fun on the garage wall. It could run damn near all night. A big beacon illuminating a freshly reclaimed public space.

What a novel idea - if those sponsoring it can make sure that there is (a) litter control; (b) crowd control (which means making sure they don't bother the neighbors too much - noise, bathrooms, smoking, etc. etc.) and/or (c) pet control - a drive-in movie theater, without the cars!

Great stuff, Dave, this would be truly fabulous. (And regardless of the outcome, your strip is a marvelous vision of imagination. Can't wait to see what else you have in mind for our vacant lots ...)

FYI, for those of you who think this is a great idea, try to keep an eye on the SUA Film Series schedule up on campus. In past years they have shown films on a floating screen in Potter Lake, which you can watch from the Hill, on spring/summer Friday nights.

I had a meeting with some of the DLI people this morning, and got confirmation that Mick is worked on starting this up as a monthly series. He's still trying to get permission and work out the details.

  10. godjilla (Jill Ensley) says…

That is a fabulous idea, and as usual, a wonderfully executed suggestion, Mr. Loewenstein!

And if it doesn't work out...there's always the cemetery....

Matt is correct, it is rolling along. But what i found interesting (and Dave can chime in i'm wrong) is that Mick and Dave didn't come up with this together and one didn't inspire the other. Mick actually hadn't seen this cartoon when I talked w/ him about it. Both thought the wall would be cool for movies and this has just been a coincidence. A pretty cool one, no less.

If everything goes like it has so far, expect some movies this summer. And of course, more info will come as it comes.

  12. thirtyeight (Dave Loewenstein) says…

Chris- You're right, but to be fair this idea has been surfing the
collective semi-unconscious of 9th & New Hampshire ever since that wall presented itself.

Let's take the simulated reality of a movie one step further. I suggest we move in a tun of rubble to that vacant lot and finally give Lawrence an urban feeling, like Detroit. "Real" city people need their natual habitat. This would help bring down property values and provide a reason for the many newly renovated but empty shops and lofts in that area of town, which call out for some sort of explanation.
