My Favorite Game
Getting into World of Warcraft (WoW) can be quite intimidating. Modern WoW is more accessible to get into than WoW Classic. The classic version emulates what WoW was like back in 2006 without extensions, offering a more hardcore and slower experience.
Choosing a server
You have to choose a server, a character race and a class to play. This involves some tough decisions and you may only realize much later that what you’ve chosen isn’t a good fit. You want to choose a server with a healthy population but where you don’t have to queue to log in.
Choosing a race and a class
Choosing a server is a minor decision compared with choosing a race and a class. For example, each race has a skill only it can use. Blood Elves can silence other players. Don’t sweat all the details if you’re a first-time player and simply choose a race that appeals to you. WoW has 12 classes – warriors, hunters, priests, rogues, mages, warlocks, paladins, shamans, monks, druids, death knights and demon hunters. They all have specifications that determine their abilities and the role they play.
For example, would you rather deal out damage or keep players alive as a healer? If you’re experienced, choosing a class comes with more consideration as you realize the subtle distinctions.
Your first steps
Once you’ve made your character, you can log in and start playing. As a brand new level one player, you will start in a zone corresponding with your chosen race. You will find out what you need to know with in-game tutorials.
You just need to set out and begin talking to non-player characters with yellow exclamation points above their heads. You will pick up quests and you should take time to read the quest text to give you more context about why you need to find a certain item or kill a specific person.
To level boost or not
If you’re a new player and you buy Battle for Azeroth, you receive a level 110 boost token that you can apply to the character you create. This means you can immediately enjoy fun expansion content. However, if you level the old-fashioned way, you won’t skip out on quests and zones that take your character from zero to hero.
WoW classic boost from Boost Carry can be a fast and easy path to success in the game. For example, you don’t have to struggle with quests alone because you team up with skilled carries.
After you reach level 10, several new zones will become available to you. It doesn’t matter which zone you head to as they all have a self-contained storyline.
Connect with friends or do it alone
All of WoW’s quests can be done on your own. However, if you don’t participate in a community, you will miss out. There are several ways to make connections whilst playing.
You can talk in the in-game Chat channel or in Trade chat, which is intended for exchanging goods and services. The WoW subreddit is another place to connect with others. Of course, joining a guild is a great option. You can use the weekly guild recruitment thread on the subreddit to find a guild.
Immerse yourself in the story and mythology
A YouTube video by Nobbel87 is a good place to start to give you more ideas about the world and its lore in an entertaining way. WoWpedia gives you information about specific characters and areas. Over time you will find all the bits of knowledge adding up until you have a fuller understanding.
