"Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" — Who's your pick?

If you happen to follow me on Twitter, you probably already know that on Monday I got a call from a producer from "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" the Food Network hit starring bleach-blond foodie Guy Fieri, who is always on the look out for top-quality, unique food made from scratch in America's greasy spoons.

I decided to ask the Twitter-verse what Lawrence restaurants they would love to see on the show. To say the response I got was huge would be an understatement — the Tweets and e-mails have been coming fast and furious ever since. The local joints people have suggested that fit the show's focus:

The Basil Leaf Cafe
The Burger Stand at Dempsey's
Local Burger
Biemer's BBQ
A.B.'s Coffee and Crepes
La Familia
Gran-Daddy's BBQ
The Wheel
Rudy's
Johnny's Tavern
Bigg's BBQ
Cielito Lindo

So, I've decided to open up the question to all you non-Tweeting folks: What restaurant do you think the show should visit in Lawrence?

Let us know in the comments section below or Tweet us at @LJWPulse, @lcom or @shhenning.

Also, just so you know, the show's producers are just doing research for a POSSIBLE trip to the Kansas City area. Don't expect to see Guy Fieri's spiky head on Mass. Street anytime this week or anything.

Dempsey's... though Burrito King is a possibility.

  14. mitzibel (Misty Nuckolls) says…

Yup, already did Grinder's, and while they're appreciative of the extra business it brings in, apparently many folks who go don't understand the concept of a "dive".

  15. mitzibel (Misty Nuckolls) says…

Also, Burrito King is the only suggestion I've seen so far that I'd qualify as a dive, and the others don't quite do it for me as far as "diners" are concerned, either.

    Terrebonne. For real.

  17. tony88 (anonymous) says…

one could say A.B.'s is a dive, based solely on the building interior, the way you sit there and the cook is right in front of your face, and the way it's sort of hidden in the urban streetscape... and as far as breakfast goes in Lawrence, it's the only one that is completely unpretentious... don't get me wrong, i love Wheatfields. The others downtown there aren't bad either.

  18. tony88 (anonymous) says…

Terrebonne is good, but at those prices, i can't call it a dive... they're called "po' boys" for a reason. some places in New Orleans (in the French Quarter area) are selling "po' boys" for 15 to 20 clams. walk a mile in any direction out of the French Quarter and you can find them for $5-7 at a corner grocer.

You really need to come and check out Basil Leaf Cafe. Can't get any more of a dive than working out of the corner of a gas station. But this food is truly awesome!! Fine Italian Cuisine from a counter and you cant beat the prices:)
