Final Fridays Art Walks and Downtown Basketball Watch Party!
The following is the official list of Final Friday art walk events for March 25, 2011. There are several new venues and a couple of special events planned for this Friday, notably, the addition of two extraordinary musical performances at The Eldridge Hotel and the Hobbs Taylor Lofts. We are in Lawrence, a sports town as well as an arts town-you would be hard pressed to find an artist or gallerist not also planning for the tournament game on Friday-so many venues are adjusting their schedules to be open early, or adding spots to watch the game amidst the art walk. Get downtown early to view the work of over 250 artists, and grab some food and drinks to cheer on the Jayhawks!
Strecker Nelson gallery has begun furnishing shows at Pachamama's Restaurant, and will host a closing party for works by Jane Booth. Pachamama's is a new venue for Final Fridays.
The Eldridge has changed the time of the Genaro Mendez and Charles Badami Crystal Ballroom performance to 5 p.m., ending at 6:30. They will be showing the game in the Jayhawker Bar after the performance.
The Lawrence Arts Center has added a blues band performance, and a showing of prints by Patrick Giroux in the Hallmark Print Gallery downstairs.
The Lawrence Percolator will be a very kid-friendly and hands-on art show in which artist and engineer, Eric Farnsworth, will begin construction of a cardboard creature. Visitors are encouraged to participate in the project that will culminate in a parade of the sculpture on April 1st.
Almost all venues will be open at 5 p.m. Many FF art venues will be showing the game including Teller's Bar, The Eldridge (Jayhawker), Pachamama's and Henry's on 8th.

Come join in the fun, grab a tee, and help support Wonder Fair Gallery! Higher, recent drawings by Michael Krueger:The artworks for this exhibition explore a collective need to get higher, get lost, reach a higher place, and be transformed. The imagery in these drawings brings together a collection of utopian fetishes; objects and figures perched, often precariously, atop high places and craggy peaks. Through tiny glimpses of early American history and the so-called Age of Aquarius, the drawings also create warm but cautious vignettes of utopianism and escapism. Feelings of isolation, loneliness and abandonment permeate the drawings, contrasted by colorful elation and a sense of purpose through elevation.

"Native Son, Local Threads: Quilts Inspired by Richard Wright": A Central Junior High School Project with Artist Marla Jackson This spring, quilt artist Marla Jackson worked with Michel Loomis's ninth-grade English students at Lawrence's Central Junior High School to create textiles based on the haiku poems that author Richard Wright wrote late in life. Wright was an African American, and his powerful, sometimes controversial books included Native Son and Uncle Tom's Children. Much of his literature concerned racial themes, and his work arguably helped redefine discussions of race relations in America in the mid-20th century. Truth be told, many of Central Junior High's ninth-grade student/artists would have said school was OK, but not their favorite activity. But all that changed after Marla arrived. Marla labels what she does "visual literacy" and she somehow transformed and transfixed Central students, producing a terrific and unforgettable experience. The quilts on display here are the results of their work, and depict prominent cultural icons including Martin Luther King Jr., Richard Wright, President Obama, and Tupac.
"Pastel Landscapes and Pencil Portraits" by Peggy Shopen Peggy Shopen studied fine arts at KU in the 1970s. She's always loved to draw, paint and color, and has always been happiest when outside exploring or riding her bicycle. It was in the Integrated Humanities Program semester in Ireland that she discovered the most profound wild beauty of the ocean, the water, the mountains, the roses. When she came back to Kansas, Peggy was compelled to search here for what she really did know was here, but had to seek again: a beauty as profound. It was in Sudlow's landscape painting class where she discovered she was compelled to be outside in the fields, rediscovering the wildness and the beauty that was here. What you'll see in the exhibit is simply a reflection of the beauty she's been most grateful to discover and behold.
Lawrence Public Library Lower Level, 5-7 p.m.: "Encaustic Paintings" by Malissa Martin-Wilke, of Martin House Studio Malissa Martin-Wilke moved to Lawrence from Huston in late 2005. She paints primarily in encaustic, making her own encaustic paints and using a variety of tools to apply and manipulate the medium. Encaustic is composed of beeswax, resin, and pure pigments, and is the oldest painting medium still in use by modern artists. Dating back thousands of years, encaustic artwork from the ancient Egyptians still exists today. With "Malissa" meaning "honeybee" in Greek, Malissa feels that it is an especially fitting medium for her!
