  1. LAWRENCE ARTS CENTER (EXHIBITION RECEPTIONS)

Greek Myths and Chapel Boxes of the Present Day New works by Margo Kren May 9 to June 3

Several years ago Margo traveled to Greece for her own Odyssey around the islands—to see the ancient murals, sculptures and vases of Mikonos, Koronos and Santorini. During her travels she discovered Greek Chapel Boxes. These boxes are used to invoke the saint--alongside the roads, near lake sides and in the center of parking lots. The boxes are each constructed and adorned uniquely.

Kren felt an attraction to these chapel boxes which were very similar to the ones I had seen as a child living in Texas near the Rio Grande. Margo Kren’s artistic investigation of the Greek Chapel Boxes has led her to create a new body of work that will be on display at the Lawrence Arts Center.

Prairie Print Makers May 9 to June 3

To celebrate the legacy of the Prairie Print Makers, the Lawrence Arts Center will exhibit prints by four of its most notable charter members: Birger Sandzén, Herschel Logan, Norma Bassett Hall, and C.A. Seward. The Prairie Printmakers were formed in December 1930 with the goal to "further the interest of both artists and laymen in printmaking and collecting." Their contributions to Kansas art are exceptional not only because of the artistic quality and populist mission of their work, but because of their early focus on rural Kansas landscape and heritage. This exhibit is partially funded by the Kansas Arts Commission.

The New Old San Antonio: Tales from The Little Big Town April 29-June 17, 2011

This exhibition features the works of 33 artists with deep roots from San Antonio who are in various stages of their careers, from emerging artists to well-established artists with works in museum collections. Produced and curated by Rex Hausmann of the San Antonio, Texas studio program, Hausmann Millworks: A Creative Community, and Darin M. White of the Lawrence art collective b.a.l.m. (beauty, art and life movement), The New Old San Antonio builds upon a budding visual arts connection between the two cities that began with 2009’s The White Show, and is presented in memory of Chuck Ramirez & Marcia Gygli King.

The New Old San Antonio gathers responses artists who share what they love so dearly: their home town, artists, and art, creating a collection of work that any city would be proud to call their own. The show presents intimate conversations among the revered and established and the new and emerging.

  1. Jodi Brown: No Jacket required Opens Final Friday, May 27th 6-9pm Runs through Saturday, June 18th

The Invisible Hand Gallery 801 1/2 Massachusetts Suite D Lawrence, ks 66044

From the artist:

My work is a reaction against kitsch, contrasting the day to day reality of lived experience with cultural and personal fantasy. To sentimentalize - as well as eroticize, commoditize, and romanticize - life is to deny unpleasant realities and to exclude conflicting perceptions, so that the constructed veneer adjusts the picture of our histories to reflect a constant string of good times unmarred by boredom, anger, unhappiness, u...gliness, or anxiety. Ultimately, photos and other cultural ephemera treated in these ways are no longer a record of our histories and events, but a new creation occupying the space of truth; like retouching a photograph, kitsch creates an altered record of reality. A composite record must include the complexities and failures beyond the facade - the contact sheet rejects - but the tendency in American media culture is to project an inoffensive common denominator to the exclusion of all other representation. We must reject the impulse to disregard that which we find disturbing. What is truly disturbing is the denial of ugliness; the exclusion of the inherently unsettling leaves those who find no reflection of their own experience feeling unworthy of representation, both physically and psychically. No Jacket Required is a compilation of images derived from authors' book jacket photos. The images portray the churning realities of absurdity, sexuality, insecurity, and futility that lay beneath the glossy veneer. In breaking apart and reassembling cultural output, I am determined to engage as participant in - and not just receptacle for - the creation of American cultural identity.

  1. CLARE DOVETON, works on paper The Bourgeois Pig 6 E. 9th Street The Bourgeois Pig, recently featured on the front page of the Huffington Post at the number 5 spot in the Best College Coffee Shops in America feature, was highlighted in part because of their many years dedicated to progressive art shows. (The first artist to show at the Bourgeois Pig was William S. Burroughs.) This month, Clare Doveton, known primarily for her large and beautifully sprawling works on canvas, brings a series of smaller, more intimate works on paper. The pieces still reflect the brilliant colors of Kansas skies and expansive lands, but with a compelling intimacy that draws you in for close-up viewing. This will be Doveton's first show comprised entirely of these small works. Be sure to arrive early if you want to own a work from this series, because Doveton's shows tend to sell out quickly!

  2. THE LAWRENCE PERCOLATOR in the alley behind the Lawrence Arts Center, two doors down from The Social Service League (9th and New Hampshire)

She started making scrapbooks while her husband was serving in WWII, stopped and started again in 1980 when someone bought one of her books from the 40's. The scrapbooks cover a broad range of themes including iconoclastic images of advertizing and fashion from the decades as they evolve, what it has meant to be black in America, and zines about the history of slavery.

The Percolator is an autonomous art collective focused on the interactive creativity of the community in which it thrives. We're located in the alley between 9th & 10th & New Hampshire & Rhode Island streets, open Saturdays & Sundays noon-6pm & every final friday of the month. We hope to see you soon and often.
