Final Fridays began in August of 2010 through the cooperation of the Lawrence Arts Center, Downtown Lawrence Inc., The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission and a wealth of artists, gallerists, art collectives and local businesses, all of whom saw the value of the arts in our city and an opportunity to bring them to a wider public through this monthly free arts festival. Lawrence has one of the highest percentages of working artists in the country per capita, and has long stood out in the Kansas landscape as a mecca for creative thought and energy. On the last Friday of every month (all year long!) from 5 until 9 pm, the streets of Downtown Lawrence erupt, storefronts convert into flash spaces, and performances and exhibits spill in and out of galleries and businesses. Activities for kids, exhibitions designed to challenge adults, music, dance and theater for all ages are all within walking distance of each other.

Creative Observer William S. Burroughs The Lawrence Arts Center will present an exhibition of William Burroughs’ art and collections titled “Creative Observer” from January 17 thru March 2. The exhibition will include works from many periods of his life. This multimedia experience will provide insight into Burroughs’ prolific creative energy as well as revealing his ideas on observing art and people. Included in this exhibit will be collaborative works with such artists as Brion Gysin, Robert Rauschenberg, Kurt Cobain, Keith Haring, and George Condo, among others. February 5 marked the 100th birthday of Burroughs. There are a variety of programs that surround this exhibit. Check website for details. www.lawrenceartscenter.org

Tom Moore Solo Exhibition January 31 – March 30 Tom Moore's life has been filled with both the compulsion to create and obstacles that have forced him to devise alternative ways to fulfill that urge. He always wanted to become an artist (or, possibly a superhero, as his early inspiration was cartoons and comic books). Moore trained formally at the University of Kansas School of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills in painting and learned to silkscreen. In 1994, at the age of 50, Moore developed Parkinson's disease and other serious health issues, and by 2003 he was forced to give up painting. Tom is still compelled to create, and his casual sketches on the backs of envelopes and scrap paper have continued to flow. Ironically, episodes in the hospital and rehabilitation settings have offered him uninterrupted blocks of time to focus on making these sketches. This exhibition will include a large variety of drawings and sketches in the Lawrence Arts Center's Antecedent Gallery curated by Roger Shimomura.

Present Tense Works on Paper 2011-2013 Marty Olson

The autumn of 2011 presented a change in vision and process for me. The previous years, my focus had been to develop a painting style involving acrylic paint and various water-soluble media applied to canvas and wood panel surfaces. All this was combined with abstraction of familiar images and textures. At one point, I produced a series of image-based pieces from photographs of a historic site in New Mexico. Following that series with more "sense of place" pieces, I chose to retire the acrylic paint for the time being.

My sight was now set on returning to works on paper with watercolor, ink, collage and colored pencils. I thought it was a great time for me to revisit spiritual themes. I took a broader approach by investigating various belief systems and culling personal visual impressions. I touched bases with New Age, Pantheism/Paganism, Catholicism, Buddhism, Voodoo, Jewish Mysticism (Kabbalah),as well as Roman Mythology and abstracted perceptions of these beliefs. The central theme was the Mandala. There seems to be a sacred circle in any ritualistic theory.

I have since expanded my scope into my own search for a rewarding spiritual place in my artwork. Subsequently, I have added the images of roots and wings as a homage to my parents, both of whom encouraged and nurtured my artistic path.

Marty Olson was born in Albuquerque, NM, and lived his earliest years in Wichita, KS. His family moved to Lawrence, KS in 1957, where Marty has resided ever since, apart from two years at Northwest Missouri University, where he majored in Fine Arts.

Since his years in college, Marty has pursued his passion for visual art through painting, drawing, and printmaking. He definitely had his thirst for learning tweaked by his art professors at NWMSU.

Marty has had solo exhibits more recently in venues around Kansas, such as Lincoln Arts Center; Stone House Gallery in Fredonia; Kansas Wesleyan University Gallery in Salina; Salina Country Club Gallery; Carnegie arts Center in Ottawa; 1109 Gallery in Lawrence; and the Lumberyard Arts Center in Baldwin City. The Fall of 2013 saw an exhibit at the Lawrence Arts Center.

Previous exhibits have been in Washington, DC; Pasadena, CA; Taos, NM; Kansas City, MO; and two exhibits at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Tulsa, OK.

Statement:

Through finding inspiration and meaning between the realms of the abstract to the impressionist understandings of context and color, Angela creates pieces to display and provoke a kind of interpretation, while also attempting to describe the intrinsic beauty of the world.

The works presented in the show, En Plein Air Drawings - Vans and Trucks of the Later 19th Century, demonstrate various trucks and vans seen around Lawrence, Kansas. These drawings were created in ink pen and drawn on site of the vehicles, as to gain a feeling of the automobile amidst the environment.

Join us at Phoenix Gallery on Friday, February 28th for the Final Friday Art Walk. This month we will be featuring artists Jane Flanders and Katie Meuser. We will have music by Darrell Lea, and food will be furnished by TCBY of Lawrence. There will also be hors d’oeuvres in Phoenix Underground/Essential Goods.

Jane Flanders’ functional ceramics are porcelain midfire from an electric kiln, and are fired to 2,165 degrees. Midfire ceramics are often colorful. Jane enjoys mixing glazes and exploring color variations, and she has learned chemistry as well as ceramics. Jane produces ware by throwing on a wheel, then often alters the thrown ware. She then pursues form and design so that the ceramics provide a blend of technology and artistic expression. Along with her ceramics, Jane will also be showing several of her paintings. These pieces are just as unique as her ceramics and show the wide range of this artist’s talent. Jane received a B.F.A. in design from the University of Kansas, and works in her studio/home in East Lawrence.

Katie Meuser will be in the Vermont St. entrance. Katie completed a B.A. at the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2009. She works predominantly with watercolor, acrylic, and ink to make large scale non-objective abstracts on canvas, as well as smaller scale watercolor flowers using a free flowing technique she developed while attending the University. Katie is the creator of KT Cards and Co-creator of ME CAAARDS. They are lighthearted greeting cards that show Katie’s “punny” insight. They are sold in select stores in Nebraska and Kansas, including Essential Goods, here in Lawrence.

Be sure to come out and see Darrell Lea, a well-known singer, guitarist, and song-writer from Lawrence, KS.

Phoenix Underground and Phoenix Gallery are proud to present our very first KU Visual Arts Juried Student Exhibition. “Sublime” is the theme of the show, and students were invited to create a work of art based upon their own interpretation of the word. Sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, and ceramics were all acceptable mediums for the competition. The jurors are local artists Kate Dinneen, Roger Shimomura, and Tim Forcade. Artist Statement I try to capture instantaneous expressions of energy and emotion through the use of vivid color and vaguely abstract forms. Inspirations are many and varied and range from music, literature and poetry, scents, and sights, to the unique quality or feel of relationships and experiences encountered on my journey through Life. Each image has its basis in my own personal experiences, but I have delighted in learning what others see and experience when viewing them. Art, whatever it is, seems to me to involve a strange dance of reflection and interaction between the artist, the creation, and the viewer.

Artist Biography A Kansas native, Rebecca Ryan has lived in Lawrence since 1970. Her formal education includes a B.A. in French Language and Literature, and an M.S. in Computer Science. She has been painting for 20 years, guided and encouraged by several friends with formal training and degrees in Fine Art. Rebecca recently retired from a 30-year career in technology. She is enjoying the opportunity to take formal art classes where she is exploring new perspectives and opportunities. She is currently working with Digital Imaging through classes at Johnson County Community College. This is her first showing.

Little Itchings Andrew Burkitt Andrew Burkitt was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1977 and grew up in the surrounding suburbs. The rolling landscape of Kansas made a deep impression on Burkitt and continues to inspire his artwork. In 2012 he received his MFA in printmaking from the Lamar Dodd School of Art at The University of Georgia. His current studio practice includes the ongoing development of his drawing skill and the ever-challenging practice of printmaking. He currently resides in the beautiful city of Lawrence, Ks.

Laurie Culling is a visual artist and active visual artists’ advocate, living in Lawrence. Ranging in style from realistic to abstract, her art explorations feature a variety of mediums including acrylic on canvas, mixed media on gypsum, monotypes, watercolor, pastels, hand-made paper collage, fabric and beads. Her artwork has been exhibited locally, regionally and nationally and she has received numerous awards including Lawrence’s prestigious Phoenix Award in Visual Arts (2002). Her works are in many private, public and corporate collections. Laurie is a former Lawrence Art Guild co-president and vice-president, the co-founder of the Phoenix Gallery (1982), a founding member of the F.A.N. Club (1987) and Artist for the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center (1988). Laurie volunteered as art exhibit coordinator on behalf of the Lawrence Art Guild for the Lawrence Public Library for 20 years. Dian Hauser is a mixed media artist living in Oskaloosa, Kansas with her husband and 14 turkeys (among other animals). She received her MFA from the University of Kansas in 2000 and has been happily making art ever since. Her artwork references stories, verbal and written, that have a metaphysical basis. Dian uses metal and wood as a ground for her collage/ drawing/ painting explorations. She has exhibited her work locally and regionally. Dian’s art hangs in corporate and private collections. LETA STROM BACKDOOR PHOTOS During her travels with her husband Steve, Leta Strom utilized traditional and modern photographic techniques to create canvas pieces that capture the charm and distinctiveness of various locales in Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Her photo company, “Backdoor Photo,” takes its name from the approach that Steve and Leta chose in planning their European adventure. Rather than visiting a great many large cities, they chose to enter the countries through the ‘backdoor,’ wandering along winding cobblestone streets, becoming lost in the centuries-old charm of the villages and falling in step with the daily lives of locals. It is Leta’s hope that as you view her photos, you may become lost in the enchanting appeal of these European spots. Leta Strom has been involved in the Arts and working with young people for over twenty-five years. She taught high school drama and students with special needs. Leta resides in Lawrence, Kansas with her husband, Steve, and enjoys spending time with her daughters, Lauren and Kristin.

Eliza Bullock Statement and Bio: Bio I received a BFA from Ohio University in Graphic Design in 1995. After graduating I moved to San Francisco and worked as a designer in the publishing industry. It was the dawn of streamlined, computer-generated design and production. I was, however, missing my connection with fine art and with creating things that had a more tactile, textural quality. I began making monotypes in 2000 through a series of classes and workshops in San Francisco. In 2002 I moved to Florence, Italy where I participated in an intensive monotype workshop where I further developed my skills and passion for printmaking. After returning to the United States, I further pursued that passion while continuing to work as a designer. It wasn’t until moving to Lawrence, KS in 2009, where I became aware of the Lawrence Arts Center and its John Talleur Print Studio, that I was finally able to turn my art making into a more primary focus. Now I work in printmaking, mixed media and photography. I find that each discipline enhances the other. I live and work at my home in Lawrence, KS.

Artist Statement I am an artist based in Lawrence, KS. Born and raised in New York City, I grew up surrounded by the noisy texture and richly layered dichotomy of the city and its inhabitants. There is an alluring tension of extremes there which has become an essential part of the work I make. I create abstract works on paper utilizing techniques of monotype, chine collé, collage, assemblage, drawing, painting, pastels and stitching. Monotype, unlike other printmaking methods, is a process through which only one unique print can be made. Each print is one-of-a-kind. I begin by creating monotype prints and layer into them with additional techniques and materials to complete each piece. My process is very fluid. I never know what I am going to create until I begin. It is then that my conversation with the piece begins. It is a dynamic, evolving exchange between myself and the work until it reaches resolution. I believe each piece should offer the viewer an ever-changing experience that presents something new with each view. It is my hope that my work speaks to the viewer on a very personal level and that it connects with their deepest emotions, as it does for me.

Molly Murphy Statement and Bio:

“My work embraces the inextricable links between art and science, and investigates memory as it relates to the lines between the two. Something of an autodidact, my studies – or life for that matter – has never taken on a conventional order. My work tends to incorporate the studies of neuroscientists and researchers in the fields of computational cognitive psychology, neural processing and memory, along with sometimes nearly parallel pursuits by Buddhists, transcendental meditation and intuitive healers. I find myself unable to separate the knowable from the unknowable in my work, and accept that the mere act of creating a piece is an act of memory. I have completed series around these themes, all with a focus on memory – be it physical, neurological, collective, intuitive, projected – for Baker University, BNIM Architects, as Visual Artist in Residence in Seaside, Florida and numerous group and solo shows. At this moment, I see all of this as a scratch on the surface of a subject that has such fluidity that I may follow it for the rest of my life with every moment offering new intrigue.”

Molly Murphy serves on the Board of Directors of the Lawrence Arts Center, serves as Coordinator for Final Fridays, Art Coordinator for The Bourgeois Pig and Pachamamas Restaurant and Star Bar. She previously served on the Board of the Percolator Lawrence, created and designed the Project-based Residency program at the Lawrence Arts Center, and was a co-founder of dotdotdot artspace and member of Fresh Produce Art Collective and SeedCo Studios resident artist. She works out of an old warehouse studio in the Crossroads Kansas City, Missouri where she can often be found pacing around the city sidewalks with a cup of YJ’s coffee.

Located within the Warehouse Arts District at 826 Pennsylvania in a monolithic brick warehouse, this space is ideal for making, showing and engaging in all aspects of contemporary fine art. With studios on the lower level and event space in the main hall, the potential for creating and collaborating on projects at all scales is practically limitless. SeedCo is envisioned as a creative factory/laboratory with each of the resident artists bringing their singular artistic identity and prowess to expand and delve deeper into conception and production. At the heart of this project is a conscious intent to transform post-industrial space into a fluent medium all its own, specifically designed to transcend temporal and spatial values and condense them to create a heightened sensory experience. A multi-disciplinary approach emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and community involvement and encompassing elements from fine art, sculpture, graphic design and production, fashion, construction, digital media, and street art, the scope of this endeavor is far-reaching, but the flavor is distinctly home-grown. Marla Jackson Quilter Textile Historian Opens Studio and Gallery in New Lawrence Arts District Get ready to take a journey into the creative mind of nationally renowned Lawrence artist Marla Jackson. Not your typical on-the-prairie quilter, Ms. Jackson brings her African American heritage and historical creative poignancy to her quilts. Her primary goal with her work is to echo the untold stories of heroes that history has overlooked, forgotten, or hidden. But it is not until you know the raw emotion of Ms. Jackson's personal story, that you see the joy and pain of her own life intertwined with her African American culture playing out in the brilliant color and texture in her “story” quilts.

Art pieces may remain at the store on exhibit for others to see. So come see the inspirations Wyatt speaks of while you sample the healthiest local milks from the Iwig Family Dairy. Bring the kids and treat them (and yourself) to an ice cream cone! The store will be open until 9:00pm and features all healthy local foods from local farmers.
