737 CONNECTICUT STREET 737 Connecticut Street invites Final Friday goers to visit Kristin Morland's home studio. This month's show features the work of Heather Smith Jones, Emily Markoulatos, Raelean Finch, and Kristin Morland. Offerings include fine art, letterpress cards, prints, jewelry and fine knitwear. We will open our doors at 5 pm. Kristin Morland is an artist whose primary work is in hand sewn sequins and beads. But, beyond the medium, Morland’s work centers on light and color to tell a story, to connect patterns of behavior, or reflect on nature, sound, and experience. In her work, Kristin reflects a fascination with time, people, places, and objects. Her aim is to show the beauty in everyday experiences, and seemingly ordinary moments. Making use of contrast and color, as well as form and texture, Morland condenses emotion and experience to interface her language.www.kristinmorland.com Morland’s work has been shown in local, and midwest galleries. Kristin regularly participates in juried competitions, benefit auctions, Final Fridays and Artwalk. Morland received her BFA from the University of Kansas, where she studied painting and weaving. Kristin and her husband Timothy decided to move back to Lawrence after they were married to raise their family. Morland’s home studio is open to the public by appointment, and Lawrence Final Friday events. Heather Smith Jones is an artist working in painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking. She is the author of Water Paper Paint, Exploring Creativity with Watercolor and Mixed Media, published in 2011. Her work is represented by galleries in the Midwest and on the East coast, is part of the Sprint Corporation and Emprise Financial Corporation public collections, and many private collections around the world. For the past eleven years she has been an instructor in the Arts-Based Preschool at The Lawrence Arts Center and has taught children of all ages, students on the college level, and adult workshops. She earned an MFA from The University of Kansas in 2001, and a BFA in Painting from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC in 1996. Smith Jones grew up in the mountains of Tennessee and on the South Carolina coast, and currently lives in Lawrence with her husband and their four cats. www.heathersmithjones.com Emily Markoulatos combines acrylic paints with a wood burning technique to create images inspired by the Kansas landscape and people. Her more abstract canvases layer colors and texture that evoke the viewers' imagination.

Raelean Finch of No-Law Knits hand knits a variety of wooly garments and accessories using luxurious fibers such as wool, alpaca, merino and organic cotton. She knits for babies, toddlers, kids and adults.

Statement :

Charlotte 'Larson' Pemberton primarily creates images using printmaking processes or various mixed media techniques. “....and then, I'll be the Moon..” features images of the majestic moon and associations with cycles.

Charlotte is a Kansas native and resides in Lawrence. She is an active member of the Lawrence arts community- co-founding the Thieves Guild Art Collective, a trio of illustrators who produce monthly life drawing events, as well as involvement with Wonder Fair. Charolette is currently earning a Visual Communications Illustration degree at the University of Kansas.

Instead of our white cube gallery this holiday season, at Wonder Fair you’ll find a glittering ice cavern filled with framed art prints (and other tiny treasures), hung salon-style around a centerpiece of cut paper stalactites. This year’s special “Prints on Ice” gallery installation is inspired by and designed in homage to the opening of the Downtown Lawrence ice rink, located adjacent to our friends at the Lawrence Public Library.

Installation begins November 25 and continues into early December, remaining on view through January 2015.

PHOENIX GALLERY (825 Massachusetts St.) www.phoenixgalleryks.com For the November Final Friday Art Walk we will feature the artists of Illuminated Glass, a collaboration of three wonderful local glass artists: Ben Kappen, Brad Chun, and Courtney Skeeba. Elizabeth Rowley will display her paintings in the Vermont St. entrance and throughout the gallery. Ben Kappen spent three years studying illustration at the University of Kansas before leaving to pursue a career in glass. In 2000 he began to learn how to furnace-work soft glass with Darren Davis at Rainbow Fired Glass in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Using what he had learned there with soft glass, he bought a small torch and began to 'lampwork' glass in early 2003. During this time Ben also began building his own equipment in order to open a soft glass studio in Lecompton, Kansas. Over a six month period he hand built an array of annealing ovens and reheating equipment, along with a 250 pound capacity hot-glass furnace. The furnace was first fired in June of 2004 and marked the grand opening of Illuminated Glass. Brad Chun attended the Kansas City Art Institute in 1992, and was first introduced to art glass while visiting Eugene, Oregon in 1993. There he met Bob Snodgrass, a key figure in the modern lampworking studio movement that developed throughout the early 90's. Brad moved to Eugene in 1996 to apprentice at the Snodgrass School of Glass. He developed his skills under Bob's watchful eye, exploring the new glass world. With only a few colors available at the time, experimentation and discovery was a daily occurrence. Brad moved back to Lawrence, Kansas in 1998 where he was introduced to furnace worked soft glass at Free State Glass. Courtney Skeeba studied glassblowing in 1992 at the Cleveland Institute of Art. There she developed her skills under Brent Lee Young before returning to Kansas. In 1996, Courtney attended the University of Kansas, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Metalsmithing and Design. During this time, she kept her glass skills sharp while working at Free State Glass in Lawrence, Kansas. From 1993-2002, Courtney worked under Dick Rector and Jim Slough, helping to create the fine glass art Free State was known for. Lawrence artist Elizabeth Rowley is drawn to capturing the essence of the landscape surrounding her with thick applications of oil paint with her palette knife. She is driven by her pure reverence for nature. Her new plein-air paintings pay homage to the Kansas landscape where she sits in the prairie and open-sky where she is inspired to paint.

Phoenix Underground welcomes Justin Marable and his exhibition “Skyward Shifts” for the November Final Friday Art Walk Justin was raised in Robinson, a northeastern Kansas farm town. Throughout his life, he has learned and wandered within the boundaries of his Midwestern homeland, observing the social and physical landscape of the surrounding region. He finds inspiration in geography and history of the Midwest. Social and environmental issues drive much of his work as well as influences from family, nature, and everyday life. Justin graduated from the University of Kansas in 2005 with a B.F.A. in printmaking and currently resides in Topeka with his wife and daughters. He works full time at his home as an artist, husband, and father. In Kansas he has settled, grown his roots, and created a life grounded in art, family, and community. From Justin: “The longer I learn and grow within the Midwest, the more I realize slight shifts across the landscape. Within my “Ingrained” body of work, I bring attention to a deeper and more ethereal view of Kansas landscape. I utilize various types of lumber that contain both rich and subtle wood grain. Various woods such as hickory, oak, spalted maple, spalted sycamore, and ash were used to create most of these pieces. The imagery originally comes from photographs of my wanderings across the Midwest. These scenes are common observations ingrained mentally within my memory and physically within the properties of wood. Through this work, I present a depth of beauty to be discovered by those seeking and seeing more of Kansas than meets the eye. My overall hope is to provide an ongoing stream of original art that flows from roots of urban and rural Kansas to the surrounding local and global community.”

Kelsey Michele Deviney was raised in the country outside of Winchester, Kansas. Kelsey was raised on five acres of land along with her three younger siblings. She is currently a senior at the University of Kansas completing her BFA in Visual Art and Minor in Art History. She creates artwork from multiple mediums, varying from 2-D and 3-D. Her favorites include life drawing, metal work, and photography. Because of her upbringing out on the farm, surrounded by pasture and timber; all of her work has a constant theme of her relationship with nature and her view on society. Kelsey will graduate this December 14, 2014 and plans to stay in Lawrence to find a job in the arts. Kelsey has added to her resume in the past year by interning with Van Go of Lawrence, KS. Van Go is a well-known grant funded art program that reaches out to at-risk children in the community. The program is focused around job training for high school students while providing social work assistance. In February 2014, Kelsey began a new job through Kansas Work Study at Essential Goods on Massachusetts Street in downtown Lawrence. She was very excited to have a position in the arts that allowed her to interact with artists but also customers who support buying local artwork. For her final semester at KU, Kelsey has been interning with the Lawrence Arts Centers Art-Based Preschool program. This program gives 3-4 year old children the chance to explore many different types of art from painting, theatre, and music. This internship has been excellent for Kelsey, as it applies directly to her future plans. In the next five years Kelsey plans to move to a farm outside of Wichita, KS and start organic farming with her boyfriend, Ryan. She also plans to run an art-based daycare from the farm teaching kids the importance of health, fitness, and creativity. Kelsey plans to continue her personal art on the side while sharing with others the joy that art can bring. Kelsey’s work will be up through December 2014.

Angela Lowe

Angela Lowe has had an “artist’s eye” from childhood capturing candid expressions of people and compositions of natural beauty. “Growing up in colorful Colorado, natural beauty was on full array throughout the seasons,” Angela states. Her curious creative perspective persisted and earned her a Bachelor of Arts degree. “My life’s calling has been manifested in various ministry settings, yet I have always been able to express myself in a creative way using my art education background. My passion for creativity is expressed in my gardening, home interior designs, crafts and photography. It is my therapy especially after a long day or night at LMH where I am the Coordinator of Spiritual Care / Staff Chaplain.” Her photography exhibit will feature some of her favorite prints, cards and bookmarks. “It has an international theme reflecting candid photos from recent pilgrimages to Myanmar and Bolivia. Expressions of warmth and love are conveyed in any language,” Angela passionately states. Her work is reasonably priced because she wants others to have the opportunity to enjoy some of her “favorite things” from across the street, throughout our nation and around the world. Angela is on the Board of Directors for Ten Thousand Villages, Lawrence and a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her work will be donated to Ten Thousand Villages, Lawrence. Angela will be sharing the exhibit space with a promising photographer, Marie Boncella, a tenth grader at Lawrence Free State High School.

Rachel Adelia Forrest Lost and Found The landscape is a surreal entity, and we only know as much as we sense. My paintings are about exploration and discovery. As I explore nature, I have close to no desire to paint what is easily found. While a beautiful Kansas sunset seen from my back porch is extremely provoking (and I will often photograph it with my cell phone), what inspires me are sights that are more difficult to find, or something that I did not purposefully look for. As an example, Perry Lake I is a composition that I found off the beaten path. After a drive out of Lawrence and through the dirt roads that surround Perry Lake, I happened upon a small lagoon. It was quite isolated, and I travelled on foot along the rocky beach. My intuition took me to this spot; it is often what I choose to follow. The movement of the water against the rocks, with a distant strip of land was very striking to me. In nature, I find themes of life and death, tranquility, harmony, and memory. Many difficulties arise in the physical journeying process, but suffering for my work has been rewarding to date. Rachel grew up in Edmond, Oklahoma and graduated in May 2014 from the University of Kansas with a BFA in painting, a BFA in Art History, and a minor in French. She also studied at the Marchutz School of Art in Aix-en-Provence, France. Rachel regularly exhibits her work locally and currently has work at the Buttonwood Art Space and the 2016 Main Gallery in Kansas City, Missouri. She has exhibited at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center, several spaces in Oklahoma City, and has a painting in the Heritage Museum at the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, Nebraska.

SEEDCO STUDIOS- Located within the Warehouse Arts District at 720 E 9th Street #2 in Lawrence, KS, this space is ideal for making, showing and engaging in all aspects of art. With 19 artist studios, a music recording operation and collaborative space/gallery, the potential for creating at all scales is practically limitless. SeedCo is envisioned as a creative factory/laboratory with each of the resident artists bringing their singular artistic identity and prowess to expand and delve deeper into conception and production. At the heart of this project is a conscious intent to transform post-industrial space into a fluent medium all its own, specifically designed to transcend temporal and spatial values and condense them to create a heightened sensory experience. A multi-disciplinary approach emphasizing cooperation, collaboration, and community involvement and encompassing elements from fine art, sculpture, graphic design and production, music and recording, fashion, construction, digital media, and street art, the scope of this endeavor is far-reaching, but the flavor is distinctly home-grown. With its placement in the center of historic redevelopment, SeedCo Studios has the chance to act as a catalyst for creative growth, not only in Lawrence proper, but radiating outward into the surrounding regional area and beyond.

THE BREWHAUS (624 N. 2nd Street)

Beth Ann Pine Beth has been creating original art since she could hold a crayon. Her previous paintings, done in acrylic on canvas, celebrate the female form. She focused heavily on editing her work, eliminating lines and shadows. She explores what could be removed from her work, while still allowing the painting to communicate to the viewer. The idea is that by editing ourselves, we allow the most important things to come to the foreground both in art and in life.

Her current work features watercolors that serve to express feminine energy. Her work has been driven by creating flowing lines and color but done in a specific amount of time. Deadline driven, her watercolors are an exploration of what one can accomplish in a small amount of time, day-by-day. Once the allotted time is up, the work is considered complete.
