California garage rockers The Fresh & Onlys hit the Jackpot tonight
Hailing from San Francisco's vital garage rock scene, psychedelic-pop outfit The Fresh & Onlys distinguished themselves from their peers with powerful songcraft in addition to the requisite level of fuzz. This was certainly on full display in their breakthrough 2010 album Play it Strange, a hooky little record that the caught many off guard for how unassuming, sincere and catchy it is. Their latest LP, Long Slow Dance finds the band more stately, with a jangly pop sound that cleaves closer to 80s bands like The Cure and Echo and The Bunnymen, while still retaining their country and psychedelic roots. The result might be a bit too swoony and diffuse, but the new songs show a cocksure level of refinement and confidence.
The Fresh & Onlys play at The Jackpot with Swayback tonight at 8 p.m..
