Fundraiser for the Social Service League features Monzie Leo, Drakkar Sauna and more
Update: Drakkar Sauna will not be playing the event because of illness.
Tomorrow's fourth annual Friends of the League Party, in support of the Social Service League, is pairing local bands with art, a photo booth, a silent auction, and a raffle. It's at Free State Glass from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and is 18 and over.
The Social Service League has provided assistance to financially challenged residents of Lawrence and Douglas County since 1863. Funds from the party will support the League’s general operating costs, said Janet Cinelli, treasurer of the League’s board.
You’ll probably recognize songstress Conroy and her charming voice from La Guerre and Cowboy Indian Bear. Alex Garrison wrote about Conroy in June.
Below is Monzie Leo with his larger band, the Big Sky. (He'll be playing with his band tomorrow, but I am told they are now a two-piece.) Their music ranges from the soft, swaying bluegrass type seen below, to some fast-paced dancing tunes. They call poetry a large theme of their music.
Drakkar Sauna are a staple of the Lawrence music scene and have been making music here for quite a while—about a decade. Their folk sound is just full of soul.
Pale Hearts seems to be popping up everywhere lately, and the Friends of the League Party is no exception. Here they are bringing their rock to KJHK’s studio:
The League's new online boutique will also be launching at the event. Items that are donated to the League's thrift store, but that don't necessarily support those in need (for instance, a sterling silver tea set), will be posted for sale on the boutique.
The party costs $5 to get in, and you'll receive a League pint glass and a drink—water, tea, soda, or beer (if you're over 21!).
