The divide
But like a thunderclap from across the room came a voice: "I don't want to hear any of this talk about West Lawrence. You know, we compost in West Lawrence."[- Lawrence Journal World, "Lawrence subdivisions run deep"][1] [1]: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2007/aug...

We also recycle.
You know what I hate? Having to preface my place of residence with "its just a townhouse" when I tell people I live on the "wrong side" of town, so that they don't get the wrong impression that I love Wal-mart, hate the "T", and blah, blah, blah, whatever else west-siders are known for. As a matter of fact, my husband and I hate it so much, we are currently saving up for a home close to downtown.
We currently consider ourselves east side commuters. I get up in the mornings make coffee and shuttle the kids 3 miles to their school on Mississippi Street, my husband often takes the bus to work. We recycle. We shop locally, etc, etc, again, blah, blah, blah. But maybe we should reconsider moving. Maybe we should stay here as a beacon of hope for the West side. Ambassadors for the east, a conscience in the west.
Or maybe we should all just cut the crap and get to know people, i.e. our neighbors, before we lump them all together according to their zip code.

"Someone was apparently trying to cancel his membership in a country club or some other such organization, and the person on the other end of the line was trying to find out why. I heard the caller say, "No, it's not the facilities, it's the membership." When further pressed, he finally said, "Well, I don't know how to put it. It's become too Johnson County." "
They're cancelling a country club membership (or whatever 'some such organization' means) because it's become too Johnson County? Seems to contradict my understanding of East Lawrence/JoCo stereotypes -- even though I live in Johnson County myself -- and I'm pretty sure no one within at least 2 miles of my house can afford any kind of country club membership.

That's East Lawrence VS. JoCo (or West Lawrence), rather.

There's definitely a difference between East Lawrence and West Lawrence, and I think it's mostly because of the housing styles- when everything looks the same, it's easier to think that the people who choose to live there are all the same too. There's an inherent "Oh I choose to live like this, therefore I have made a better choice." in whatever life you choose.
I'd love to live in a funky eastside bungalow with prayer flags and Christmas lights, but I also recognize the siren call of working AC and fewer sprickets and spiders coming out of the basement.

East Lawrence = Democrats (Commies, anarchists, and fancy coffee drinking pseudo-intellectual artsy fartsy green types)
West Lawrence - Republicans (Fundies, Homophobes,Soldiers, and poisoners of children through lawn chemicals, and OH, and developturds!!!)
Next question?

Glad you wrapped that up, Dotdot.
I love Lawrence, and I love living in East Lawrence, but there can be a "more authentic than thou" attitude amongst some of us. Everybody's got to make their own decision, as far as I'm concerned.

I am under 30, married to a Republican and have three young children attending private school.
85% of our food is produced within 100 miles of Lawrence. Our garden is completely organic. My wife drives a Hybrid and I bike to work. In our home we have one TV and no cable. We don't drink Starbucks and do our shopping at The Merc. We support local artist and volunteer for local charities.
Oh, and we live in West Lawrence.
All you obsessed with this East/West sh%t are mutha truckin' idiots. If you don't want your city to be divided, don't insist on dividing it.

Some parts of west Lawrence are actually really cool. It's just a bummer you have to drive everywhere.

Oh my! I don't get why - as a general rule - so many Lawrencians are snobbish against West Lawrence. It makes me laugh that it's so *hip* to live on the East side. I definitely love the East Side and just bought the home I've been renting the past year (in the Pickney neighborhood) - so, I guess I'm "hip." Then again, maybe I'm not all that "hip" because I'm not East of Mass. Old homes, newer homes - don't judge the person by which side of town they live in/how much money they make. I just get fed up with stereotypes...

Slowburn:
Doing all that stuff while living on the westside just makes you a poser.
yaaaaaahahahahaha!!!!!
The game is rigged by the house. Don't bother trying to beat it.

West side vs. east side, red states vs. blue states, pro-life vs. pro-choice, so on and so on....sometimes it seems that this world thrives on simple dichotomies.
DOTDOT (anonymous) says…
There's two kind of people in the world - those that believe the world thrives on simple dichotomies and those that don't.

This discussion reminds me of that Star Trek episode where one guy was black on the left and white on the right and the other guy was white on the left and black on the right and nobody could figure out what they were fighting about.

This discussion reminds me of the one where one guy with apparently nothing better to do waits around for someone else say something and then comes back with some smartass comment. Westside taupe duplex living in fool.
