Spreading the legend of Billy Q. Effinger
Our dear editor, Phil Cauthon, called me tonight, giggling and making me promise to go listen to a recent edition of "This American Life." He wouldn't tell me why.Now I know. A Lawrence folk hero has made an appearance.Billy Q. Effinger is like Jason from "Friday the 13th": You can think you've killed him and his insanely catchy ["Willie the Warlock"][1] from your mind ... only to have him spring to life, stronger than ever, in the sequel. He's not from around here, but he got popular in Lawrence - [and on lawrence.com, in particular][2] - three years ago. Billy Q. mania died down. Then, about two years ago, [the video happened.][3] And our love for warlocks grew.Apparently Billy Q's fame has grown, and now he's getting inside the heads of yuppies coast-to-coast.You can hear him about the 12-minute mark of the Oct. 5 edition of "[This American Life][4]" (How to Talk to Kids). Take a listen. And prepare yourselves - warlock mania is about to hit the big time. Unbelievable. A day after reading this on your blog and watching the video, I hear the song featured as bumper music on an episode of This American Life (Episode #341 "How to talk to kids")
Weird.
