Hope for 'Firefly' fans
I'm still in D.C. I sat next to Dana Priest at lunch today. Which was awesome. But no more stories. Instead: Sci-fi geekiness abounds.[To wit:][1]![][2]When Alan Tudyk told me on the phone this morning that a sequel to "Serenity" that's the name of the "Firefly" movie for those who've been up at Guantanamo Bay for the past couple of years could be happening I just about dropped the phone (I didn't though, because the last time I did that it landed in the loo. Fried itself. And as a consequence, I lost all my numbers.) Tudyk says the newly-released "Serenity : Special Edition" DVD has been selling so hot, that there's talk in doing another movie. "They had to put [the new DVD] out because they've been selling out of the other one [the DVD that isn't the 'Collectors Edition'] and so Universal's like 'So, let's do another one'", he says, adding "And now: there's now a chance there's going to be another movie".Ohpleaseohpleaseohpleaseohplease.... Pardon my ignorance, but can someone who is not at all familiar with the series fully enjoy the movie? I've been kicking around the idea of adding to the nflix list for awhile.
And without giving anything away, why do you guys think it's so good?

i think they should have a renegade "good" reaver who speaks in a british accent to replace wash-kebab. may not happen.

I've created a monster! Mwahahahahahahaha!!!!
Shelby--yeah, you can watch the movie without having seen the series--I know several people who did just that, enjoyed the hell out of it, and went on to become rabid "Firefly" fans.
As to why it's so good . . . where to begin. The actors are awesome. The writing is utterly superb, because Joss Whedon is the walking god of wit and corny humor. The stories are fun, the dialogue is a work of art in itself, the premise is interesting and very forgiving to a number of whacky shenanigans that should come off as ridiculous, but don't . . . I'm going to shut my fangirl mouth now, but it's good on so many different levels. Definitely check it out.
Oh, and it's got spaceships and whores.

Alas... poor Alan. Seeing as how he died in Serenity and all, how could Wash play any part in it, except through flashbacks. Unless of course, this was some sort of prequel.
Hmmm. Well, so long as Whedon is at the helm, and most of the original cast is still there, I'd stand in line opening night & pick a fight on Unification Day, I mean pick UP the DVD on release day.
Damn I'm a big ol' geek. :)

Shelby -- you can also netflix the series. Because of Fox's misguided decision to cancel it midseason, there are only 13 episodes, so it's not much of an investment of time. I think the movie kinda stands on its own, but it's definitely better if you've seen the series.
Personally, I'd rather see the series revived (Sci-Fi channel... I'm looking at you) than see another movie, but I'll take what I can get.
