All the vomitous, self-glorifying swill about a "moral nation" that has erupted from the self-described "Right"--these people are about as conservative as Lenin--is put paid by the total, complete lack of "conservative" outrage at the Bush Administration's hideous concentration camps and ongoing promotion of torture. And that goes double for the punk Democrats, who are so scared of the jackbooted thugs raping the country that they'll let this Administration do whatever it wants to whoever it wants. If you do not understand that the whole point of the United States of America is to demonstrate that free people don't build concentration camps, don't torture people, don't engage in programmatic, ongoing, officially sanctioned murder and rape, then you're just a pig Nazi with the good fortune to be born outside of Europe among your betters. If you aren't speechless with rage at this sick perversion of everything the United States of America stands for, get the hell out. Move to North Korea--a place that has long practiced the revolting form of government the extremist gang now styling itself the "Republican Party" is trying to implement here. (Not to be confused with the "Republican Party" of Abraham Lincoln and Barry Goldwater, which was committed to individual liberty, separation of church and state, minimal government interference in private lives and basic executive competence.)One expects nothing better from the gang of corrupt, draft-dodging thieves in the White House, but the failure of the American people--and I mean here the real American people, not the Jesus Jackoffs now attempting to destroy the Constitution--is utterly contemptible. The Jesus Jackoffs at least have an excuse: the victims of torture and murder are brown Muslims, and so are damned anyway under the tenets of Texas "Christianity." It's the rest of the country, the Blues, that ought to go home and put guns in their mouths. The GOP sheep truly don't know any better; hell, most of 'em approve of concentration camps. The sin of the Democrats is far, far worse: They _ do_ know better, but haven't the guts to do anything.Freedom on the march, my ass. I did not spend four years punching holes in the Atlantic Ocean just to let a bunch of draft-dodging, God-addled, oil company sockpuppets turn this country into a plastic version of Burma. Pull your head out of your ass and act like an American. Stop masturbating on the altar and save the Constitution. The President must withdraw the Gonzalez nomination. He must tear down these camps. And if he doesn't, he must be impeached. Christianity 101: Building concentration camps is worse than getting a blowjob. If you don't understand that, do the rest of us a favor: Kill yourself before you vote again.

I wonder, though: supporters of Bush loved -- just loved! -- the torture Mel Gibson inflicted on his vision of Jesus in the Passion.
I fear Bush's supporters get turned on as well by the thought of torturing Muslims.
It just feels good to them in a wholesome, Christ-like way.
(Readers: that's called "sarcasm.")
I doubt the thought of America herding fellow human beings into concentration camps bothers them at all.
They're Christians, after all, perfect and chosen by God.
They can do no wrong, even when executing fellow citizens and supporting the torturing of fellow human beings.

Yr missing my point, David. If all of that is true, then upon whom rests responsibility for fixing this mess and getting us out of the torture business?
These guys are completely out of control. Nominating Gonzalez as AG is a short step from nominating Josef Mengele. Mocking them isn't going to stop them. The responsibility rests with the real Americans, the ones who understand what "land of the free, home of the brave" really means, and that clearly isn't anyone in the GOP. For crying out loud, they just announced that Hastert is swearing-in Cheney, presumably w/ musical accompianment by Charles Manson. The Republicans are too far gone to be saved, they've forever lost their way, and you'll die young holding yr breath waiting for them to wake up and realize they've slipped into fascism.
The responsibility here lies w/ the Democrats. The GOP _must be stopped at all costs._ If they won't tear down their wretched camps, the President must be impeached. Clearly that isn't going to be a GOP initiative; Republicans on the Hill aren't allowed to shit or piss w/out a note from the President. It has to come from the constitutional side of the aisle.

The only way the Dems are gonna get Bush out of the White House (anf d keep his brother, Jeb, from assuming the mantle in '08) is to play just as dirty as the Repubs have been all along. Personally, I think both parties are about as useful as Bob Hope's asshole-- I mean, the most powerful Democrat in the country righ now spouts the same red state rhetoric that we hear coming from the GOP on a daily basis. No matter which way you look at it, this government is F-U-C-K-E-D.

Okay, now we're getting somewhere. I actually agree - or at least, sympathize - with a lot of what you're saying here.
The Bush Administration, at least from a spending standpoint, is anything but conservative. In fact, they are the biggest spending administration since FDR. And I hate that. It would be nice to see a return to the days of Goldwater's true fiscal conservatism, the trouble is, with the entitlement mindset that a big part of this country has, coupled with the "world cop" mindset that another big part of this country has, I'm not sure if that's possible.
On the detainment and torture issue - I assume you're talking about Guantanamo Bay here - I agree. Our Founding Fathers would be appalled at the notion. Then again, it's a different world than it was in the 18th century (i.e. as bright and forward-thinking as they were, I imagine our Founding Fathers didn't exactly envision a world with terrorist strikes involving jet airliners when they drew up the Bill of Rights). That's not to say that we should stand idly by while our fundamental constitutional rights are eroded. Far from it. But we should recognize that things change. Which is precisely why there is a well-codified amendment process in our constitution.
To be honest, I haven't followed the Gonzalez nomination, but if his past is truly as seedy as you make it out to be, he won't be approved anyway.

Rob--
The Dems are all we have. Look over this board, look over any of the boards here that even occasionally address politics--the Republicans are truly a lost cause; now the bright idea is to amend the Constitution to authorize concentration camps. These people would shock Mussolini, they haven't the slightest idea what America is all about, they think they''re smarter than the Founders, they say "things change." Forget the two-party system--it's one half-assed political party and a well-organized crime family, and the crime family has lined up every uneducated, Constitution-hatin' God-swotted boob on the continent. The half-assed political party is the only hope the country has.
I agree w/ you about Harry Reid, he's an ineffectual time-server, a Republican in both ethics and personal preference, he's a big part of the problem. But we have to do something about this; these authoritarian murdering bastards are tearing the country to shreds. The Dems are it, the only option, the last best hope for the City on the Hill. If we don't so something NOW these criminal lying torturing fiends will bankrupt the Treasury and make this cynical "war on terror" (read: "war on the Enlightenment") a permanent part of the culture, and (as their whipsock supporters never fail to remind us) they think THAT'S GOOD!
We have to draw a line in the sand. The line is "concentration camps." There are 100 million ignorant fascist assholes out there bleating "things change." No, they don't, and even if they did, we aren't going to change because a bunch of corrupt religious lunatics are scared of the bogeyman. We have to make him tear down his camps, or we have to impeach him, and that means working w/ the Dems, because the GOP is a soulless hateful corrupt bunch of fascists, and that's just how it is.
Tear down the camps, or impeach. That's it. That's where we have to start.

The best piece of writing I've seen since the election. I wholeheartedly agree...but I fear you will also die young expecting the Dems to be much different than the GOP. Wellstone is dead. Are there any gutsy liberal thinkers out there? The Dems are too busy whining about losing in '00 and '04, and blaming Nader voters for all the ills we're currently facing. Who do you expect to lead this impeachment?

It has to start w/ Kerry.
I don't think it's wise to cast this in liberal/conservative terms. Those terms are meaningless now. REAL conservatives shudder at the ongoing rape of the Constitution, the concentration camps, the torture, the rape, the junior-high economic policies, the revolting spying and officially promulgated lies. This is about deciding what kind of Americans we are: those who build concentration camps, or those who tear 'em down. Don't permit yourself to believe there's anything "conservative" about these lying fascist thieves. If Goldwater was alive, HE'D lead the impeachment.
It has to start w/ Kerry. We must start a letter-writing campaign demanding that the Senator rise up on the floor and DEMAND the immediate closure of all American concentration camps. That will require working w/ the Dems; a Republican would chew off his own arm before writing such a letter. If Kerry won't respond, we'll write someone else.
The word for the day is DEMAND. Raise hell. The answer is to start raising hell and not stop. Fuck these draft-dodging thugs. We're smarter than they are. We're better Americans than they are. We love our country more than they do.
It's time for the real America to rock.
