Syd Barrett
[Syd Barrett][1] died Friday. The cause of death is described as "diabetes-related." He was 60, a fact that astonishes me. I allowed for the passage of years w/ the rest of the band, but in my mind Syd never aged. Shine on you crazy diamond. [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syd_Barrett

I guess our crazy diamond will now be shining on in the afterlife. "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" was definitely my favorite Pink Floyd album, despite the fact that in my family if someone gets married its highly likely that the an airbrushed frosting version of the cover of "Dark Side of the Moon" will be gracing the top of the wedding cake.
Syd Barrett's solo stuff kind of reminds me of the few recordings I've heard by Charlie Manson...

Best Syd video ever. 'Astronomy Domine' live on Look of the Week + hilarious interview.

Syd Barrett was a true artist in every sense of the word. Was he a tragic figure? Sure. Is he an example of what happens when one takes too many drugs. Sure.
But he was and will always remain so much more. I can barely stand to listen to his solo works because I see this image of him sitting in a cold studio fighting demons both real and imagined...but listen I do. For every flub, for every stutter, for every missed chord, there are elements of pure genius.
Syd was a painter of words and images...and I'm sure I'm not the only one who dreamed that someday and somehow he would allow us all to see his artistic side again, or at least allow the world the opportunity to tell him how truely appreciative we were of his talent.

The death of Syd struck a chord with me and my mid-month podcast at The Best Radio You Have Never Heard (http://www.bestradiopodcast.com) is a tribute to the great rock visionary.
"Here To Do My Parts" is a tribute to Syd Barrett. Even though of course there is some Pink Floyd music in the show, it is more of a tribute to Syd's vision. I like to think of it as traveling music for Syd's iPod as he makes the trek to the Gates of Dawn, or perhaps some gardening music for the great beyond as, in his recent past, gardening was one of Syd's few hobbies.
Have a listen and let me know what you think.
