Andy Dierks and KJHK

Andrew Dierks is one of my favorite people in Lawrence, and one of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Those of you who know Andy understand exactly what I am talking about. If you know Andy then you know something else, he is passionate about his job as the KJHK General Manager. When he talks about KJHK -and the students who work so hard to make it one of the best radio stations around- you can see a person who loves his job. I was excited to see that the Kansas Association for Broadcasters agrees with what the people of Lawrence already know:KJHK is a damn good station. The students and Andy deserve a lot of credit.I think [this press release][1] says it all:KJHK student radio station wins 12 awards from Kansas Association of BroadcastersLAWRENCE - KJHK 90.7 FM, the University of Kansas student-operated radio station, received 12 awards, including four first-place honors, from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Awards will be presented at the KAB Student Seminar April 12 in Topeka.KAB annually sponsors a student radio and television competition for high school and college students enrolled during the current academic year or the spring semester of the previous year. Entries are judged on technical and creative merits. In addition to the first-place honors, KU students received five second-place and three honorable mention awards. KJHK received awards in eight of the nine categories in which an entry was submitted. This year, 38 percent of the KJHK entries received an award, up from 31 percent in 2005 and 19 percent in 2004."I'm excited for everyone at KJHK who received these awards," said Courtney Ryan, Lenexa senior and KJHK station manager. "It is especially exciting to see awards across all of the categories: news, production, sports and our Web site."Through progressive and diverse programming, KJHK aims to provide something for each KU student during the weekly programming schedule. It is operated as a student organization of the KU Memorial Unions. Andy Dierks is KJHK general manager. For more information on the station and its programming, go to the award-winning [kjhk.org][2]. That station really was a wonderful training ground even when I was there (well before Mr. Dierks) - in fact I went on to work for KANU after that and a few other stations - I am still doing volunteer radio today. Glad to see things are holding true!

Dierks is a good guy. When i was in school i applied to be a dj and due to a variety of issues was late submitting my application. Andy stuck around in his office for a while that day so I could turn it in late. I ended up getting a gig as a substitute (which still got me on-the-air a lot). And on one of my first days he called in half-way through my set to tell me i was doing a good job. Very nice guy. And congrats to the kj'ers.

Have to chime in with props to Andy and the KJHK staff. I'm very biased because the station has been a great friend to the Spencer Museum of Art, and we are honored to be an underwriter for their programming. Plus the DJs rock some great music you won't hear anyplace else on the dial (except, perhaps, special times on KKFI or KCUR), and the "State of the Arts" talk show on Wednesday evenings provides an hour of chat about visual arts in Lawrence. Anyway, nice of you to recognize Andy and the students who make KJ one of the great college radio stations anywhere. Keep it locked on 90.7....

I blame KJHK for keeping me in school and on the "right" track to graduate (I'll be done in May). I've worked there for eight semesters and I love KJHK so much that I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way for me to still stay involved there once I'm done with school (enrolling in at least one hour!). yay kjhk!

Yeah, props to Andy as well. I've only met him a few times over the past few years because of campus events, but every single time the guy seems to be having a great time doing what he's doing. I've never heard him speak ill will of a KJHK staff member, KU, Lawrence, or anything else for that matter. He's always positive and focusing on the successes of KJ rather than the small hiccups every now and then. Great guy. I'm really happy he got hired for the position a few years ago. It'll be sad when he eventually goes on to bigger and better things.
