The Return of Joe's?

I opened up this morning and what do my eyes behold? Wonderful and joyous new! Joe's Bakery has been sold and the new owners proclaiming that they are going to return it to its glory days. In this blog I have expressed my love of what Joe's was, I just hope the new owners can return it to all of its doughnuty deliciousness. If you missed the story today you card read all about it [here][1].P.S. I am not sure why, but the old owner took great pains to berate the egg salad sandwich. I hate eggs, and as such have never had one of Joe's egg salad sandwiches. Thus, I can't speak from personal experience. I do know that many current and former Lawrencians love Joe's egg salad sandwich. A friend of mine was once told, as he was buying an egg salad sandwich, how terrible they were and that he should try another sandwich. I heard the old owner give the same anti-egg salad speech several times. I think it is very odd that an owner would publicly speak out against one of the store's signature items. I hope the new owners have a little more business savvy. Staying open late:a great first sign. [1]: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/aug/08/joes_back/?city_local

When I was a student at LHS, my friends and I drove over to Joe's for a cheap lunch every day. I almost always got the egg salad, with an occasional break for the turkey. It really is my benchmark for what I want in an egg salad sandwich - not sure why a guy would serve a sandwich he didn't think was good.... but for my sake I'm glad he did.

Do you think it was a gimmick? When we lived in Davenport, IA one of the bars had neons signs that said "Warm Beer" and "Lousy Food".

I don't know - it's a strange gimmick! I do admit that the things I found appealing about it (the mushyness of both bread and filling) might not appeal to others.

Joe's bakery -- I met my husband while he was working at Joe's while he was in college. I have to brag that Joe himself gave us the most beautiful wedding cake you can imagine. It was not only pretty but delicious! I am glad to hear that the new owners are returning to the old recipe to make the doughnuts the old greasy way. The egg salad is a signature sandwich.
