Extra Green For Your Week

A few extra items you may have missed this week to hold you over until next...The Real Sidewalk SaleNow that the [sidewalk sale][1] is behind us, many of us may be gearing up for the real best deals in the city: [July 31 and August 1][2] are next week, affectionately known as "move-out/move-in" days around town. Whether or not you enjoy a bit of dumpster diving to save a buck, the City does collect end up taking away several tons of trash each year. [Students at the University of Iowa][3] are trying a different approach. By putting together an annual garage sale of sorts for moving students, they were able to divert more than 20 tons of trash from the landfill and donated more than $4,000 to local non-profits from the sale of used items. When will KU students try a similar project?Governor Sebelius on GristGovernor Sebelius [gave an interview][4] to the environmental news site Grist and discussed the coal plant controversy as well as the possibility of wind power in Kansas.Earth Ship[Sustainable houses built from recycled materials][5] on land with own water, power and food. What could be better, right? Well, they may not be the prettiest houses ever, and you may have to move to fairly remote areas to get around some zoning and building code restrictions, but the idea behind the house could serve as a model for future communities.Climate Change in KansasThe National Conference of State Legislatures just [released a report][6] detailing the potential costs of climate change for a dozen states, including Kansas. The report indicates the most pressing challenges for the Sunflower state will be rising temperatures and reductions in water resources. The full report can be downloaded at the link above.River GymEver wondered why treadmills aren't hooked up to a generator to power the lights in your house or at the gym? I always thought it would be an easy way to save a few bucks on the electric bill. Well, now you can work out at the [River Gym,][7] at least when you are in New York City. The gyms are built on small barges powered by treadmill and elliptical users and float in between ports on the Hudson and East rivers.Green Republican ConventionAlso, to add to [my earlier post][8] about green efforts at the Democratic National Convention, the Republican National Committee has announced its efforts to make the Republican convention the "greenest yet," including using flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles, electronic communication, recycling and improving energy efficiency at convention sites and in planning offices. The full plan can be [downloaded here.][9]MowercycleI just think [this is hilarious,][10]but it is getting expensive to gas up the mower. One FewerThis is also hilarious, but the idea may have a bit more merit. [This guy][11] doesn't need his SUV anymore and instead of selling it to someone so they can continue polluting with it, he is seeking ideas to permanently take it off the road.2,000 Watt SocietyA community in Denmark has set a goal for each citizen to use only [2,000 watts of energy each day.][12] The community produces all of its own energy from renewable sources with enough leftover to export to the rest of the country.Al GoreFinally, if you missed Al Gore's charge to produce 100% of our energy from clean sources in ten years, here are the highlights. The full speech [can be seen here.][13] [1]: http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2008/jul... [2]: http://www.lawrence.com/news/2005/jul...
