The Heard - Spirit Is the Spirit
Music should be fun. If it's not, don't do it. The best way to make music fun is to play it with your favorite people in the world. That is exactly what Spirit is the Spirit does. All of these dudes love music nearly as much, if not more than they love each other. I know this all sounds cheesy and lame, but it is beyond true. Being in a band with five other dudes is like having five girlfriends, without the perks. A lot of musicians spend more time with their band mates than with their families. We all know how simultaneously incredible and terrible family vacation can be... try touring.
The time I spent with Spirit is the Spirit was like hanging out in a Judd Apatow film. Maybe that is because we spent more time quoting movies than actually talking about relevant stuff. Alright, so it wasn't that bad. We actually had a very relevant discussion on how the Lawrence and Kansas City scenes compare. Speak of Diablo, Sprit is the Spirit was just on 96.5's Homegrown Buzz with Jeriney. They discussed the lack of closeness between the two scenes. In order for the scenes to flourish and grow into each other, it must start at the roots. Both Kansas City and Lawrence need more bands like Spirit is the Spirit. The dedication to promoting music for the love of music is what will one day separate bands who play for more than to say they are in a band. In order for integration into a scene, band members need to develop an extremely powerful bond with one another. The level of closeness that Spirit is the Spirit has ascended to is unreal. Hopefully, that will transpose its way into other bands.
A quick guide to getting noticed as a new local band:
Step one: Have a purpose.
Step two: Serve your purpose.
Step three: Swoon a killer promotion company like oh!mr.
The dudes in Spirit is the Spirit are working their tails off. They are working so hard that (in my opinion) one of the hardest working musicians in Lawrence, Marty Hillard of Cowboy Indian Bear and Ebony Tusks fame has taken notice. Marty's promotion company, oh!mr. has taken Spirit is the Spirit under its powerful and ever growing wing. Kids in Lawrence trust Marty. Musicians in Lawrence trust Marty. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in Lawrence trusts Marty. The oh!mr. stamp of approval is a great blessing for a young band. If anyone deserves it, these kids do. Everything they do in life is centered around being able to make music together. It comes across in their music. Watching them play together is almost like watching the cogs in an intricate machine seamlessly fit into one another. Whether it is the gorgeous harmonies, the extremely complimentary percussive elements or the attitude on and off stage, Spirit is the Spirit is doing exactly what they need to do: Make beautiful music because they love it, you might too.
Spirit is the Spirit is releasing their debut EP on February 26th at the Bottleneck. They will be playing with another hard working Lawrence band, Colony Collapse, who is also putting out a new 7" that evening. I hope to see you all there.
